I love when a game (or film) takes its story or setting from real places, real people, and the legends of those people and places.
While the first Uncharted seemed to only tackle the "person" aspect of what I just mentioned, Uncharted 2 looks to be going deeper, and broader.
Here's what we've got:
Person - Marco Polo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marco_Polo)
It looks to be focused on his return trip to Europe from spending time with Kublai Khan around 1291. Amy Hennig says, "This time we’re going with Marco Polo. Our catalyst is this man who cataloged all of his journeys – all the details of everything that happened in his life – but despite that he left one gaping hole.”
That hole would be the year 1292. So it goes that when Marco embarked for his return to Europe he left with 14 ships and about 600 or so men. However, he arrived to Europe with only ONE single ship and near a dozen or so men left. Marco never said what happened to those other ships and his men. Not a word.
Place - Shambhala (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shambhala)
While I'm sure the game doesn't completely take place here, it will be a destination - a place Drake will probably be searching for. Given the recent trailers and teasers we've seen for the game and the apparent location of the legendary "Shangri-La" (the Himalayas), I'd say we get there at some point in the game. Why we get there seems to be the point of the next little tidbit.
Thing - Cintamani Stone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cintamani)
Here it is folks. It's our Ark, Shankara Stone, our Grail, or...no, it won't be our Crystal Skull. The stone itself is said to grant wishes of its bearer.
The Cintamani stone is pulled from both Hindu and Buddhist legend, which ties closely back to Shambhala, meaning we'll probably get a lot of those traditions thrown at us in the game in some form or another.
A lot of the information above comes from Wikipedia, of course, but the game aspects all came from a new article up over at Edge (http://www.edge-online.com/magazine/uncharted-2-uncovered). It goes into the story of the game a little bit and then talks about gameplay. Definitely worth a read if you're a fan.
