The specs for DoWII have gone up over on the relic site (http://community.dawnofwar2.com/blogs/?p=451) and they honestly don't seem that bad. All I can say is that I was expecting higher recommended spec and that my good old laptop should be able to get some good eye candy out of the game. Which makes me very very happy.

I was involved in the DoW beta and playing that game for the first time is one of my best ever gaming moments. I remember a friend being around and the look on his face when i showed him the game. He was giggling like a school child when I let him have a go. So I'm going to have to find my way in to this one!

I would love to be in the beta for this. I was a huge fan of the original DoW, which is surprising because I typically don't go for RTS games. I was, however, absolutely terrible at it.

Check
Check
Check

...and check!

I'll be ready for this. Bought Dawn of War 1 a few weeks back and I'm working through it, enjoying it immensely. I really like a closer view and fewer units to control...reminds me a little of the joy I got playing the Myth games.

I loved DoW as a game but as a player i sucked. It's a game built for the very aggressive player. Sitting back would almost always make you lose and as ever online people where for the most part too good for me to bother. Had a lot of fun with skirmishs and playing with freinds who where on the same skill level or at lest where playing to have fun with it.

How that translates in to DoWII is going to be interesting and i'm highly looking forward to it. Even more so now. My older brother brought the starter box set beacuse he saw it on sale and got it dirt cheap and he brought it up while he was home for chirstmas and we played a bit. It's gotten me wanting to collect again if not play... so i'm planing an eldar army to build up to next year now :D fun if only for the paniting. I need to get some of my freinds in to it, a few of them used to play.

Anyway it means i've been dealing with the table top game more reading the books and stuff and that always makes the DoW feel more awesome.

I suck really bad at RTS games.. even though I really ENJOY the Relic ones. They all take tons of work and reading to know how to play. Like becoming good at a fighting game... but without the chance to get a good hit in when you are still a noob.

Still... I want this. As it's probably the only RTS game moving the genre forwards, from Relic, the only studio that wants to really change RTS games on the PC. Sadly, I know Starcraft 2 is going to outsell it 5 to 1 because everyone wants a game from 1998 with better graphics.

I can agree to this. I hate most RTS games. The Relic ones have been great though. Lots of fun without the usual pitfalls. They also are just so awesomely animated in the hand to hand combat, its hard not to love them.

Also. Deadend- Awesome little icon. SD-Jerusalem.. where did you find that?

Company of Heroes seems to have paid off pretty well. I have no doubt THQ will give them the marketing backing they deserve given how well those games have been received by fans and critics alike.

This game looks like a winner from all angles to me, since I don't play too many RTS games, I'll enjoy Starcraft 2 as well. 2009 looks sweet already.

Hot.

how have i not seen that?!?!

The funny thing is the more i see of the game the more "faithful" to the table top game it seems to be than the first one. Some people have seemed put off by the smaller number of squads and no/little base building. Having played small 500-600 point games with my brother, i don't know, that footage dose seem more like a live action view on part of the table in a way dow never did.

Depending on how many squads you can get up to it could end up that your playing with the same number of squads as a standard medium to large table top game. Add in rpg elements that seem to be expanded from the campaign rules and... well... it's going to be awesome. DoW took the game as inspiration for an rts and now there honing it to be a rts analogue of the table top which has never really been done before.

I talk to much.

Oi! the only red marks in my posts are under the i's thank you very much. There is not one word spelt wrong in my post. Weather or not i've managed to pick the right word from the spell checkers list is a whole other matter. That or picking the wrong for words that sound the same.

I was referring to manual spell checking. Last time I checked, 'Too' had two O's.

Have i not explained this enough already? You can show me a few paragraphs of text which has a Too spelt To and there's ever chance i'll miss it. Even if i'm told there is a mistake. I can't help it, sometimes i just can't see a mistake no matter how hard i look. So can we get back to the topic at hand? which is the awesomeneslskfhesersljadjd that is dow2... see i didn't notice that last word was spelled wrong... wait, hang on...

I have trancended the need to check system requirements, as I have a Magic PC now.
But I just want to say that I hate RTS games...even other Relic ones like Company of Heroes.
Yet DoW was one of the only RTS games to ever make me play obsessively. I learned all the keyboard macros and everything for the Eldar (Dark Reapers + FoF FTW).
I'm worried about DoW2 though, as I hear it's using the CoH engine and has turned into a more small scale squad based game. I hope the multiplayer at least is the same as before.

It actually didn't do too well. The Relic guys I talked to at PAX, as well as the THQ head honchos I met at the shareholder's meeting all told me that despite the critical praise the game got, the sales were middling. And it also has the distinction of being one of the most pirated games in China. When the 2.102 (I think, the latest one in the summer) patch was released, there was over 1 million downloads from China, even though there is no distribution of the game there.

As for the game, Tycho and myself built new systems for this game. I know I'll be able to play it for sure now, as my old P4 was below spec, and my graphics card upgrade path stopped at the 7800GTX. Upgrading to a C2D and PCI-Express graphics has re-opened my world!

Beta info should be up, tomorrow the 8th.

Beta will be held on steam! JANUARY 21st for those who have soulstorm 28th for the rest... the fact that it's been hosted on steam gives me a good feeling that they are going to go with steam as there DRM which is nice.

I hope they put soulstorm up as the steam weekend deal... since i don't have a copy at the moment i might be tempted to pick it up. Partly to have a DoW game on steam partly for the beta :D

Aw man... the game isn't coming out until July-Fall 09 now? Well at least I have time now to L2P CoH.

Good way to pump up sales of Soulstorm. That expansion needs a squad AI patch, severely. Stat!

Didn't Iron Lore do Soulstorm? The studio that did Titan Quest and is now gone? I know they did one of the expansions.

I am also so happy it's a January Beta Test.

Correct, but, Relic stated before Iron Lore's demise that they'd be the ones responsible for patching the expansion. This they have done twice, happily, but the bloody squad AI is still retarded. You'll have a squad jerkin' off standing happily next to a squad being ass raped by Flayed Ones.

That's no bug! It's a FEATURE... to inspire better micromanagement and taking command.. or something.

I never bought Soulstorm, and I never will. I played it at a friends house and it pretty much destroyed everything that was good about the original game and the first two expansions.
It simply wasn't fun. Aircraft were a horrible idea, and as previously stated, the squad AI is retarded.
Also, why the hell do I want Sisters of Battle? If Chaos are too much like Space Marines, then Sisters definitely are.

But they are Space Marines... with breasts! That's better than Space Marines... with tentacles!

It wasn't a bad expansion for the single player, though the aircraft were stupid. By the time Soulstorm came out the Multiplayer had died out mostly.

Hmm. Boobies or tentacles...there's probably some twisted anime out there where I can get both, but if I had to pick it'd be boobs every time.
Good point.

I'm tempted to google search by copy/pasting that line now. Rule 34 wouldn't really apply for 40k would it?

I don't know. It's pretty specific, but I can imagine there being at least one person out there who thought it would be a good idea to draw some.

Edit: I did a Google image search and it didn't come up with anything except for this, which is pretty epic but must have taken forever.

http://www.strategyinformer.com/news/3003/relic-entertainment-takes-inspiration-from-valve-for-dawn-of-war-ii-drm-procedures

n an interview to be published within the next few hours, Dawn Of War II's Lead Designer Jonny Ebbert told Strategy Informer about Relic Entertainments plans for Downloadable Content, which will be released for free as a way to reward those that purchase the game instead of obtaining it illegally.

"We have a lot of seriously exciting plans for DLC. We really want to give our players a top-notch online experience and we want to reward our players for playing our game. We want to give out steady doses of free downloadable content because we believe in rewarding people who buy the game" said Ebbert.

When talking about DRM solutions, Ebbert said that it would be taking the approach that Valve pioneered to try and avoid implementing any DRM procedures; "the reason we don’t like DRM solutions is because they punish the innocent and they have to jump through all these hoops. We don’t want to do that so we’re going with the approach that Valve pioneered to just reward the people who actually bought the game with cool stuff. Free downloadable, regularly accessible stuff that enhances the game and then that’s an incentive for the people who didn’t buy the game to buy it. So we’ve got a really bold, robust strategy for that and we’re going to be revealing more details in about a month, but I think players are going to like it."

There are no words for how happy this makes me. They are going down the valve/sins root of free content to reward people for buying the game.... awesomezors
