In the last couple months I have been following comics a lot more than I ever have been before. Since I love Batman, there were some must-have-comics that I purchased two days after christmas (a little gift for myself).
Today they arrived.

Unfortunately Batman: Year One is a little damaged.

I have already read The Killing Joke.
God I love Alan Moore.

I got Year One for X-mas as well. Great read, especially the Gordon parts.

Yeah I saw it before I made the topic, but since it wasn't really a recommendation I didn't want to derail the thread.
If a mod decided to merge the topics I would understand though.

No worries I just thought it was funny we have similar tastes. Just read The Killing Joke the other day, fantastic.

Well it is Alan Moore and Batman.
It is like winning a car, and finding out it is made of gold!

The new released of the Killing Joke colored by Bolland is amazing. Bought it when it was released.

That was a good story, if maybe a little predictable.
Though I don't that it is the same joker. There are some similarities, certainly, but they are still quite different.

All of those books you have are great. They're good Batman stories.
NOW GO READ HUSH. I shudder with awesomeness whenever I think about it.
Although in my opinion, Batman: Year One is one of the best graphic novels ever.

Amazon keeps recommending Hush (even before I bought Batman comics) so I have been curious about it.
Most people seem to have positive feelings about it but some one (don't remember who or where) said it was bad.
I will probably check it out either way.

Do not read Hush Returns. Hush Returns was terrible. That must be what your friend was talking about...anything else does not compute.

Here's a comparison for you:
The Killing Joke is like Memento. An introverted thriller.
Hush is like The Bourne Identity. An awesome thriller.
Also, after reading the deluxe edition of TKJ, I now know why many people, including Moore himslef, dislike it. That's a lot they put Babs through, and then they made it cannon. What kinds of assholes are they?!?

I find your decision to use "introverted" and then "awesome" to modify "thriller" confusing when it seems you are trying to compare two things with different comparisons.

I think that's a little harsh, Krispy...I always enjoy pieces that involve a villain who can get inside Batman's head, present a challenge that he can only barely overcome. It's an excuse to see how brilliant Batman is, which is the strength of the character.
I love the fight with Superman especially...mmm.
(Also, for some great Batman writing check out Green Arrow: Quiver. Kevin Smith knows what he's doing.)

I actually thought Hush was pretty mediocre. It felt like an excuse to put as many villains in one comic as they could with some loose connection for the sole purpose of having Batman jump around locations fighting everyone. To make matters worst, it finishes with pretty much nothing different from when it started. Everything done is undone except for shit they set up for spin offs. I returned both volumes to Barnes and Nobles when I was done with them, I suggest you "try" it out as well. It sure isn't up to Alan Moore quality, more like the X-Men 3 of graphic novels. How many cameos can we fit into one comic? Let's find out!
Ugh, don't mention that movies. Besides the Fantastic Four movies, it is probably one of the worst (and dumbest) comic book movie in recent years.
Now I don't really feel like checking it out. At least, not right now.
Superman's Dead

Yeah, maybe it was a little harsh to compare it to X-Men 3 but I was pretty disappointed. I enjoy testing the limits of a hero as much as anyone but they literally invented a plot line whose purpose was to find a reason to get all of his villains into one story. That just doesn't jive with me.
Maybe if I re-read it I'll see where you're coming from...but the best way to stop the World's Greatest Detective is with distractions, and Hush lined up a whooooooooooole lot of distractions.

The best comic book purchase I ever made: DC Universe: The Stories of Alan Moore (http://www.amazon.com/DC-Universe-Stories-Alan-Moore/dp/1401209270/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231717266&sr=8-3)
I tend to buy mostly anything Vertigo has. Almost always a guaranteed hit with Warren Ellis, Garth Ennis, Moore of course, and Grant Morrison, but I kind of have a thing against Frank Miller. Yeah, DKR was wonderful, and I love Sin City more than most, but he has made so many awful comics, truly god-awful. and he's really become (or just is) a self-absorbed guy that's like a parody of one of his own satirical macho characters. Not that Alan Moore is normal (doesn't he worship a snake God?) but I completely agree with Moore's statement that 300 was "racist, homophobic, and sublimely stupid."

I totally disagree. Kevin Smith is an ok comic writer. He writes for one person, Kevin Smith. If you aren't a big Kevin Smith fan to being with, you'll find yourself reading an OK book, when you can spend the same amount of time reading something much better.
Or, you can read his Daredevil run and wish you had just burned the book for warmth. Meandering story, which an issue of villain monologue to explain how it all made sense (because it obviously did not).
Then again, if you're a Smith fan, you can't go wrong with his other comic work.

This. Want to know where "Darkest Night" and the "Sinestro Corps War" came from? It's right here.

I liked his run on Daredevil, strange though it was. But I thought Quiver was definitely a labor of love, being able to bring back one of his favorite characters. Batman's background presence and precision in that comic is one of my favorite parts.

OK. TKJ is like a indie mind-fuck movie. Hush is like a blockbuster. Yes it was an excuse to make Jim Lee draw as many Bat-villains he could draw. And it has a very lame reveal at the end. But it does not take anything from the main work.
Of course, a better Hush story is the recent Heart of Hush, written by Paul Dini in Detective Comics.

Hells ya. And it's continuing! While Batman is out, not only are some other writers taking over, but Dini is writing more Hush. I wish that he could write out of continuity stories all the time. Love me some Dini.

Nailed it. Blockbuster all the way. The spoiler is damn near fucking you in the face from page one but it's about the ride in this case for the most part. Maybe it's the Jim Lee art talking. <shrug>
