Before you get all excited Katslover, I'm only dropping in once or twice a day. It seems like some former EvAvers want me to check out the site, while others seem to want me to jump ship.

That's won't be happening, as I'm still EvAv bound, but I'll try to come here and over at PiRi from time to time. :D

2D Boy has just announced that World of Goo will be coming to the US WiiWare service on Monday, October 13. That means in less than two weeks Wii owners will finally be able to enjoy this much-anticipated WiiWare title. There has still not been a finalized price announced, but it's expected to be in the 1000 to 1500 Wii Points range.

Eurogamer has an extremely positive review (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=249671) of the PC version of World of Goo, the author even suggests that he is more impressed by it than Braid.

The levels can be challenging, but they present themselves in a way that gently nudges you towards the solution. And if you make a mistake, your moves create time bugs, which you can click to undo a move. Unlike, say, ooh, off the top of my head, Braid, there's no sense that you're wrestling with someone who's more keen to show off than keep you interested.

If there's any justice, World of Goo will set the internet aflame and earn its creators a million dollars. The members of 2D Boy should be carried around in chariots while this glory lasts - because at some point, they're going to realise what a murderously high standard they've set for themselves, and run away forever.

Madstone will be released on WiiWare this Monday. The official press release from RiverMan Media: (WiiWare World (http://www.wiiware-world.com/news/2008/10/madstone_coming_to_wiiware_on_monday))

MADSTONE EXPLODES ONTO WIIWARE OCTOBER 6TH

(RiverMan Media 2008.10.03)

Puzzle fans set to experience earth-shaking Wii exclusive puzzler

TUCSON, Ariz., October 3, 2008 - RiverMan Media announced today that its anticipated puzzler MadStone will be released onto Nintendo's WiiWare service on October 6th. MadStone will initially be released in North America for 800 Wii Points. Called "Fresh and unique" by WiiWare-World.com and a "frantic game of mass destruction" by IGN, Madstone will thrill players with its fast-paced, innovative gameplay.

In the dynamic puzzle game, players must clear the path for their elemental MadStones to reach the bottom of the screen. Blocks can be broken by striking them directly or by the force of falling objects. Novices try frantically to break enough blocks while master players create cascading collapses with only a handful of direct strikes. Create a large enough combo, and players can shake the Wii Remote to cause an avalanche of destruction, leaving their opponents in ruins. MadStone features a mystical single-player journey and competitive two-player mode.

RiverMan Media is a small independent game developer located in Tuscon, Arizon. Founded by brothers Jacob and Paul Stevens, RiverMan Media's previous titles include the PC classics Cash Cow and Primate Panic.

An interview (http://www.wiiware-world.com/news/2008/10/wahoo_studios_ninjabee_interview_boingz) with Wahoo Studios on their upcoming Boingz title. (WiiWare World)

WW: How did you come up with the idea of Boingz in the first place?

Jeremy: The idea came from a brain storming session about games we could make for the Wii. I sat at my kitchen table doodling a bunch of ideas for mechanics and ‘playing’ with them on paper and in my head. Boingz was one that bubbled to the surface.

WW: Can you give us a brief explanation of the game play in Boingz?

Jeremy: Boingz gives you command of a bunch of stretchy characters. You can directly control one character at a time, using the Nunchuck to walk and jump. The remote is used to bend, stretch, flick, and pin characters. The goal of each level is to put the characters into color coded gates. Of course you only start with one active character, and have to wake up the others before they can join your party.

WW: What was it like developing a game that makes use of such a unique game controller as the Wii Remote?

Jeremy: It was fun. We wanted to make sure we provided a unique experience for the Wii user, something that made the player feel they were interacting with these little creatures – stretching, bending, and flicking them about. At the same time we didn’t want to make the game all about shaking and waggling the remote about. There are plenty of games that already offer that.

We also didn’t want to make a game that required players to practice extreme precision with the pointer. The pointer on the Wii just isn’t geared for it, and for folks like me who shake a ton, it’s a nightmare to try and deal with anything that requires a high level of pointing precision. To that end we made sure to design the game and its control in a manner that makes it easy to do what you mean to do, without fighting about the specifics of how you do it.

Along with the interview, there's also a 14-second gameplay video.

“The WiiWare version of Cave Story features all-new music rearranged by Yann van der Cruyssen … Each track is passed off while in-progress state to [Pixel] so that he can review and approve it.

Yes, the old music and graphics will both be retained via a switch. You’ll also be able to mix-and-match audio and visuals. So, if you like the old art and new music, or vice versa, you can do it.”

High Voltage has announced "High Voltage Hot Rod Show" for WiiWare. The press release, as taken from GoNintendo (http://gonintendo.com/?p=58918):

Hoffman Estates, IL – October 10, 2008 - High Voltage Software, Inc., one of the world’s largest independent developers, today announced High Voltage Hot Rod Show, an intense new racing title scheduled for release on the WiiWare downloadable service later this Fall.

High Voltage Hot Rod Show requires players to master more than the basic racing skills to compete. A unique stunt system gives players multiple ways to build boost, which drastically increases a Hot Rod’s speed. If you get too greedy, you might crash and burn! The game utilizes the company’s proprietary Quantum 3 Game Engine technology, which provides graphical performance and game play not possible on other Wii titles.

“We wanted High Voltage Hot Rod Show to be a fresh and exciting racing title for the Wii that would provide up to four friends with endless replay value,” said Kerry Ganofsky, CEO and founder of High Voltage Software. “The result is a game that is easy to pick up and play, but maintains a core of skill-based racing, which gives it special appeal.”

“Style was important to us on this project,” said Benjamin Savage, Lead Artist on the title. “We were inspired by the work of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and that led us to design some really exciting characters, Hot Rods, and even music. We hope players will love the direction we’ve taken.”

“We set the bar for ourselves very high with each new title” said Eric Nofsinger, Chief Creative Officer of High Voltage Software. “Not only have we created a fantastic racing title with support for split-screen racing and online leaderboards, but we’ve also demonstrated the incredible versatility of the Quantum 3 Game Engine.”

An interview (http://www.wiiware-world.com/news/2008/10/studio_walljump_interview_liight) with Studio Walljump on their WiiWare title, Liight. (WiiWare World)

WW: Where did the idea behind Liight actually come from?

NT: I was doing a contract at another local studio, and an engineer had come up with some super sweet stencil buffered lighting system, but it was just a tech demo. A designer there sent out an email opening a discussion on how they could use it in a game, but all the discussions I saw were centered around using it as headlights for a tank. I made a few outlines for games that weren’t combat based, and one of them was an example of a puzzle you could solve with lights. It turned out they had a pretty clear policy against contractors submitting game ideas (for legal reasons I guess), so I tucked it away, and that became Liight.

WW: Can you tell us more about the significance of the music that plays along with the lights? Does it play an important role in the game?

NT: It plays an important role in being totally awesome! So, the game is silent with the exception of soft wind blowing, until you start to solve a puzzle. Imagine you drag your first light onto the board, and light up a target, and it plays some neat little melody, just one instrument. Then you light up your next target, and a bass line kicks in. You screw up the first one somehow, and the melody fades back out. As more targets are lit, things layer and you really start to get some cool songs made up. Our sound guy made a huge library of techno loops that are all compatible with each other, that’s what the MP3 on our website are made out of. Those aren’t songs you unlock in the game; they’re just possible combinations that could happen. There is always a button to mute the music on the screen too, in case you’re having a hard time concentrating on the puzzle with all that music going.

WW: Can you tell us when we can expect Liight to hit the WiiWare service and how many Wii Points it will cost?

NT: We’re still learning, sometimes painfully, how long certain aspects of game development can take. Especially the bits we have to rely on other people for. We were originally planning on being in the launch window, but it took forever to get our developers license and to choose our middleware, Virtools 3DVia. Now we’re aiming for early next year.

Points is another thing, but I would like to see it at either 800 or 1000 points. I don’t want to see it go any higher. The original plan was Liight, 500 points, without Nonstop, at Wiiware launch. When it became clear we were going to miss that window, I decided we had to bulk up the title so it would still be a good value post-launch, and I think it will be. Now it’s got more game pieces, and Nonstop mode, which is huge.

This week's releases (Oct 13, 2008) are:

World of Goo (2D Boy, 1-4 players, Rated E for Everyone—Comic Mischief, 1,500 Wii Points): World of Goo is an award-winning, physics-based puzzle/construction game made entirely by two guys. Grab living, squirming, talking globs of goo to build structures, bridges, cannonballs, zeppelins and giant tongues. The millions of Goo Balls that live in the beautiful World of Goo are curious to explore—but they don't know that they are in a game, or that they are extremely delicious. World of Goo Corporation is contractually obligated to state that everyone is a winner, and is enthusiastic to celebrate everyone's Goo building opportunities equally.

Art Style: CUBELLO (Nintendo, 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Art Style: CUBELLO mixes the strategy and feel of a traditional puzzle game with the precision and reflexes required in a shooter. As each stage begins, various colored cubes form into one large object called a Cubello, which floats and rotates as you play. Launch additional cubes from your magazine and try to connect four or more of the same color, removing them from the Cubello and eventually leaving only its core. Take on the challenge of either Stage or Endless mode and watch what happens when Bonus Time is activated. The straightforward controls and goal ensure that anyone can play, while offering enough depth that even advanced players will find themselves quickly addicted to the unique world of Art Style: CUBELLO.

Tetris Party (Tetris Online, Inc., 1-6 players, Rated E for Everyone, 1,200 Wii Points): Tetris Party is a deceptively simple, totally addictive puzzle game that is sure to keep you and all of your friends and family entertained for hours on end. The WiiWare game features 10 never-before-seen single-player and multiplayer variations of Tetris, including Field Climber, Stage Racer, Shadow and Wii Balance Board-enabled modes (Wii Balance Board accessory sold with Wii Fit). Several of the modes give users the chance to take advantage of the unique point-and-shoot capabilities of the Wii Remote controller. The party doesn't stop there, though. Take the Tetris fun online via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, where you can play multiplayer Tetris against up to five friends at a time. You can also see how your Tetris Party skills stack up against the rest of the world using the global ranking system.

The Incredible Maze (Digital Leisure Inc., 1 player, Rated E for Everyone, 500 Wii Points): Get lost in The Incredible Maze! Simply tilt your Wii Remote controller to navigate a series of exciting and twisted mazes. Entering the maze could not be easier, but finding your way out will require a keen eye and a steady hand. Obstacles and traps are around every corner, so move your ball around the maze without falling off the edge. But watch out, there are lots of surprises in store. You can hunt for gems in a timed challenge, or test your abilities in a race against the clock. The Incredible Maze is also compatible with the Wii Balance Board, so you can really put your weight into it. This is the way in, but you'll have to find your own way out.

I wonder if this will see a stateside release. And how are they getting an RPG under the size limit? I know it's graphically pared down considerably, but still....

That looks pretty cool. It's not pushing WiiWare in the visuals department, but it looks fun.

And this is based off of a mobile phone game, correct? It shouldn't be too much of a problem with the file size. I would like that it be built from the ground up for WiiWare though....

This week's releases for the US (Oct 27, 2008) are:

Strong Bad Episode 3: Baddest of the Bands (http://www.wiiware-world.com/reviews/2008/10/strong_bad_episode_3_baddest_of_the_bands) (Telltale Games, 1 player, Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older - Alcohol Reference, Crude Humor, Mild Cartoon Violence, Mild Suggestive Themes, 1,000 Wii Points): Rock and roll! Hurting for cash, Strong Bad sets out to dominate the “Battle Royale of the Bands.” Can he rule the stage and win the big prize? Or will he be drowned out by the competition? Find out in this high-voltage episode.

Art Style: ROTOHEX (Nintendo, 1-2 players, Rated E for Everyone, 600 Wii Points): Use colored triangular panels to create a vibrant mosaic of stained glass in Art Style: ROTOHEX. As triangles fall from the top of the screen, rotate them to group six panels of the same color and create a matching hexagon, or HEX. Once the HEX has been formed, it will disappear, allowing the existing panels to shift and more panels to fill the playing field. A clear-cut goal and two different styles of intuitive controls allow you to focus solely on the game play-which is vital, as the playing field will be full of panels before you know it. With multiple modes (unlock more as you progress further in SOLO mode), special item panels at your disposal, and the ability to play cooperatively or competitively with a friend, there will always be another HEX to create.

I was listening to one of the major podcasts the other days (1Up?) and they mentioned it was a great co-op experience...to the point that some of the levels are much more manageable as a co-op team because, one can prop up the tower while the other grabs another goo, etc...

I've heard good things. Even the Wii-mote makes a great control device.

Strong Bad is here to show you how it's done in his hand-crafted cinematic masterpiece, Dangeresque 3: The Criminal Projective. You play Dangeresque, a dirty cop in pursuit of a little action and several big sacks of cash. Can our hero stay alive long enough to defeat his arch-nemesis, save the world and get the girl? Looks like he's gonna have to jump.

Target Toss Pro: Bags (Incredible Technologies, 1-16 players, Rated E for Everyone, 700 Wii Points): Target Toss Pro: Bags is a new video game based on beanbag toss, the nation's hottest backyard and tailgate sensation. Bags – or Cornhole, as it's called in some parts of the country – originated in the Midwest in the 1960s and has since become a staple at outdoor social events from coast to coast. Similar to horseshoes, Bags is a deceptively simple yet extremely competitive game where players try to toss beanbags into a hole in a slightly raised platform or "box" for points. Whether at a tailgate party or a summer barbecue, the game has become a social focal point, and the unmistakable thud of bags hitting the box is now a universal party soundtrack.

$9 is a steal. Here's how I figure it. To go to the local minigolf course is probably around $10 per person. If I spend $9 on this game, and play it with the wife and daughter just once, it has paid for itself. Atop that, the game looks great!

In fact, this may be something I send to others as a holiday GIFT through the Wii Shop Channel.

I love mini-golf! I will pick this up...

Have you played the mini-gold on XBL? How is it if you played it?Haven't played it. I typically don't like golf at all, but playing on Wii is a very different story. Playing golf on a controller ends up being a bunch of timed mini-game button presses for power, spin, and all these other variables. For some reason I get no satisfaction from it at all, maybe because it feels completely unrelated to what I do when playing real golf. On the Wii, it feels much more like I am playing real golf. My muscles go through the same motions, and the subtlety is something you feel in your whole body.

Super Meat Boy has been announced for WiiWare. (WiiWare World (http://www.wiiware-world.com/news/2009/01/super_meat_boy_slides_onto_wiiware_later_this_year ))

Are you a fan of small cubes of animated meat?

Do you enjoy the sound of buzz saws?

When you hear the term "wall jump" do you get excited?

Well, what if you woke up to find you were made of a lump of juicy raw meat, your girlfriend was made of band-aids and to top it all off she had been kidnapped by a fetus in a jar wearing a suit and monocle? Would that be totally awesome? or just kinda awesome?

Well I'm hoping you chose totally awesome, because that's basically the premise of Super Meat Boy.

In Super Meat Boy you take the role of a small animated cube of meat on his quest to save his lady love Band-Aid girl from the clutches of the evil Dr. Fetus! Sliding his way through saw mills, salt factories and even hell itself, Meat boy jumps into action in this fast paced and extremely challenging platformer that will "melt your face off".

Super Meat Boy is based off the popular flash game Meat Boy hosted by Newgrounds.com. http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/472826

Super Meat Boy will be completely remade from the ground up for its release on Wiiware™ and will feature over 100+ single player levels, insane boss fights, competitive vs modes, beefy co-op play and a slew of unlockables that are rumored to fill your life with great happiness!

SMB (best abbreviation ever) is being designed by Gish co-creator Edmund McMillen, Tommy Refenes and "Big" Jon McEntee.

We will be documenting Meat Boy's rebirth for Wiiware on our development blog via Supermeatboy.com so feel free to pop in and tell us all your lame ideas we will never use!

Thanks for the support! and keep indie gaming alive!

Cave Story is supposedly close to release, straight from nicalis's blog (http://nicalis.com/blog/2009/01/27/hello/).

Hey, I’m Tiffany, the programmer on Cave Story Wii. Things have been pretty busy for us as we get closer to release, but I wanted to say hello.

As you probably know, over the past few months we’ve been cracking away, trying to bring Cave Story over to the Wii platform. Thankfully to Pixel’s clean work, we’ve been able to do it without too many challenges. During the first few days of porting Cave Story I was able to see the hard work and love that went into making this game. Some of Pixel’s techniques, including the old school approach to sound generation, were really helpful in keeping the file sizes down (very helpful for WiiWare) and making this port a pretty straight forward one.

If you’ve read Tyrone’s post, you probably have figured out that the game is almost completely ported and getting close to done. There are still a few things left to do. One of the more obvious bugs from the initial port was a notable sound bug–you know “bleeding ears” and all–which I am currently working on. We promise to get it right! There were also several graphics bugs which have since been fixed. I am also working to get all of the Wii specifications in place, but that’s all secret stuff.

I am really excited to work alongside Pixel and Tyrone and feel very honored to have a hand in this project. Like you, I can’t wait to see the final result on the WiiWare Channel. I plan to make a couple of updates on Cave Story, so until next time thanks for reading!

Oh I so agree with this. I know Wii Ware isn't for everyone (their loss) but all the complaints about the Wii not having stuff to play? Depends where you are looking...and willing to play. I love the different games that come out for Wii Ware. Everyone talks about XBL but Wii Ware gets the shaft.

In a recent interview (http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/iPhone/feature.asp?c=11282) with Pocketgamer, Luc Bernard reveals three (of four titles) for WiiWare in the future. He also shares some details on the progress of Eternity's Child, and Mecho Wars, a new game announced for WiiWare.

Can you explain the concept behind Mecho Wars?

Well, when Mike Fahey of Kotaku mentioned in his review of Eternity's Child that he wanted to know more about the plot, I thought about a game that would focus on the expanded story and the events prior to Eternity's Child, so that's essentially where development on Mecho Wars began.

Also, an old friend who has been in the industry for years suggested the idea of doing a turn-based strategy title; it seemed like an excellent way to expand the story and also a great fit for the iPhone.

There are 18 different units for the player to choose from, with air units, water-based ones, and multiple ground units.

Also we are currently thinking about adding online multiplayer and offering two versions on the App Store: one free with a small selection of multiplayer maps and the other a paid-for release with the full single-player campaign and all the multiplayer maps.

You've mentioned that you're looking to expand into WiiWare publishing as well. Fans of the service are probably wondering what has happened to the WiiWare version of Eternity's Child - can you give us any information?

We'll be focusing on WiiWare once we get official approval; I've actually just talked to Nintendo about it so it should be very soon.

As for Eternity's Child, I'm in the same boat as you. I just know that Alten8 (the WiiWare publisher) is reworking the game.

I don't talk to them as much now since I have my own business to worry about, so I'll only be able to play Eternity's Child WiiWare once it's out and I'll see how it's turned out then.

I must admit I thought it would be out by now, but it's out of my hands, sadly.

An interview (http://www.wiiblog.net/interview-with-eduardo-the-samurai-toaster-developer-1760/) over at wiiblog with Semnat Studios Co-Founder/Artist, Daniel Coleman on The Eduardo: The Samurai Toaster.

That’s probably a good call, I think for it to be infringement it has to be more than 20% comparable to the original. But I’m not a lawyer so don’t go by that. Anyhow, just a couple of more questions. I was reading on your website/blog about how you decided on how to stylize the grass in your game. Without having to spill too many beans or having to speak tech jargon, can you maybe take us from how art that you create goes from the canvas or paper, into the actual game?

Yeah it’s pretty simple, really. For the assets which I used traditional media for, I would create them on gessoed paper or mylar, etc., and either took a picture of them or, as in most cases, scanned them in. Then I’d use something like photoshop to cut them up however I needed to. Some of the textures, like the grass for level one which I detailed in my blog, was a mix between old textures I created in dog waffle and two different textures done with acrylic inks. I would cut them up on the computer, blend them until I was satisfied with the right combination, and then get them to repeat well. The repeating textures are the most difficult assets to create. They have to look appealing but subtle enough where you don’t easily notice that they’re repeating all over the place. I won’t bore you with further details, but for those that are interesting in hearing more about these processes I’ll detail everything in my blog.

Well, glad to see someone is getting some school credit out of this. My final question; I’ve been reading on your site and through other interviews about the development process, and the time it took to create this game. Its been five years from beginning of the idea to the end, if I’m not mistaken. What have been the hardest parts of seeing a game through for that long period of time? And what would your advice be to other aspiring game developers just getting into it?

Yeah a few years working on prototypes of Eduardo, just over one year for the Wii game. It’s been a real learning experience this whole time, every little detail about game design. We made many prototypes because we learned so much and would realize that we could do something much better if we started over with a new engine and revised gameplay mechanics. We went through that process a number of times. The challenge keeps it from being boring, and that time gave me a chance to learn how create better art. The hardest part has definitely been issues with resources. Not being able to work on the game as our only job but still having to put full-time hours into it. It’s a difficult thing to sustain for such a long period of time.

We won’t find out until Eduardo is released if this method worked out for us so I don’t know if my advice will be of any help to aspiring designers. But perhaps I could say learn from your mistakes, let people outside of your development team take a look at your work and encourage honest feedback. Be critical of your work and make sure you’re doing something you’re passionate about. I can’t imagine working on this if we didn’t love the game we were making, or earlier on, the game we were trying to make. And Learn to embrace criticism, that’s very important. If someone takes the time out to play your game and offers criticism, appreciate that and don’t allow your ego to get bruised. Unless you’re a game design genius you’re going to make mistakes and plenty of them, but you can always learn from them and improve your skills.

A new press release and trailer for Swords & Soldiers. (WiiWare World (http://www.wiiware-world.com/news/2009/02/more_details_about_swords_and_soldiers))

UTRECHT, The Netherlands – February 18, 2009 – Ronimo Games, best known as the development team behind the original version of De Blob, today announced new details surrounding its debut title for WiiWare, Swords & Soldiers. New features such as historical inaccuracy (yes we said that), uncompromising style, some random stuff, and Morefun™ have been added to the game.

“WiiWare is the perfect platform for a Ronimo game, which we hope becomes something people expect to be unique in style, and most importantly, really fun,” said Fabian Akker, president of Romino Games. “We want to make games that the entire family can play, wants to play, and actually plays. Swords & Soldiers is one of those game that we hope really takes off and finds its audience.”

About Swords & Soldiers

Swords & Soldiers is the first side-scrolling strategy game on the Wii, allowing for accessible and deep gameplay, a clear overview of the battlefield, and most importantly, for our artists to show off their beard-drawing skills. Players can choose from three powerful and unique factions as they let loose their armies and cast awesome spells to destroy the enemies’ castle. Swords & Soldiers is developed and published by Ronimo games and features:

-Strategic Depth - Even though dishing out commands is easy as pie, that doesn't mean you can just click buttons and expect to walk all over the enemy. Choosing the right guy for the job and zapping the proper enemy at the right time is what this game is all about. So put on your thinking cap and get to strategizin'.

-Style - Thinking up new strategies is hard. But luckily you won't have to look at some wooden blocks or plastic tokens while doing it. A fresh style, full of character greets you when playing Swords & Soldiers. You'll traverse lush jungles and sun-soaked deserts while you humiliate your opponents.

-Modes Galore - We tried our best to squeeze every last drop of gameplay from our mechanics in all kinds of modes. To start you out, we have 10 level campaigns for each of the three factions. These start out easy to teach you the basics, but they build up to some seriously epic final conflicts. Then there are the skirmish modes, in which you can crush human or AI in customizable battles. And, to top it all off, there are three distinct challenge modes which twist specific parts of the gameplay into crazy high-score based time devourers.

-Historical Inaccuracy - We've done plenty of research into the historic background of the three factions. And then we threw all of it out of the window, but made up some entertaining bits which seemed sort of more fun. Finally, we added some other totally irrelevant funny bits about hot sauce and bolted them on for maximum absurdity.

-Easy Wiimote Controls - Everything in Swords & Soldiers is done using the pointer functionality of the innovative Wii Remote. Just click on the icons at the top to select the unit or spell you want to use against your enemies. In fact, playing Swords & Soldiers only requires one hand. So that leaves the other hand free for petting your cat while laughing maniacally.

-Morefun™ - Created in a lab by Dutch researchers, Morefun™ is Ronimo’s patent pending version of fun that makes games interesting and enjoyable to play. Imagine playing a game, that at the same time is actually fun. Powerful stuff.

-Achievements - Yes.

Some upcoming WiiWare titles. (WiiWare World (http://www.wiiware-world.com/news/2009/02/night_game_new_wiiware_release_from_nicalis))

-Night Game, developed and published by Nicalis: Exclusively for WiiWare, Night Game (working title) is part action game and part puzzler. It invites players into a beautifully atmospheric world, where they must use real physics to maneuver a mysterious, glowing sphere through vastly different locales. Night Game pushes the boundaries of design with its unique art style, and professionally produced music score. This title is a 2009 Independent Games Festival Seumas McNally Award nominee and from the same developers responsible for Cave Story on Wii.

-BIT.TRIP BEAT, developed by Gaijin Games and published by Aksys Games: BIT.TRIP BEAT is what you get when you mix classic video gaming with modern gaming sensibilities. What may seem like a simple “paddle” game turns into a psychedelic trip down memory lane which has you hitting “beats” in rhythm to Chiptune style music. While the game can be difficult, if you crank up the tunes and get in the zone, you’ll have a great time. Performing perfectly isn’t required to experience all the game’s content, but the extra challenge will keep score-hunters coming back in search of each level’s elusive “PERFECT” score.

-Eduardo the Samurai Toaster, developed and published by Semnat Studios LLC: Fight your way through 13 diverse locations on your own or with up to three friends in this frenetic and stylish side-scrolling action game. Play as Eduardo and his fellow toaster buddies as you fire an assortment of pastries at all kinds of dastardly food products. Hop onto laser-mounted scooters and fly across the screen in rocket packs, and learn to cooperate with your teammates or simply annoy each other in an awesomely fun way by throwing each other around the screen. The choice is up to you.

-Swords & Soldiers, developed and published by Ronimo Games: Swords & Soldiers is a side-scrolling real-time strategy game, in which three distinct factions battle for the powers of the gods. The goal is to destroy the enemies’ castle on the other end of the level, while protecting your own. This can be done by training powerful units or casting devastating spells. The game will feature a single-player campaign and a competitive split-screen multiplayer mode as well as several other game modes.

A press release for Hudson's upcoming title, Water Warfare. (GoNintendo (http://gonintendo.com/?p=76591))

San Mateo, Calif. – March 23, 2009 – Wii™ owners will have a new way to beat the heat this summer as Hudson Entertainment splashes up Water Warfare, a “first person soaker” videogame, exclusively downloadable for WiiWare™. The family-friendly “soaker” is set to be published by Hudson Entertainment, the North and South American publishing arm of HUDSON SOFT. The game has been rated E10+ for Everybody 10+ by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB).

“Water Warfare is the perfect summer videogame to beat the heat.” said Sabine Duvall, Vice President of Product Development at Hudson Entertainment. “It’s easy to download and play this ‘first person soaker’ – just get your squirt gun ready and go for it!”

In Water Warfare, players go head to head or team up as they run around playgrounds and beaches to drench each other with squirt guns. They’ll be able to protect themselves with, what else, raincoats, towels and more. There are other items, like the umbrella, which can attack and defend at the same time! With different types of squirt guns, pick-up items, offline and eight player online multiplayer, there’s tons of squirt gun fun to be had. Throughout the game, players use the Nunchuk™ to control movement, aim using the Wii Remote™, and can load up on different squirt guns, such as shotguns and rocket launchers, to soak their opponents.

Do you play as an evil character who designs towers to slaughter adventurers?

This is what I've been able to dig up: (WiiWare World (http://www.wiiware-world.com/news/2009/03/square_enix_announces_two_new_final_fantasy_wiiwar e_titles))

FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES: My Life as a Darklord puts players in the highly fashionable shoes of the Darklord's daughter, a malevolent little Miss, charged with dispatching intruding do-gooders by strategically placing traps and monsters around the tower she calls home.

Players will need to get their hands on ever more diabolical traps and abominable monsters to stop those pesky adventurers from making it to the Dark Crystal at the top of the tower. Be warned, though – with heroes of all the races and job classes from the FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES series storming the Darklord's lair in real time, traps and minions will count for nothing unless deployed like a true evil genius. Anything less and the Darklord's beloved home will be reduced to rubble!

Japan's releases for this week are: (WiiWare World (http://www.wiiware-world.com/news/2009/03/surprise_japanese_wiiware_released_today))

-Picture Book asoberu sugoroku tobida! --- Looks to be some kind of board or card game with a 3D representation and 2D pieces that look like cut-outs.

-Kimi to Boku to Rittai (You, Me and Shape) -- This looks like a sort of puzzle game where you're trying to place people on structures made of cubes in pairs and position them so the structure stays balanced and they don't fall off. Sounds like something that could be translated easily enough for other territories and it's from Nintendo so there's a chance this could appear overseas.

Both titles are 1,000 Wii Points.

As well as two additional titles (http://www.wiiware-world.com/news/2009/03/japanese_releases_31_march_2009):

-Let's Hitchhike from Nippon: 1,000 points

-Atsui 12 Furi Furi Party! from Tecmo: 500 points

Press release for Crystal Defenders R1/R2. (GoNintendo (http://gonintendo.com/?p=77829))

London (3rd April 2009) – Square Enix Ltd., the publisher of Square Enix® interactive entertainment products in Europe and other PAL territories, today announces the release of two downloadable titles for WiiWare™. The first of these defensive simulation games, CRYSTAL DEFENDERS™ R1 will be available for download in April, while a release date for CRYSTAL DEFENDERS™ R2 will be announced at a later stage.

Featuring jobs and locations from the popular FINAL FANTASY TACTICS® series, CRYSTAL DEFENDERS requires players to strategically deploy units to fend off encroaching enemy hordes and prevent them from stealing their party’s crystals.

The WiiWare version includes several improvements to the interface and a new design optimized for consoles. A worldwide ranking system allows players to upload their scores to leaderboards and see how they stack up against other players around the globe. These and other new features are sure to increase excitement and enhance replayability.

John Yamamoto, president and chief executive officer of Square Enix Ltd. comments, “The release of these two CRYSTAL DEFENDERS titles on WiiWare demonstrates Square Enix’s commitment to providing new downloadable content, meeting the needs of its customers. CRYSTAL DEFENDERS combines easy pick-up and play mechanics, great depth and an addictive quality that make it ideal for the platform. I hope that many people experience and enjoy it.”

About CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R1

Story
In a land ruled by might and magick, peace is ensured by the benevolent power of the crystals. When a young moogle charged with guarding these crystals learns of an evil presence gathering on the horizon, he calls upon heroes from the far corners of the realm to join forces and stand against this new threat.

Wielders of blade and bow, keepers of arts arcane, unite! As darkness draws nigh, only you can protect the light that binds us. The fate of Ivalice lies in the hands of…the Crystal Defenders!

Features
CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R1 is a defensive simulation game in which players deploy characters from the FINAL FANTASY TACTICS® series onto a variety of different maps to battle wave after wave of encroaching monsters. The first game in the series, Crystal Guardians, was released in Japan for mobile phones in January 2008. In December of the same year, iPhone 3G, iPod touch and iPod versions were released under the new name, CRYSTAL DEFENDERS. To date, the total number of downloads for the series have reached over 800,000.

CRYSTAL DEFENDERS R1 is simple and easy to learn – monsters will enter an area and march through it until they are defeated or reach an exit, at which time they will steal one or more crystals. It is up to the player to decide – by pausing the action at crucial moments – when and where to deploy various jobs such as Black Mages or Soldiers that will attempt to defend the party’s crystals. Factors such as map terrain, monster strengths and weaknesses, job attributes, and more will play a crucial role in determining what steps a player should take.

Gamelife has a short piece on Swords and Soldiers (http://blog.wired.com/games/2009/04/preview-swords.html)
Swords and Soldiers follows your typical real-time strategy rules. Each race has four combat units, and a resource gatherer who will mine the gold you need to buy troops. Your soldiers will march towards the enemy on their own, so the bulk of the strategic planning is pretty much centered around launching the right units at the right time.

Consider the Viking Frost Hammer. This wee warrior is armed with a massive mallet, and his slow, thunderous blow will cause nearby enemies to flinch. Stunned enemies will make the perfect targets for swarms of Axe Throwers, who work better in packs, at a distance.

While the Vikings rely on brute force, the Aztecs require a bit of ingenuity. Their primary unit is the Jaguar Warrior, who lacks armor, but is capable of leaping towards enemies. His attacks are perfect for closing the distance between vulnerable ranged attackers, slaying them for the Aztec Necromancer who raises corpses to create skeleton warriors. Undead soldiers are invulnerable, but will crumble to dust after a short while.

Spells play an important role in combat, especially since you can't control your units directly. Players have a mana pool that regenerates over time, and spells are directed on to the battlefield by pointing at a target with the Wiimote.

The Viking's Rage spell will send a single unit charging across the screen in a crazed frenzy, sweeping up any comrades they encounter into a psychotic cloud of destruction. Once their fervor has run dry, the Viking Heal spell will call down heavenly light from Valhalla to get your troops back into shape.

On the Aztec side of things, a well timed Poison Bomb will cripple groups of enemies and sap their health -- perfect for countering swarms of ranged invaders. If those Viking thugs survive, you can always Sacrifice your own units to gain a bit more mana, and try again, or use the Mind Control spell to sow a bit of confusion into the battle.

Sadly there is only local multiplayer, as the dev team is so small. But that negative aside, I am really looking forward to this title.

That looks really clever. It's a neat mapping of the RTS concept into two dimensions and looks like it retains much of the tactical subtlety of the RTS without being overwhelming. Though endgame balancing could be problematic.

A leakybattery interview (http://leakybattery.wordpress.com/2009/04/03/interview-with-daniel-coleman/) with Daniel Coleman on Eduardo the Samurai Toaster.

BA: How far along is the development of Eduardo the Samurai Toaster?

Daniel Coleman: We’ve finished the game, and are awaiting Nintendo to go through their cert-sorta process.

BA: Oh great. Do you have a rough estimate of how long it will take?

Daniel Coleman: No clue! I suppose the game could see release as early as this month, but it could be May; maybe even June, but hopefully not.

BA: So do you think you can reveal how big Eduardo is?

Daniel Coleman: It uses every bit of space we could use. 40MB is not a lot to work with, so you have to be careful with how you create the artwork. If I had it my way I’d draw entire levels as single larger drawings, layers of drawings. But with the size limitations you have to be clever and use repeating textures and assets. I think we did a good job of that. I saved half of the art space for the final level (which is split up into four parts). I wanted it to be something really special.

BA: Wow that’s good to hear for people who have a bunch of games already installed on their Wii. Do you think you can release a price yet?

Daniel Coleman: We have a price point we’d like to release Eduardo at, but Nintendo has final say and we don’t know what it is yet.
