Got a starter deck on a whim with a friend, and we spent two solid hours having some fun play time.

Only thing is, I suck.
So I'd like to talk to people who don't suck about the game.

I know mightbe is a god, but he hasn't been online for 25 days (is he ok? o.o).
Anybody else into this?

Oh, and I'd like to add, this was really fun.
My friend and I are going to get super competitive with this.

You think the CCG is bad, try the miniatures game!

Mrs. Jonno bought me a ton of both for Christmas.

Isn't Mightbe really into WoW? How long ago was it that Wrath of the Lich King came out...?

I try to stay away from collectible card games after Magic back many many years ago.

There's a miniatures game? Why wasn't I told about this?

I have some cards but I don't play much. I did learn the rules pretty well and could prolly answer basic questions. However, if you want to be competitive I can't help. I have no idea what the current metagame is like.

The fiance and I did just get a bunch of minis for Christmas though, and we were going to be learning the game for New Years.

There were a few cards we (my friend and I, both newcomers.) had questions about. One was this:

Engulfing Blaze
http://www.coolstuffinc.com/main_viewCard.php?Card_Name=Engulfing%20Blaze&viewtype=World%20of%20Warcraft%20TCG%20Cards

"Your hero deals 3 fire damage to each hero and ally."
How it's worded, it sounds like ALL allies and heroes on the field (regardless of who they belong too) take 3 damage.
He didn't agree, and thought it was just my side. So I'm not too sure.
Rule book wasn't too clear on it, either, so who knows.

edit: As a rule of thumb, interpret cards literally. If it says 'each', it means each one. Period.

You are correct, it damages every hero and ally in the game. Look at the abilities listed on this page. (http://www.wowtcgdb.com/type-ability.aspx) If it was only enemy characters that were effected, it would specify that it targets "opposing" or "target" characters. This card is a board sweeper, similar to Wrath of God in Magic: the Gathering. Cast it in a six player game for extra fun! Note that this card doesn't target, so untargetable allies are still effected by it.

...why would you use an ability that ONLY damages your cards? that doesn't make sense. Further, nnanji is right that there are specific words card games use if they want to specify only one side getting affected. If it was only your side that was hurt, it would say "friendly" or "your".

Yeah, after playing a few games, I've started interpreting literally as opposed to trying to reason it out.

I also got myself some Magic cards. I really enjoy Magic more than WoW so far, and I'm trying to build a decent deck. Going to shop around for more whites and greens, since I'm doing pretty good with those two as of now. My friend completely stomped me, but he's been building his for about two years now. Mine is fresh and my skill is low.

Both are fun as shit though.
New favorite hobby -.-

Ah magic, my old love. I still wish I was playing that game, but the cost of staying competitive was too much, and I couldn't bring myself to just play casually.

You mentioned being super-competitive, so I would recommend learning how to play in draft formats. These can be difficult to organize practice sessions for, as they require several players, but a local game shop should be able to help out. It's a great way to combine acquiring cards and practice of a popular limited format.

If you are looking at constructed deck play, I would suggest using proxy cards to practice with, and then buying the deck online from single card dealers. The cost of buying multiple rares as singles seems high, but the cost of trying to get those rare cards from boosters in nuts.

There is a local shop owned by a guy that's near my age.
He's really big into it (duh, he owns a comic shop), and I was buying some cards from him and chatting. He mentioned they're doing a draft tournament next month, so I'll probably sign up for it. I fear I'll embarass myself though, because I do not understand the game.

I am a fan of deck play (building and putting it up against friends and whatnot), but I'm seeing this is expensive. I've no idea what you mean by proxy. My deck as of now (either color of them, I really haven't started the focus yet) is complete shit and got raped. I plan on doing some research into it this week, but we'll see what that turns up.

A proxy card is a fake card. Pick up some of the card sleeves with opaque backs and use index cards to write all of the cards information on. Then you can play games with your friend (at home, don't try this at a tourney), tweak cards around, and fine tune the deck before purchasing the cards for the deck directly. Most of the commons and uncommons you'll pick up from draft games, but chasing rares is a sucker's game. I used to take all of my rares from draft and sealed deck games and sell them to cover the cost of the entry fees. That way, if yo win, great, but if you lose you're not really out too much.

The other great use for proxy cards is for tourney prep. Make proxy versions of all the powerful deck archetypes that you see either online or at the game shop. Then play your deck against them. A lot. Identify the decks' key cards and add cards to your deck to fight them. Identify the weaknesses in your deck that the other decks exploit and fix them. The field of possible decks that you might play against is called the metagame, and preparing your deck against the metagame will give you a huge advantage if you successfully predict the field.

I haven't played the game in many years, but assuming the colors still do the same things, a white/green deck should focus on 3 things: mana acceleration; fast, efficient creatures; and board control. Green should focus on producing more mana and bruisers that hit fast and hit hard. First turn, drop a forest and a Bird or Paradise or Llanowyr Elf. Second turn maybe a Troll Ascetic, something big and threatening that the opponent has to deal with or die. Use Giant Growth to surprise the opponent. After he blocks an elf, ccast it to make the elf a 4/4 and tear up the blocker. Cast it on an unblocked monster to deal the last 3 damage and win the game! Then keep attacking while your board control keeps the enemy off balance. White should focus on board control. Aura of silence to limit enemy enchantments and artifacts. Pacifism to deal with problem creatures, and Wrath of God to sweep the board and start over if things start to get out of hand. Make sure you hold a creature or two in your hand, that way after you cast Wrath you can summon some new fighters immediately and keep the pressure on! For the late game use a creature like Rhox or Serra Angel to get past blockers, or use Overrun to make your small creatures into a horde and overrun the defenses.

Hope any of that helps!

That's a lot to take in, but I'll do with it what I can. >.>
Thank you a ton!
