View Full Version : Donation Drive for fits' PS3

Would anyone else be willing to donate to this cause? If so, I definitely think we should get it organized! After all the hard work he did for us all at Evil Avatar (and considering he never received any reimbursement for it), I think he deserves it. (And maybe we can even get it done in time for Little Big Planet.)
So, what do you guys think? :)

Man, where were you guys when I was stockpiling systems in order to review over all platforms? :D
Don't worry, I took them as business expenses for the other site I write for that I get a nominal fee for.

I'm poor right now, too. But Xerxes brought up the point that if everyone donated $1, we'd be able to cover a big chunk of the cost.

I think it's a great idea and considering how he will probably be doing reviews like he did on EvAv I would think owning a PS3 would be a work related necessity(and a write off).

So, would we be able to declare this on our taxes then? As a charitable expense, or a work related expense?

I meant a write off for him, I don't think we could write it off unless CoG set up some kind of official charity drive and I have no clue how that is done.
So, um, how do we do this?!
Either one of the mods have to OK it and set something up or Fit's needs to supply us with an email address that is tied to his pay pal account.

Dunno. I think we'll have to do some sort of PayPal thing. For the moment, I'm off to bed but I'll check back tomorrow.
We're gonna do this, though. I feel the need to donate money to the site, even if it's in a roundabout way. And fits is about as roundabout as you can get!

While I really appreciate the sentiment, this is a tough one for me. I mean, this site isn't just about one person, plus there are literally hundreds of other 'causes' more worthy of your time and money (your local animal shelter, for example, or rape crisis center).

I'm sure we can handle both if need be and given the way things have gone for you these past couple years I think you need this (not necessarily the PS3 itself but just something good and uplifting, the PS3 is just a bonus) just as much as you deserve this. I'm pretty sure we have enough members willing to donate so individually it won't be a big deal at all but together (insert cheesy motivational saying here.)

Wait... I'm having one of those headaches with pictures...
...so here's the thing: There's some pretty crazy generous people around here, they just need to be pointed in the right direction; whether it be Childsplay, Gunny needs electricity, fits needs a PS3, etc.
As pointed out above, there is no end of good causes that could do with some cash, many of them small and largely unseen (unlike your Amnesties or IFAW or what have you.)
So here's what I'm thinking: a decent lump-sum to one of these could make a real difference, rather than a couple of dollars to many, so perhaps we should start a "Good Cause of the MonthTM". Essentially what happens is that during the month people find a little known worthy cause (like the type listed above) that desperately needs some cash then one (or a few) are decided on and then a donation drive is held at the end/beginning of the month and the total lump sum is sent on. The unfortunate part will be the ones that aren't chosen, but it will still be a net increase in good.
Thoughts? Feelings? Criticisms? Suggestions? Anyone?
For the first mini-drive I nominate buy fits a PS3 whether he likes it or not. Rini, this is your fault so you're responsible. Set up a Paypal account that we can send money to, then you use the money to buy him one online that's sent to his house so that he has no say in the matter. Someone must have his address (if you don't.) Any over-flow you can just feed into childsplay or hookers and blow.

Actually, I think that's a fantastic idea. If it's a monthly thing, I probably wouldn't be able to donate very much at a time though. Maybe bi-monthly? Or maybe I'm the only one who feels that way. If that's the case, then ignore the whole "bi-monthly" thing.

As I said, send me the money, and I will take care of it. It's a simple matter of people using an email I specify (preferably in a non-extradition country, or one that has lax banking laws), they send the moneys, and I do something with that money.

This sounds like a great idea. My work matches my donations to charities up to a few grand each year, so I wonder if that would still work with them....let's do it!
Also I still want to donate 10 bucks to James's (James'? Jamess' Christ I hate grammer) PS3 fund.

Err... well I'm not massively up to speed on the receiving end of Paypal either, but this (https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_email-payments-overview-outside) might be what you need. Maybe...
If anyone with experience in this wants to chime in, now would be a good time.
Then I guess you need his address. Again, if anyone has info on this feel free to PM Rini:D. Or if you can't get his address, but can obtain his phone number, you could try cross-referencing with the white pages (http://www.whitepages.com/search/Replay?search_id=40031341906628765264&form_mode=opt_a&lower=1&view=).
Then when you have the money, I guess you buy one (http://www.amazon.com/Playstation-3-80GB/dp/B001COU9I6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1223022185&sr=1-3) and put his address as the delivery address.
I would totally do it, but retailers won't accept an Australian credit Card with a US delivery address. Yes, that's very plausible. They won't suspect a thing...

Hey, some of us are already ass-deep in charitable contributing. :p So I wouldn't probably be able to do the monthly or bi-monthly thing, but for bootsie I'm down.
As far as receiving - the only thing you have to cope with are the limits of how much money you can draw off paypal per month (I can't remember, might be $500?) Other than that, just post up the paypal, or if you feel like it you can create a new email with a more subjective name like PS3ForBootsy@gmail and attach it as a secondary email, then you're good to go.

Where's Bap and his widget, that made it easy to reach a goal last time.
Do we need to pitch in a bit over the PS3 price so we can buy him a game or some cables too?

I'd have to look, but I believe if you have a premier account (the only way you can accept credit card money I think) there is no limit to what you can take out of Paypal in a month.
UPDATE: yeah, you just have to verify your bank account or credit card to lift the limit.

I think I had more money that wasn't immediately "spoken for" when I was a single student, than now that we're trying to raise a family. Which is why two charities only got donations of my time through this past summer. :o

I think Bap or someone would need to make a custom page on the site. If I had to guess, the forum software parses the code you put into a post and cleans out embedded stuff. That's why we have special forum tags for youtube and even your basic bold, italics, etc. Probably to keep people from hijacking a site with evil widgets.

I know why the widget won't work here. I think the only forum that has HTML coding allowed in it is the Features one. You kind of want to stay away from HTML coding in posts in vBulleting because it can screw up the database pretty badly from what I've heard.
I know bap is very busy this weekend with real-life stuff. I could see if I as an Administrator can post an HTML code here. Give me a few minutes, have to put laundry in the dryer and then I'll try it.

Actually, it's quite a significant security hazard, as well. I still remember pleading for months to get html turned off the Halo3 sub-board. Never did happen, you bastiches. *shakes fist*

Yep, no workie. I don't even know if we'll use HTML in the Features section. At EvAv the very top of a review was in HTML.
I'd rather not put this on the front page. Maybe James can decide a better place and we temporarily allow what we need to in order to show it.

If there was a way to set it up as a Paypal donation thing, I didn't know how. ChipIn just kind of asked me for my Paypal e-mail address, and I filled it in. Again, sorry if it caused an inconvenience!

Nice work Rini and Fox. I woke up this morning to discover my bank account is having some sort of catatonic episode. So I can't donate just yet, but I will be trying real hard to get this sorted so I can pay my rent and (more importantly) internet bill.
What really sucks is that it's not even a bank, but a mutual organisation. They aren't meant to screw over their customers.
As for cause-of-the-month, I figured childsplay would kind of be the first (after this dry run) but I thought I'd put the idea out there because I'm pretty good at forgetting things.
You're probably right. I just don't want people to think I'm, you know, pocketing any excess cash. Maybe I should just not donate with the Widget and instead cover the tax and shipping if it's going to be almost that much. That way, I won't have to make a new Widget. :p
Well if you were upfront that excess would go to Rini's Bananas and Blow fund, I'm sure no one would have minded.
Plus, rinichan will know my true first name now!

It most certainly is. Being born (and still residing) in Manchester naturally precludes any other. ;) Yep, exciting times indeed.

Of course, the fact you were actually BORN in and RESIDE in Manchester means you would never support Man Utd.
So what's your prediction for the season? Top six? Mid-table mediocrity? Bottom half? Relegation contenders?
I'd go with finishing in eight place. It will be interesting to see what happens when the transfer window opens in January.

Well, we are now the richest club in the world and may well soon be stuffed with Galacticos. BUT! We'll always still be Manchester City which means we'll still end up getting knocked out of cups by Brighton.
I reckon top half but not top six. Comfortable for most, but perhaps not Mark Hughes and his ambitious boss.
Exciting! How often are you checking it? (I know when I am really excited about a package, I have a bad and disappointing habit of just sitting there and refreshing the tracking page.)

Woot sent me something via their "awesome" Smartpost. The tracking number tracked through FedEx, and they usually make some kind of sense.
It went from their place to Denver (I live less than an hour away, you see) to WEST VIRGINIA to Denver to Fort Collins to the USPS.
What the hell?

Ever try using tracking for USPS? Absolutely worthless; stuff that's already arrived still reads as at the warehouse. Leave it to the government to offer a service and then make it as craptastic as possible!

All of you assholes living in Denver.... GRRR...
My sister lives in Loveland. I love it out there so much. Totally have to arrange to meet some of you guys (especially since I blew it at PAX) next time I'm out that way, which should be sometime soon.
As for package tracking, my favorite are the ones from my friend in Japan. From Tokyo to Chicago overnight, then 3 days from the Airport, a half hour away, to my door.

I am about 200 yards outside of Loveland as I type this. You're welcome to hang out in our state any time you want. :D

I promise to do something in return...not sure what that would be though. :p

Of course you do! Actually, we would all share top billing (kinda like what the makers of The Towering Inferno did with Steve McQueen and Paul Newman on the one-sheet for the movie).

It could be like House of Flying Daggers (since we'd all be sharing a house, I guess?). You could be Andy Lau, Gnomey could be Zhang Ziyi, and I could be Takeshi Kaneshiro, and you and I could have an epic duel over Gnomey's heart. It'd be awesome.

ARSE! ARSE! ARSE!
UPS: "I'm sorry, Mr. Young, but you won't be able to pick it up from the depot because it's still on the truck."
Me: "So could I go pick it up when it's unloaded from the truck?"
UPS: "I'm sorry, Mr. Young, but it won't be unloaded from the truck until it reaches its destination. Oh wait, it's scheduled for delivery Monday. Just so you know, Mr. Young, it may not be delivered Monday due to the national holiday."
Me: "Wait. Does that mean that my package will be sitting in the back of a truck at the depot all weekend when there's nobody working at the depot?"
UPS: "Yes, but I can assure you that the depots are secure."
Me: "So if I'm hearing you right - my package is currently in the back of a UPS truck at a depot I can almost see from my window, nobody is working at the depot this weekend, and the package may or may not arrive on schedule due to the holiday backlog? Is that correct?"
UPS: "Yes, Mr. Young, that is correct. Is there anything else I can assist you with?"
Me: "I don't know where to begin..."
UPS: [interrupting] "Have a good weekend, and a great holiday."

USPS is worse, trust me.
They cost me 500$ this month because their tracking is useless.
Fitty: That sucks.
I can't believe I've missed this thread until now. If you're interested in MGS4 or Resistance, let me know. They just sit here collecting dust. Either are available for an extended loan.

Mightbe, i heart you. USPS does have the shittiest tracking in the world. And they are so far the only people to lose anything I've ever ordered online. I remember one time I got the package but tracking said it was still at place of origin.

What holiday is monday?
"Wipe out the natives with war, disease, famine, and liquor" day.
Otherwise known as "He wasn't actually the first European to visit the New World because that was Leif Eriksson" day.
Or "Beaten to the New World by about 500 years" day.

Goddamnit. I never realized it was that bad. I asked for something to be shipped via USPS instead of UPS, too. Oh, well. I'm sure it'll get here anyway. No biggie.
