Had an itch for a space fighting sim. Freespace 2 is six bucks on GOG.com

It's like sleeping with an ex that knows all my favorites. Just had to share. Any other fans?

First off, why pay when it's free?

Second, why pay for the inferior version?

It's free and open source. You get modern graphics, custom campaigns, and even a port of Freespace 1 in the FS2 engine.

Enjoy.

And yes, I love Freespace 2. Greatest space sim of all time, even beating out TIE Fighter. Simply amazing.

Oh, I plan to check out what they've been doing with the FSO project, but don't you need an installed version of FS2 anyway? I am looking forward to checking out the BSG mods.

Can you recommend a new mouse for me? My optical doesn't let me bank left fast enough.

Yeah, I guess you can use all the open source stuff with your copy of FS2. GOG needs all the support it can get!

And rather than a mouse, I'd recommend using a 360 controller. I used one for Freespace 2 and it was great!

If you're dead-set on a mouse, though, try a Razer, Logitech MX518, or G5. They'll serve you well.

I LOVE freespace 2. I believe it was Norse who gave out a bunch of games and I won FreeSpace 2.

Freespace 2 is still the best space simulation out there.

The story is still probably one of the best ever. The Shivans rank as one of the coolest bad guys in video games. At no point do you ever really win, they're just too badass.

The genre hasn't done anything in forever. I keep hoping someday someone will make a Freespace 3. Of course it would probably involve the destruction of Earth and the human race, but whatever, it would still be cool.

So do you need the original game to check out the new modern graphics version?

wooo...Freespace 2. The game that introduced us the fun of flying though space fog and the joy of unavoidable "beam weapons". Oh yeah...you have a single good ship...The Valkyrie II.

I maintain the first game is superior.

You take that back.

Okay, that was hasty. The first game had the better story and final boss capital ship. Beam weapons were so goddamn awesome and they were not unavoidable. Space fog was beautiful.

Great game.
Personally I ended up enjoying Starlancer more, not sure why, probably the various nationalities and their wars but this Freelancer, and Starlancer are all so much damn fun.

Uh...

We're not talking about Freelancer.

Hell, I'm happy anytime people are talking about any space fighting sim. X-Wing, Star Fox, forget it! I'm happy.

Hear that developers? I'M HAPPY!!

X-Wing

I would cut out my left testicle for another proper X-Wing game.

I replay Freespace 2 every couple years. Was actually looking for any decent similar games that have come out in the last couple years. Seems to be a pretty dead genre.

But you should be, because Freelancer is awesome. :D (though Freespace is pretty fun too).
