Opera just locked up on me twice in the last ten minutes.
When the hell is that damn Flash ad going to get fixed? And why do we even need them in the first place if they're going to bring problems like this?
Since that GoGamer ad has been added, Opera has been consistently locking up on my while loading pages on this site, and only this site. Google Chrome, on the rare occasions I get to use my own computer anymore, gives me the same crash, with the additional message informing me that the Shockwave Flash plugin has hung and asking me if I want to kill it, then locks the fuck up completely regardless of what I click.
I know from some of the comments in the ads thread that I am not the only one having issues with this, and yet, not a one of the staff has so much as acknowledged this issue. No comment, no response, no fix, nothing.
When is something going to be done about this? I'm getting a little tired of every tenth thread or trip to the User CP crashing my entire browser with all tabs.

Not sure what the problem is, I keep the site open pretty much all die in Chrome with no problems.
So, yeah...nothing is going to be "done" about this for now because the problem seems to be very isolated.

If you want, use Firefox and get adblock plus on it. You could complete disable the ad.

I can't use Firefox on this box, because this one is hooked to an ancient SDTV, and so I'm stuck with a downscaled 800x600. I have to have Opera's Zoom and Fit to Width functions to really be able to browse practically on this machine.
Opera has a built in manual adblocker, but unfortunately, it blocks by address/folder, and the flash ad is hosted from the same folder as all the other pictures, which means I can't even block it, or it breaks all the other images on the page as well.

What a stupid thing to make a thread and bitch about. Clearly no one has a problem with the ad here, both on it being helpful towards the site revenue wise and the fact that is locks nothing up.
Learn to use a PC or quit bitching man... And get into the Christmas spirit for fucks sakes. :)

Weird, I use firefox on my HTPC on and SDTV. I don't do a lot of heavy reading but my desktop lets me set the rez to 1024x768 I believe. It's just barely legible. In fact the wife can't even see it. I have to read everything. After the holidays I may pick up a little HDTV for the bedroom but that's for another thread.

I'm guessing right there is your problem. Opera using zoom and fit functions are probably causing things to go haywire.
In all seriousness, if we can get a .gif versiion of the ad I'm sure we'd swap it.

I have the exact same problem with Chrome. I'm back to using Firefox for now as a result.

The flash ad screws my Chrome browser, too. I've had to switch back to Firefox because it's seriously annoying.

I find flash getting more flaky with every release. As a former Flash developer, I can't believe how poor the situation has gotten.

Oh NO! there are 4 of you, we better change everything to fit your needs.
I'm sorry you are having issues but it's not CoGs fault you have to use a crappy PC or monitor. Also, Firefox has a zoom feature.

I'll point out again that this isn't the only box I have this problem on, though it is the worst. Chrome gives me the same issue on my gaming box downstairs, and it's not using any of the zoom or fit features at all. It doesn't even have them, or I'd be using it upstairs too. :P

So I've made a point of browsing the site with Firefox, Opera, Chrome and IE (6.0 and upwards). As yet, I've experienced no problems at all. It sucks that a minority of people are having problems with it... I'll check with GoGamer and see if there's any other format for the ads.

Hey Mags... So I popped in my time machine and took a gander at CoG just to make sure you weren't telling fibs. Well, you are and you aren't. You are in control, but only of the shadow CoG (the 'resistance,' if you will). The Mighty Thor is the one in control of the main CoG. He apparently got fed up with petty bickering and descended upon us weilding his Ban Hammer like it was going out of style.

The jaw-dropping beauty of Thor's Mighty Hammer is a sight to behold. It instills terror (and a little arousal) in all who bear witness.
I formed the resistance soon after Thor descended upon us. We shall overcome!

Man that sucks. I have been lucky to not have the issue but I love the COG and would not be a happy camper if my OPERA rig did that.
Opera user here, never had a problem, though flash in general is a ressource hog. I tend to keep it off till it's needed for a video or something. I customize the interface so the disable javascript and plugins buttons are on every window next to the address bar. Annoying ads are 2 clicks away (disable+reload).

Opera has a built in manual adblocker, but unfortunately, it blocks by address/folder, and the flash ad is hosted from the same folder as all the other pictures, which means I can't even block it, or it breaks all the other images on the page as well.
When blocking content in Opera with the "Right Click > Block Content" mode, you should be able to hold shift while clicking on page elements to specify that you want to block a specific ad (rather than an entire directory). I don't normally bother blocking ads, but things seem to be going smoothly around here for me since I've blocked this one. The site was crashing rather often there for a while.
Using v9.52 here, by the way, if that ends up being relevant.

Thanks for the tip, I was not aware of that trick. It worked just fine, now the crashing should stop.

srsly? Do I need to go try Opera again? Last time I did I just found myself wanting FF.
The beta of Opera 10 (which i'm using to post this) is remarkably less RAM intensive than Opera 9 and FF3. Still had the screwed up flash ad though, really odd to see an ad for Lich King or GoGamer halfway down the page.
Oh, and there's a really fucked up bug where it treats a temp file as a URL and launches loads of tabs because the "/" in the pathname means "New Tab"
Still, it's a lot better than Opera 9.
