I still need to play the second one. I loved the first. Is that a playable Bowser I spy in the middle shot? ...Wait a minute, that's Mario and Luigi inside his small intestine!

So awesome.
The first two M&L games were just great. There was a lot of humor, I loved the character animations (especially the way Mario and Luigi dance during fights), the battle system always keeps you doing something, etc. Just great games overall.

They are worth starting now, yes. Classic Nintendo games. I need to track down the second one though...not sure how easy they are to find...or the real issue, how much am I going to pay...

What I want developers to take away from the Mario RPG series is that story is more than canned dialog in a cutscene.
The game has a very funny story, without a word spoken.

Not sure which one he was referring to, but so far there's been: Super Mario RPG, on the SNES and now the VC; Paper Mario, on the N64 and also the VC; Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, on the GBA (this is my favorite of them all); Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door, on the GC; Mario and Luigi 2: Partners in Time, on the DS; and finally Super Paper Mario on the Wii. Luckily the rarer ones are now on the Virtual Console.

When I played it I put every single stat point into Stache, just because the game refused to explain what it did :p
I thought the first game was hilarious, personally. The point when Mario and Luigi get their elemental superpowers was a bit bland to me, but everything else was just so funny and had a creative storyline. Also I hadn't played a Mario RPG before so the fighting mechanics to me were quite novel and a lot of fun.

I haven't played my DS much lately, but this game would definitely make me pick it up again. The original remains one of my favorite handheld games ever. It was genuinely funny in a way few games manage, and had a great combat system. The second was a bit of a disappointment, mostly because it was a lot shorter and more linear than the first. There was no real sense of exploration, you were shuttled from one location to the next.
I hope the third game ends up more like the first. I really like Bowser taking a much larger, more playable role. He should prove to be a much more interesting secondary combat group than the baby-bros were in the second. The flaming goomba pile attack in the screenshots looks great. The "Inner Space" storyline where you control both Bowser and the swallowed Mario Bros is pretty unique, though I hope the entire game isn't set up that way.

Ah the memories! For me, these handheld Mario RPGs are actually more in flavor with it than the Paper Mario series.

Get it. It's an Advance game so I imagine fairly cheap if you do find a used copy. It is far superior to Partners in Time in absolutely every way.

Augh, I still need to beat the first one. I kept getting lost in a box maze where you can't see your path. Was it in a winery? I can't remember....
I own the 2nd one, but never got that into it. Was I stupid for handing it over to the wife before I even got into it?

Yeah. That's not all that far into the game if I recall correctly. I think you still have roughly 1/3 to 1/2 of the game to go. Get on it!

A hands-on by Cubed3 (http://www.cubed3.com/preview/277/).
There is somewhat of a crisis in the Mushroom Kingdom - everyone is growing exceedingly huge and rolling around. Unsure exactly what is going on, Princess Peach decides to hold an emergency meeting, in which the Italian plumbing duo of Mario and Luigi are called into attendance. As it happens, a creature called 'Yellow Star' announces it has uncovered the cause of what is being deemed as 'Metakoro Disease', but before more can be said or done on the matter, the scene changes and players are shown Bowser being caught unawares and fed what he believes to be a 'Lucky Mushroom'. It, in fact, turns out to be nothing more than an elaborate trap crafted by Fawful (the foe from past Mario & Luigi outings) in an effort to control the King of the Koopas. Fawful consequently manipulates the giant beast, making him head to Peach's castle and suck everyone and everything right up, the Mario brothers included. This starts the adventure off with Bowser appearing on his lonesome on the top screen, whilst Mario and Luigi are relegated to the inner parts of Bowser's body, shown on the touch-screen.
There are some definite new touches of class, even early on in the experience. For example, at one point Bowser must munch his way through a massive carrot, and the only way to get more down his humongous throat is for Mario and Luigi to help him digest the grub as quickly as possible. To carry out the task, players must tap on the carrot segments to continuously break them down into smaller and smaller pieces, before they eventually disappear. Another especially ingenious addition is a musical timing element that plays exactly like something lifted from Nintendo's own Rhythm Heaven. Bowser must pull a large carrot out of the ground (yes, the same carrot he munches on a short while later), but his muscles need a little encouragement to work to their highest capacity. Therefore, sparks are sent flying out of the muscle inside his body, red ones heading towards Mario, blue ones at Luigi, each time being spurted out in small bursts with different rhythmic timing. The player must then tap the appropriate buttons to mimic that rhythm, resulting in the brothers hitting the energy sparks back into the muscle, thus enlarging it and making Bowser stronger.
