Hey everyone,

In case you haven't heard about Dipswitch, it's a webcomic presented weekly, bi-weekly, and semi-annually over at PlayitReviewit.com

Check it out, then come back here. (http://www.playitreviewit.com/dipswitch)

Okay, well, the latest Joystic Weekly Webcomic Wrapup jogged me into doing something extra for the people who like Dipswitch, and would like a more stable release schedule for updates.

Never fear, however, the Dipswitch you know and love will be true and loyal to the CoG and PiRi communities. Without both CoG and PiRi, I wouldn't be on the map at all, much less the last place contestant in last week's Wrapup.

That said, some have asked for an RSS feed, and regular updates.

Siraris handles a LOT around here, and Dipswitch, naturally, isn't his primary focus. So, I've decided to take the burden off of him, and place it on me!

I'm still working on the bland site design, but in the raw, you can find Dipswitch over here. (http://dipswitchcomic.comicgenesis.com)

The site includes a few Dipswitch episodes not published over here...and I'll have comment functionality sometime soon!

I figure, I'll also post this as news, but this particular announcement is for the fans of Dipswitch...all six of you guys. :)

I didn't recognize the terrain-gun one when I went through a bunch of the archives so I just wanted to say it's quite funny and the player character soldier is well written :)

It was easy to write because Jett Brody (RAAAADDDDDD!! RAD! MY NAME IS RAD!) says pretty much that verbatim. I played the demo, which had that exchange. Then I played the game after renting it.

Time wasted, lesson learned. Don't play games about guys named Jet Brody.

Well, the wheels are turning, and it looks like Ill have a Zrikz website soon.

The Comicgenesis thing was to insure that the comics were being updated. I mean, Joystiq has the Weekly Webcomic Wrapup, and if I'm not updated and stuff, I can't enter. I can't enter, means I can't win, I can't win means...

No cash and prizes.

Gentlemen, I LOVE cash and prizes.

Awesome Dan! I gotta say, having and keeping a reliable scedule with your comic is a HUUUUUUUGE part of becoming a success: if people don't know when they can click on your page and see something new, they quickly forget to bother (not us, of course. Just people).

As a matter of fact, back in the early five years of Penny Arcade, Tycho mentioned over and over again that updating on schedule was far and away the most important step in becoming a popular webcomic. More important than being funny or well drawn, according to him, and I actually agree.

Zomg its almost time.. almost done. Comics section is done, figuring out a plan for the front page / news / etc as well as RSS integration. Probably wont get those done tonight, but maybe.. will at least show off the comics section and get some opinions.

Well, I think I'm giving up for now.

alien, PM me =/

Here is what I've done so far: http://dipswitch.fathomthat.org

Let me know what ya think / if anything is brokeded.

Still need to do RSS and I'm still messing with colors / need aliens feedback, I know the blue / gray is hard to read in some spots.

Alien will have to go through and add in all previous comics, I did the first three.. I'm not that nice ;p

Zrikz
01-05-2009, 11:28 PM
So I spoke with Alien and we got the colors pretty much settled. The rest of the comics will be added in the coming days.

Alien has full access, so he can now add comics whenever he pleases.

Working on RSS and a comments section under the comics and a few backend things.

How cool am I? Very cool =/

I just learned some AJAX stuff...

http://dipswitch.fathomthat.org/4

look at the bottom, there is now a spot under every comic to post/view comments.

It pulls the data on the fly with ajax as well. If it doesnt show up instantly for you just click hide comments / show comments and it will refresh the data.

There appears to be a problem with IE.. at least mine, where IE caches the whole page and does not refresh the results after viewing it for the first time, but hey. Works for chrome/firefox/etc, so oh well.

Everyone give it a try and lemmie know how it looks!

/edit oh and someone better be impressed, because I am.. =/

I'm very impressed! It's a sleek and sexy site.

Is there any way to get the larger comics to center themselves? All the big ones push over to the right, and leave a decent chunk of empty space on the left, so I have to scroll over. I'm currently viewing it in FireFox on a laptop at 1024x768 res, if that helps.

Well done!

There is now an AJAX search with auto complete feature at the bottom / a search page as well.. I'm still working on getting a good layout down too.

Not to make more work for you, but a really great feature would be to tag comics so you can know what they are about and then a way to search those.

I always find it frustrating if I want to find a comic about a certain game or something on a site and tehre's really no way to search that.

Yeah, I actually have an extra field that could be used for that, someone would just have to go through and add in tags though. The extra field is currently unused. Good idea though, perhaps in the near future!

Anyways, Be sure to watch the site and or the rss feed for updates.. the updates will auto go live at I believe 12am PST.. whatever the servers time is on, I think its PST. One going live tonight and Monday.

And Bap, tagging has begun. Once we get em mostly tagged I'll put up a search box or just change the current one to look through the tags instead of titles.

This is my fault, I believe. The pictures aren't always in the center of the square with the black border. If you look at the ones on PiRi, you can see that, the comics are aligned weird. The newer ones will conform to a standard, so that they're easier on browsers, etc. :)

I think the Starcraft to burger analogy only really works if Blizzard lied up-front about what you were going to be getting. If SC2 came out and there was only one box with all of the units on it and then after getting your money they informed you of the situation/three-game-deal, the analogy might hold. I get that it's satire, but it's not really even accurate satire and I don't think the main character has a grasp on the actual matter itself. Unless that was the point and it was then over my head?

I may have thought too hard on this Starcraft burger thing.

alienmastermind
01-10-2009, 01:08 PM
The point was, for me: We're going to give you three awesome games. All together these are equivalent to what you've come to expect from a 'franchise' sequel (I.E. all the parts of the first game will be in the second game). However, the three stories in one from the first game have been spread out to three titles. All three 'chapters' told one story.

Now, the three chapters, each lush and full of story, may not tell the full story. We won't know until we get to the 'Halo 2'-like ending of the first one. So, I can't buy just the Zerg chapter and get the whole 'burger'.

So, sez me, 'Why not just sell me a 150.00 game?'. I'd buy it, because I am a HUGE Blizzard fan. :)

AM

Blue
01-10-2009, 02:21 PM
Ah, gotcha. That makes more sense. Keep in mind I haven't been following SC2 a whole lot (as I'm balls-awful at RTS games) so I'm doing my best to keep it off my radar, but haven't they said one "expansion" has the content of the original plus Brood combined? If that's the case, then I'd say you're getting a good deal more content over the course of three which, I'd say, absolutely justifies the price of entry.

But I'm arguing opinion which wasn't the point. Anyhow: I like how your art continues to get better. I'm not saying your art was bad to begin with (far from it, I think you're very talented), I just think it's cool getting into a comic on the ground level and getting to watch it/you evolve over time. You're putting time and effort into Dipswitch and it definitely shows. I look forward to seeing what you do with it in the future :).

Couple minor things about the site, Zrikz.

The comic search has a button labeled "Send". That's kinda confusing. It should be labelled "Search" or something like that.

All the comics listed in the comics listing (http://www.dipswitchcomics.com/comics_listing.php) as well as the search results page have links that don't work, and they reroute weird. For example, a link to comic #32 points to http://dipswitch.fathomthat.org/32, and when you click that link, it resolves to http://dipswitchcomics.com32/?id=32 and then that redirects you to a Qwest fail page.

Thanks doc, thought I managed to get em all. And the send / search thing is an easy fix!

/edit Think I fixed all the links / search / send buttons. Let me know if I missed any. Appreciate all the help. Got rid of the hard coded links so it just uses the directory now.

It was probably doing a weird reroute thing because I made dipswitch.fathomthat.org have a .htaccess redirect to the new site and nuked the original files there.

alienmastermind

The problem with that comic I believe is that almost no one shares my ambivalence. I feel like the dude at the end of Body Snatchers (The 50s version) yellling at people as the pods are getting trucked into town.

I get that every game will be a 'full' game. But it won't be a 'full' story like the first one. I don't care if the bun is the tastiest, most perfect bun in the world, it's not the whole cheeseburger. I love Blizzard, and they SHOULD have sold the whole thing rather than phased release.

I think his danger lights are coming on, like when you shoot at him, how his face lights turn red?

I have to admit, it took me a couple of minutes to figure out what was happening.

Ah. Obtuse humor.
Yes. The Big Daddies turn red when they're in danger.
On the flop, playing Texas Hold Em...even with a pocket pair of 1s, it's a bad hand.

Hence, bad poker face. :)

It's a very niche kind of joke.

MUAHAHAHAHA! My crudely drawn fart jokes drew you in, then my masterfully crafted somewhat obscure reference to a commonplace happening in a non-gaming context caused you slight embarassment!

I. AM. THE. ALIENMASTERMIND.

In all seriousness, the whole thing was to allow me to draw an abashed Big Daddy playing hold 'em and saying 'Gruuuuuuunk'. :)

And don't forget the delicious 'Golden Griddle', buddy. Syrup + Oats = Mmmph Mmmph, grooaaan (http://dipswitchcomics.com/39).

I too understand and enjoy the controls, but have an issue with the fact that the AI teammate moves like lightning. And, the demo exploits the flaw in the control scheme because of the scenario. Which, would usually be where I've stocked up on shottie shells and/or rockets and grenades. :)

New comic on Monday, of course!

Just a suggestion for the Facebook page, you don't need to send a message everytime there is an update. Maybe just post announcements on the group page, or instead turn it into a fan page, if that's possible.

For me, it's redundant because I have dipswitch on my Morning Coffee extention for M/W/F, and I see the updates here as well.

Still, keep up the great work.

Some of the folks in the Facebook group haven't taken the hint of joining up here or adding the RSS feed to their browsers. :o

But, I'm only going to add an update from here on out if Dipswitch is nominated for the Webcomic Wrapup at Joystiq, and not the daily comic. I was a little overzealous because of bein' new and all, and people didn't know about my comic. :)

Thanks for the compliments, and I'm glad I have readers who care enough to talk about what I do, and offer suggestions. Sincerely, this is really cool of you guys to keep reading.

More Dipswitch goodness on Friday, which is not necessarily a gaming issue, but IS probably one of the funniest comics I've drawn in the history of Dipswitch.

And for the Colonists, I have a special thread (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?p=178197#post178197)dedicated to oddball comics that I'm currently working on.

Second bit of Dipswitch news: We're part of isitfunnytoday.com.

That site is definitely good for exposure for the comic, and is doing a great deal to drive hits to the website.

So, even if you don't think it's funny today, you can let me know by voting the site up or down!

Just some constructive criticism, your word bubble placement doesn't always read in the intended order. For example, in the first frame of your recent one, everyone I've showed it to reads it as, 1) "So what's for breakfast?" 2) "AGAIN?!" 3) "This bowl of congealed gorilla fat."

I'm sure it isn't easy to lay out a panel's scene to allow word bubbles, but keep at it and I'm sure it will start to flow.

New comic (http://www.dipswitchcomics.com/79)is up for everyone to see! And, a comment on isitfunnytoday.com is forthcoming.

Let me just say for the record, that there are five people who simply hate the comic. OR they hate me. :) Because every comic, no matter how good or bad, five people minimum say it's not good.

The theory from most of my friends and the wife is: It's five other artists.

My theory is: Most of the people reading on isitfunnytoday.com think Ziggy is hilarious, and buy their clothes at Ducky's Big and Retarded Helmet Boutique.

Unless you're a Colonist. Then you buy your clothes at Jimbo's House of Genius Labcoats and Monocles.
