Does anyone play this? It's a really fun roguelike, but it is kind of hard. I suggest everyone who likes these sort of games to give it a go.

ESPECIALLY BECAUSE I NEED YOUR HELP!

Will someone who plays this game please rescue me? :o

Nintendo WFC Rescue Number: 0000-0000-8984

If you do not have access to the internet but would still like to rescue me, I can get a password rescue set up. Thanks to anyone who lends a hand. I don't have any items worth giving away, but I would try and rescue you if you were in the same situation!

I have always wanted to try this out.... but I haven't yet! Can't help ya! I do love the rescue concept though.

This game is freaking awesome!

Sorry I cannot rescue you though, a friend has been borrowing my copy recently.

If you die in a dungeon someone can rescue you, so you don't get a game over and lose all of your equipment. Let us not forget that game over here means game over.

I fucking love this game, I could go on forever about how good it is. It doesn't even get really awesome until after you've finished the main quest and reached the City of the Sun. The bonus dungeons are incredible.

P.S. You've been rescued, I sent you a Staff of Postpone, sorry but I'm the process of rearranging my warehouse, and everything is in jars at the moment so it's the best I could do. As much as I'd like to give you three trap armbands or four bufu's cleavers, I'd like to keep some for myself ;).

I played reams of this on the SNES but I never got very far past the second town.

Did they fix the Bufo's Staff in this version? The one the chef guy gave you? In the SNES version it never had any charges.

Yeah, they fixed that. There's a bunch of changes, new monsters, new bonus dungeous, I think there's some new items too, plus the wi-fi rescues are a pretty cool addition.

I never played the original, but I'm loving the heck out of this one. I've finished the main quest and two of the bonus dungeons and I'm slowing gearing up for the other bonus ones. The whole thing is a bit bittersweet knowing that the Wii one, Shiren 3, will never be localized, nor will the the next DS one.

A lot of ChunSoft's other games have been though, there's a jillion of them. Chocobo's Dungeon, Torneko, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, and so forth.

Shiren's pretty much the best of them though.

I do recommend checking out Azure Dreams though, if you're looking for something along similar lines.

Or Izuna II, which I have yet to play but am under the impression is great.

I'd love to try this game but someone else in the house is hogging it. >.>

As for Izuna, I played the first one quite a bit. It's awesome, though a bit brutal starting out. A friend of mine that has played both the first and second game has said that 2 is so much better it will make the first seem like an unfinished game.

I started playing Izuna 2, but I had to send it back to Gamefly because there were too many other games I need to play. I had a lot of fun though with the little bit I played, although I did die a lot.

I'm interested in playing Shiren, but I just don't have the time for this type of game at the moment. Maybe I'll eventually get the chance to check it out.

Thank you so much! I knew someone from the old site was really into the game, but I couldn't remember who. I'm gonna take a guess and say it was. I wasn't very far into the game, and I'm sure the rescue was a piece of cake for you, but I had a truck load of stuff I wanted to take back to town. Thanks again!

Hey, I told you that you could play it, just don't muck up the warehouse and you can't mess with it when I have an adventure started 8-P.

Like I said in some other thread concerning reviews, you can't take stock in them. Especially when it comes to a genre that you enjoy. Mainstream publications like to shit all over roguelikes for whatever reason. This doesn't make them bad games, and if nothing else it probably means they aren't for everyone.

If you enjoy RPG like game play where you need to think before you take every step, then you will probably like Shiren the Wanderer. If that doesn't sound fun to you then it won't be. Pure and simple.

I read alot about this game when it came out and thought it sounded cool. I install nethack from time to time and marvel at the randomness. If I can find it cheap enough on Amazon I would probably get it. Used like new ftw.

Rougelikes/Mystery Dungeon games are extremely niche. I don't think any of the reviews of the game are wrong, I think that most people would hate the game, but the things that turn most people off are the ones that make it so appealing to the small group that really enjoy them.

I think that anyone who feels that games are becoming too similar, too safe, or too simple should at least check one out, because they're very different in very fundamental ways. Plus, you can pick up Shiren on the cheap, it sells for $20 new, and you might be able to find it even cheaper than that.

As Kats points out, mainstream game reviewers shit all over roguelike games because they don't fit in with what you're "supposed to do" in games these days.

Yes, you are going to die in a roguelike. You are supposed to. It's how you learn more about how to play the game, and in the instance of Baroque (another awesome roguelike), you must die in order to actually make the story go anywhere. Repeatedly. Still lots of fun, though!

Depends on definition of "mainstream" but not all of them (http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3166800&p=39&sec=REVIEWS) shit on roguelikes.

I picked Shiren up some time ago and enjoyed what I played. I haven't had a chance to go back to it, and now I'm playing Izuna 2. I figure once I beat it, I'll go back to Shiren. A kind of "warm-up" for the full marathon.

Thanks for posting that review, Origami. It was well written, doing a good job of explaining the games features while warning of the difficulty.

I recommend that anyone who is intrigued by the game (either by previous knowledge or because they saw this topic) give it a read.

In related news...I just ordered Baroque because of that damn Amazon Deal of the Day.
