So, I finally got me a shiny black DS lite, used, from one of the local shops, and a copy of Pokemon Diamond, and even the fancy Nintendo headset to use with the online stuff.

I'm staying at a friend's house for a few days, and he's got an old Powerbook G4, on which I had installed OS X 10.3. I figured I could set up the Airport as a wireless point, and use that to get online with the DS, since he doesn't have a wireless router.

I managed to puzzle through getting internet sharing set up, after considerable monkeying about, specifically setting it up for 40-bit WEP encryption because I recalled that the DS couldn't handle anything but WEP, and I figured that'd be the most compatible.

Well, it's up and running, but the DS says it can't get an IP address from it. I know the access point's running, because I got the PSP to connect to it just fine and even did an internet search in the browser just to be sure.

I did notice that it periodically loses signal while it's running the connection test, and I'm worried that maybe the Wi-Fi in the thing might be bad, but it could also just be the DS being incompatible somehow with this set up.

Any ideas, suggestions, etc?

OK, I've tested it several more times since posting, and it still does the same thing. IT sits and sits and sits, then the little signal icon goes red with no bars for a moment, and I get an error. Every time.

I'm going to try and find somewhere tomorrow with free Wi-Fi and see if I can test it on a different connection.

Depends on the security settings on the router...is it only allowing access to certain MAC addresses?

Or...when in doubt, reboot the router?

Well, it's not really a router. It's a Powerbook, sharing it's internet connection by ethernet over the built-in Airport.

Not the most efficient device to do it with, but I don't feel like buying a wireless router just yet seeing as how I'm not even in my own place yet.

Well, I managed to find another access point on my DS, and it worked just fine, so it's not a hardware issue, just some kind of incompatibility with the Powerbook.
