Demo's out:

The singleplayer is actually kind of fun. It's reminiscent of The Two Tower's game, as in it's a confined beat'em up with combos and such. The multiplayer however just doesn't work that well. A Battlefield type game doesn't work as well without vehicles to speak of or guns. The floaty movement and melee just doesn't feel that exciting. Frankly I think they should have gone with something much more like Age of Chivalry or Pirates, Vikings, and Knights instead of a battlefront style game. Having trolls and ents show up is cool, but it's ultimately a letdown in terms of basic gameplay.

In the end I think if your looking for a co-op beat'em up then Conquest might be fun for you when he game comes out. If your looking for a fun multiplayer then look elsewhere.

I was going to create a thread on this, actually. I played the PS3 demo a few days ago and had loads of fun. I'll definitely be checking it out when it's released.

I tried it.

Was fun, but not a chance in hell I'd buy it. Possibly an ok rental but I doubt I'll even do that.

I just imagine I'd get bored with it in the space of an hour, hell, I got bored before the demo finished. As you say though, some people might like it for the co-op gaming.

I think the whole LOTR game phase should perhaps take a break.

i think i'm going to be picking this up, i have been craving a fun multiplayer distraction lately, and i think this will fit the bill nicely.

i think i'll be snagging it for the PS3.

I played through the single-player demo and then played multiplayer for a bit. It was somewhat entertaining and I think has the potential to be a lot of fun. Question, though...are there more classes, spells, special moves, etc. than what is featured in the demo? Because if that is all that there is, there simply isn't enough there to justify a purchase. I hope they have a system like BF2 or COD where you unlock new classes and specials and such as you play.

Did any of you play Dark Messiah of Might and Magic? The multiplayer in that game is very similar to this (at least on the PC).

I took the main menu's advice and hopped straight into the multiplayer, skipping the single player junk; these game are all about the multiplayer anyway.

My first reaction was that there's a lot of game mechanics to soak in all at once. Mages are putting up projectile shields and healing teammates, scouts are cloaking behind enemy lines, archers are tagging cloaked scouts with poison arrows to track them, there's ents, orcs, people on horseback, Gandalf and a Balrog all running around. Even the basic warrior class has a lot of subtlety to his play style, you've got a throwing axe to close distance on ranged enemies, blocks, evades, a rudimentary combo system, and a rage meter that can augment your attacks and turn the tide of a fight.

This is not a game which is immediately accessible, and the uneven presentation isn't doing the game any favors. Some people will undoubtedly complain about the visuals, but they're functional and that's all I care about, there's a pretty fun game underneath. The demo is being run on a massive bank of dedicated EA servers, and it runs pretty smoothly online.

I'm definitely going to give this a rent asap. It's the perfect Gamefly game, and will probably keep my interest for a month or two.

I got the PS3 demo as well, but had forgotten I DLed it. Will give it a shot over the weekend.

The single player portion of the demo is pretty much a tutorial that covers everything you need to know. I think the game is fun, but it just seems rather limited. I'm hoping you unlock new spells/moves/etc, but I doubt that will be the case.

I'm really pumped for this and wish I had internet at home just for the demo.

I loved Battlefront, I love LOTR, I love Dynasty Warriors, and I love stabbing things. Awesome.

I enjoyed the demo. It's no Battlefront, but I'm not really a huge close combat. I might give this a try when it comes out.

Hated it. The combat didn't feel smooth at all and despite the LotR license (or perhaps because of it) it felt like an incredibly generic fantasy setting.

Huh... I felt the combat was very smooth, and I loved the LotR setting. This can mean only one thing - one of us is very, very wrong.

It takes a big man to come out and admit that so openly, it's good that you've come to grips with it. ;)

I'm noticing that. :)

I was a bit harsh, I didn't hate it, but it did feel wholly unremarkable in pretty much every way.

Wasn't bad actually, but not impressed enough to consider buying the full game at full price.

Put me in the "Hated the shit out of it!" column.

Thought it looked like an Xbox game, the animation sucked, and the gameplay was busted. I'm still just bitter over the death of "The White Council". You tease us with Oblivion set in Middle Earth, and reward us with a half baked Battlefront clone? Woe!

Aside: What the hell is going on with Pandemic? One of the most technically sound developers of last gen has certainly been cranking out some inferior looking product thus far this gen.
