But then again, I'm a huge fan of the bearded, messy hair, crazy look. I'd do it if it wouldn't prevent me from having a girlfriend.

If he wants to pull a Grizzly Adams, more power to him. Our culture is just obsessed with stupid minute details of the lives of celebrities. I saw a headline news article talking about the fact that the Bush's cat died. Really? Their cat passing away is big news?

I wonder why so many do.

Probably has something to do with how little time people need to actually work to survive nowadays. It is hard to spend all of that idle time which is the dividend of an ever-increasingly automated production chain.

Not only do these people have oodles of free time, they often have otherwise meaningless lives, lives without the least bit of adventure, challenge, or accomplishment. So they live vicariously through the lives of celebrities, they find things to worship like deities or sports franchises.

On top of that, these people with meaningless lives and lots of free time tend to roam in packs. Fixating on a few celebrities or the New York Jets gives them a ready source of discussion material whenever they are together, a common bond to cement them as a tribe.

In the end it is just another barometer measuring the decay of a society.

Idle hands are the devil's tools

I just read an article on Entertainment Weekly's website (It was linked from CNN...I swear!)

"It's an art project for him," says a source. "He's going full out."

He may feel like he's pulling a Kaufman, but he's clearly drugged up in almost every recent appearance. I mean, really drugged up. Not just stoned to loosen up the ol' nerves. Like, "I am living on a different planet right now" kind of drugged up.

I really enjoyed the movies he did, and I'll be pretty sad if he ruins his life with drugs. I couldn't care less if he wants to deprive the world of his acting, but I don't want to see the guy kill himself.

National Kato

He's either deep into some drugs or playing around. He's being followed by Casey Affleck, filming all of this for a documentary supposedly chronicling his move to music. It could be a setup for something else.

His Letterman appearance just seemed too much. Like he was trying too hard. The fact that Letterman kept him on past the commercial break leaves me suspicious.

EW (http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/2009/02/joaquin-phoen-1.html?cnn=yes) just thinks it's Joaquin being Joaquin:

...from Nov. 3, 2000. An excerpt:

"And the No. 1 bizarre talk show guest is...The Yards star [Joaquin] Phoenix! On a Late Show With David Letterman appearance, the actor came off as hilariously dazed and confused, claiming he couldn't remember his birthday or, at one point, where he got his tattoo. This follows a May spot on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in which Phoenix was so distracted Leno requested that he ''be here in person'' next time.

Phoenix's camp had no comment, but Late Show exec producer Maria Pope replies: ''He's been on three times now. The first couple of times we thought there was a gas leak in the greenroom. Now we've determined, no, that's just Joaquin.''

This whole thing is starting to remind me of Incident at Loch Ness (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incident_at_Loch_Ness). Before that one even started filming, they put out fake press releases and had everyone believing that Werner Herzog was making a documentary called "Enigma of Loch Ness", and had another fake documentary filming him. It all wound up being fake stuff to use in the real movie.

I suspect a year or so from now we'll get to see the actual project that Phoenix is working on.
