View Full Version : Best PC Gaming Mouse?

My mouse is old. I mean, it functions just fine for pointing and clicking things but I've used other peoples machines with gaming mice and it just feels smoother. I'm in the market for a new mouse and I'm wondering what people have and why they like it or wish they had of gotten something else, etc. Here are a few that I'm looking at.

SteelSeries Ikari (http://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-Ikari-Laser-Mouse-Black/dp/B000W6MEXS/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1230746257&sr=8-1)

Logitech G9 Laser Gaming Mouse (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2177894,00.asp)

Microsoft SideWinder Mouse (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2192281,00.asp)

Razer DeathAdder (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2084987,00.asp)

Ideazon Reaper Edge (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2229549,00.asp)

So far I'm leaning towards either the SteelSeries Ikari because PC Gamer rated it the best mouse ever and I figure these guys play a lot of games so that's pretty high praise or the Razer DeathAdder. I like both of these because they don't have a lot of lights. I hate LEDs.

Anyway, what do you guys think and why?

EDIT: Oops, forgot to add the ExtremeTech (http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2337648,00.asp) link.

Note: For the Razer mice, you can turn off the LEDs from the software.

I just got a Lachesis, and one of the first things I did was turn off the pulsating logo light. I left the scroller light on, but it can be turned off, too.

It's replacing a Microsoft optical 5000, so I can't really comment on how the Lachesis compares to other gaming mice. I'm still getting used to the higher sensitivity, but it's great to have a "notched" scroll wheel again.

I use a G5. I like that the texturing keeps it from ever really feeling greasy or sweaty. However, I can't really comment on how it relates to other gaming mice.

Logitech MX518 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104178)

Nothing really exciting, but it has buttons to increase/decrease mouse sensitivity on the fly, which can be really useful for some. Plus, its well priced.

Picking a mouse is extremely subjective, and reviews will only get you so far. Be prepared to return whatever you get.

I think that's the mouse my roommate has. I haven't played any games with it but it makes his mouse movement so smooth it's ridiculous. I fiddled with the settings to see if it was just the sensitivity but I can't replicate it.

I have been using the G5 for a year or so; the texture is nice and it fits my hand. I don't use the thumb buttons much. It looks like you have gotten 3 write-ins for the G5.

So I am seeing the G5 a lot and I'm really considering it but I have another question. What's the difference between the G5 and the G9?

Wackman3000
12-31-2008, 12:43 PM
Mostly the shape, which I did not like.

I believe the G5 is based off an older gaming mouse and it just feels right in your hands. I found the G9 to feel clunky in my hand.

I've got a PAX Limited Edition Razer Deathadder that is cooler than anything that you have. :p

It replaced a Logitech MX518 that is probably one of the better mice out there if they could just beef up the Teflon feet. I've had two MX518's lose their Teflon pads. The Razer has large secure pads - Nice!

I gave my son a Razer Diamondback 3G for Christmas (Got it cheap from the GoGamer Black Friday sale); haven't heard a report back from him yet.

Yeah, it seemed kind of like it had a lot of corners which seemed odd for the hand.

Ugh, fuck the G9. That thing feels horrible. Get a G5. The new ones with the two thumb buttons are really nice. I have the older model with only one button and I always said the only way they could make a better mouse was to add another thumb button. Then they did!

That being said, the G9 really is a better mouse then the G5. If logitech ever comes out with a G5 like grip for the G9, I'll get in in a second. They did mention that they were going to come out with more then just the two grips that shipped with the mouse.

If mr Razer Diamondback had holes, I would fuck them. It is a superbly designed mouse. Very responsive, button placement on either side is perfect(even for my sausage fingers). Only downside is sticker-shock from 50-60 bucks depending. It is worth every penny. Shame you missed GoGamer's sale last month, I snagged a new one for 20 bucks.

G5 for me as well. The G9 is a piece of shit for most gamers cause it requires the user to hold it in a "claw" format. By that I mean the mouse is physically much shorter then a G5. Where the G5 can be palmed (your palm pressing against the back of the mouse), the G9 is not long enough to palm without your fingers falling off the end. So you instead must raise your palm off of the mouse while keeping your fingers on the buttons to direct the mouse. Some gamers prefer this style but I think thats crap especially for longer playing sessions. Thus the G9 should not be considered at all if you prefer to palm your mouse.

I have to say I like the look of that Steelseries. I use a G5 and couldn't be happier. But if it melted into slag tomorrow I would probably buy that steelseries just to try it out.

Razer's quality is something to be desired of, i went through THREE diamondbacks and two copperheads over the course of 3 years, and I am not particularly hard on my mice, I had a regular 10 dollar microsoft optical that lasted me for several years prior to this. However they made good on the warranties and sent me back a new one each time which is the only reason i am still using a copperhead now.

I'm not contesting their quality. I have an old two button optical scroll wheel, from when they really first started doing scroll wheels. This thing is at least 6 years old. I want something with higher DPI. It's not a bad mouse. I just want something a little fancier.

I use a Logitech G9 over the G5 (which is an awesome mouse) because unlike most, I actually use the "claw" method of holding a mouse, and the G9 is designed specifically with that grip in mind.

Most will want to use the G5 instead, which is not *quite* as nice a mouse, but the differences are so negligible that you shouldn't notice at all.

Goronmon

Love my G5.

The G9 is a piece of shit for most gamers cause it requires the user to hold it in a "claw" format. Is that hand position weird? I realized a while ago that I hold mice with the "claw" as you put it. I think it's a by-product of having slightly large hands and using smaller mice in my earlier PC years. I tend to make vertical mouse movements using only my fingers.

Why not stick with the tried and true? I'm used to the feel of the MX518, and I'll probably not "upgrade" to another more expensive mouse if only because I'm used to the feel of my current one.
