Sony and Konami have announced that the classic PS1 RPG Suikoden is now available on the Playstation Network.
For the low, low cost of $5.99 you too can indulge in the first outing of the 108 stars of destiny as they try to secure the True Rune.
With the future of the Scarlet Moon Empire at stake, players seek out the Stars of Destiny to aid them in overthrowing the corrupt government. The head of the Liberation Army, players can also gather up to 108 companions to join them in battles as they call the shots in large-scale warfare. Suikoden offers variation in combat with the ability to battle groups of enemies with a team of six characters, defeat foes in one-on-one duels, or control the battlefield during major conflicts as the Liberation army wages war.

This is awesome. I am hoping they put the rest of the series to be downloaded too. Now Atlus...how about Persona 1 & 2 on PSN? Please...pretty please...

Ah, Suikoden... AKA recreate Johan's family and take them into battle!
I still wish I had waited the 2 days and not bothered wasting my money on Castlevania Chronicles and grabbed this instead. Grr..

Got this for Xmas the year it came out. I was a devout follower of videogame mags back then, and loved my JRPGs no matter if I didn't know WTF the title meant.
Great game, this is a damn steal. And one of the worst covers ever. :)

That's some fucked up boxart right there indeed. Jeez, looks like some edutainment stuff from the snes days.

You know you want to. It's only $7. How can you pass up a classic JRPG :D

It does smack of "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?," doesn't it?
I absolutely adored Suikoden 1 and I introduced it to a couple of my friends when it came out. For both of them, I believe it was the first non-Final Fantasy rpg they ever played and they loved it as well. Aside from the cool types of battle systems (1 on 1, party, and army), another great thing about the game is that I seem to recall the length was not too intimidating (but I could be wrong, I was in Highschool, which meant I had more freetime).
However, my one true non-Final Fantasy Playstation love affair will always be Wild Arms. I fucking adored that game and its anime meets American Old west aesthetic.

Such a classic. Recruitable bosses, build-a-base, character-specific team up combos and the dice game...dear lord the hours I spent chucking dice into a tiny bowl for cash to upgrade weapons.
Anyone who has never played the original owes it to themselves to check out what I consider to still be one of the greatest RPGs of all time.
Then go play Suikoden 2 as well. ;)

I didn't play Suikoden 1 back in the day (started playing from 2 and upwards) but I have to say I was like "wha?" a few moments ago :D

Suikoden is a classic; I highly recommend it, even with the bizzaro box art.

Wow, now that you've pointed it out, that box art is awful for #1.

Another series i'm trying to catch up on. I have WA III in my backlog. Although it was a different game from the rest of the series, I enjoyed WA XF.

Oh yeah, the game also has a dragon that uses elephant sound effects. So, that's awesome.

I normally refrain from posting random images in the newsposts, but the box art to that game was too good to pass up.

I have to know the story of why the box art is so bad.

Back in the day I chose to buy Alundra instead of Suikoden I. Whooops, after that Suikoden disappeared from shelves, never to be seen again. At least I did buy Suikoden II for the retail price. What an incredible game!

I did the same mistake. I'm not even sure what made me buy Alundra. I even forgot I actually played that. Then I just never got into the series after that due to various reasons.

Hey, Alundra was fantastic as well, so you certainly didn't get the short end of the stick.

Alundra was really good actually, although I never could beat it. But, in terms of availability I really did regret not buying Suikoden I. And I was never prepared to pay the inflated 2nd hand prices to get a copy.

I know I have my copy of Alundra still. Almost want to find it just for laughs to see how it plays now. I know i made it almost to the end but got stuck. Then I just never finished. I remember enjoying it but I still can't remember what made me pick it up...most likely an EGM review of the game.

I love Alundra, and have beaten it numerous times. I bought the second one a couple years back and it's like it's not even part of the same series. I vastly prefer Suikoden II to 1, but I never really gave 1 a fair shake. I will have to track it down sometime and do so.

It kinda was. Totally different dev, totally different publisher. I think it even started as a different game but somehow got the name slapped on there. I haven't played it, but from what I heard it was pretty bad.

Yea, I had heard those things as well, and it definitely shows. I only played it for a few minutes (maybe an hour), but it was just a pretty average 3D Action RPG, and definitely had none of the pseudo-Zelda/Landstalker awesomeness of Alundra.
