All too often, for a variety of reasons, you can tell that a game was created first and the story written around what was already in place. That doesn't seem to be the case with D3 Entertainment's Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard. Rather than just shove the game out there, D3 has created a whole backstory for the main character, including an amusingly over the top blog (http://therealmatthazard.wordpress.com/).
Who is Matt Hazard and why the hell should you care that he's returning? Well he's a fading 80s action hero - think Steven Seagal - given an opportunity to revive his career in a video game pitting him against his old cinematic opponents. But of course it turns out someone is really trying to kill Matt, so he has to fight for his life.
The game, by developer Vicious Cycle Software, looks to skewer both video game tropes and those too-awesome-to-do-anymore 80s action flicks. Matt has to face a horde of very familiar video game foes, all while having to deal with the mysterious mastermind who can 'hack' the environment to produce some truly prodigious effects.
Humor is one of the toughest things to do well in a game, but if successful the results can be amazing. Let's hope the final product lives up to the premise with this game.
Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard is set for a Q1 2009 release on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.
