View Full Version : RJ45 connector madness...

So I attached RJ45 connectors to cables I bought a few weeks ago. One was for my 360, the other for my brothers PC. I lined up all the pairs(green, brown, orange and blue) on both sides and it doesn't work on both the PC and the 360. I did the same thing at my dad's office and it worked then. What the hell am I doing wrong?

Are these crossover cables?

Nope. Do they need to be?? I m pretty sure my router does not require a crossover as I am using a through cable on my PC.
If you are connecting the 360 and PC directly to each other, a la no router or hub, then you will need to splice it into a crossover cable. You also may have fucked up some where. Try again.

Depends...the 360 has an auto-detector on it's NIC card...could be the PC doesn't though.

No I'm connecting to a router.
I have my 360 hooked up to a cable running across the floor. Its a messy setup and that's why I am trying to use a larger cable. Also, I really need to connect my brother's PC. I am sick of fighting over computer time!

Sooo...Two pc's connected to one router? Are you getting link lights when they are connected or no? I've had some issues with crimped plugs not fitting well into ports...just make sure you push them in until you here a click or see a link light.

Not true. The original Xbox required a crossover cable to connect to a PC, the 360 doesn't.

Sorry. Was going off of standard network cable protocol

Well, some time I get the link light, some times I don't. I searched and on every site, it says you have to split one pair. I know the internal capacitance and reactance of pair has effects on communication(Radiating Systems 305), but do they really need to be split.
EDIT: 666th post. I am the BEAST!

Do you have a cable tester or multimeter? Maybe its not crimped properly inside. Or try the cable with another computer.
Also note network cables are not crimped exactly in pairs. Pin 4 and pin 6 are swapped.

how do I check a 50 feet line with a multimeter?
As I said, is it necessary to swap the pairs? I am gonna try it anyway.

Yeah, 50ft is gonna suck for testing... No point getting a cable tester if you don't do it for a living, though they're relatively cheap. Made in china cheapo ones go for about $15 I think.
