View Full Version : Sins of a Solar Empire: Multiplayer thread or "Ships go boom!"

Given the talk in the beta and Cog GotY thread i thought it's about time we has an "official" thread for some good old multiplayer Sins Action. This likely won't take off again until the expiation is out of beta but knowing how hard these things can be to organise i thought we may as well start now.
So who's interested? what day and time is best for people to play? Who's got the beta and may be up for a few games over the festive period? Nothing says happy Christmas like a gift wrap fleet appearing in the sky of your home world bring joy and fireworks to rain down on the populous... yup.

I'm in. I've recently taken my battlefleet out of mothballs.

I'm in the beta, I'll play. Weeknights after 8pm Eastern, or anytime weekends if I have enough notice.

I need a time turner to give myself 30 hour days. I cannot spare the hours it takes for a proper online session anymore. Curse this gainful employment.
I need to sign up for the beta, maybe twist my old buddy Blair's arm. But are there any modifications to speed the games up a bit? Part of why I dig COH is that a long 6 person game is still a half hour or 45 minutes long.

With the beta they recommend that you up all the game speed options to fast since games have to the potential to be longer. Makes sense since people can defend more heavily. Much less chance of stream rolling through some ones empire if you get the drop of them while there fleets are tied up.

I'm up for a game. I've never played online though, so I'm not sure what I need to do. It also won't be until this weekend, since I'm visiting family for Christmas.

Sign me up, once my motherboard RMA returns and I make sure that the system is running fine.

Hey, I was the one who was supposed to make this thread! I've been working on getting this going again for a couple of weeks now. :p
That aside, I'm definitely in, and I've also recruited Spigot and Gigafuzz.
Voodoo and I played yesterday and had a blast steamrolling everyone who stood in our way.

I'll play, Coddy. Can I be on a team with someone? I'm pretty bad at RTS's and I've played much Sins by myself (but I'm still bad...as well, it's been a while, so I've forgotten a lot), so I sort of know what I'm doing...
I've never actually played Sins online for fear of being crushed.
For me, the best time is probably... next week, up until Thursday or so, in the evenings. After Thursday...I don't know what my schedule will be, or if I'll have internet. I'm moving into my new place on Thursday and am unsure how things will be going. But I definitely want to play some Sins.

Nah, it's not that. I was just hoping to get this whole thing going.
I'll get over it though. :p
I can't wait to play!

We won't really be starting until the expansion comes out in January. I'd be up for playing with you though if you are available before then. Send me a PM on here and we can team up together against the AI. :)

I might be in for this. I plan on buying the expansion, but I've only just recently started feeling like I've played enough to get the hang of this game.. and I've only rarely played with more than one star. :o

You'll be alright. Most of the people who play aren't super hardcore or anything. Besides, you can always team up with others. :)

I love the LRMs! They are probably my favorite ship in the game.

Ditto on the LRM's. What's your guys' race? I personally prefer TEC to anyone else...

TEC and Advent for me. If it's a no rush game, I prefer to go Advent because of its cap ship bonuses.

Everyone plays TEC. Seriously, play online and 9/10 people play TEC. I like the Advent is well. I think I've only played as the Vasari once.

I've kind of always liked the TEC, it's just what I got used to playing...
I know a little bit of the one alien race...Vasari, I think? Hated the other one.

I need to play more games as the Vasari. I don't even know what their advantages are.

I've played most as TEC too, and I definitely like them, but I've started liking Advent a lot. I need to practice with them more. The Vasari voices bug me too much.

Always Vasari for me... big fan of the capital selections and the ability to voop around with those stationary gates you can build.

You're the first Vasari fan that I've met. It's good to know that we'll have some variety when we play.

I go random. Granted, I've not played the game that much, but I enjoy different aspects of them all. The Vasari colony capital ship's special ability 'Nano Disassembler' is obscene! I don't like their ship design though. My favourite looking ship is the Advent carrier, by far.

What does that Nano Disassembler ability do?
The TEC colony ship is supposed to give you free extractors when you upgrade it, but I've found that most of the time it doesn't give you any extractors! Has anyone else run into this?

I tend to default to the TEC since i know them best but i'm going to give the other 2 a run over during the beta and see if there new tech interest me. The advent seem like they might have a new advantage... when i play them i tend to go for a culture "build" and now that you can more heavily defend your self you should be able to sit back a bit more with and let your culture do the work. Stop people taking planets near yours and slowly expand. I have a feeling they may be the best turtle race but we shall have to see.

Nano Disassembler (http://sinsofasolarempire.wikia.com/wiki/Nano-Disassembler) basically reduces an enemy ship's armour, and does a large amount of damage over a period of time. At level 3 it's pretty nasty. The recharge on it is stupidly quick as well, meaning you can just keep casting it on enemy cap ships and they go down in no time.
Of course, other ships and races have very powerful special abilities as well, but I had a chance to play with that one recently and took a shine to it.
As for the free extractors, I think you have to leave it alone for a wee while after the planet becomes colonised. I've never really paid much attention, but I head some other people talking about it. I think the general idea is 'Patience, young padawan'. :)

I'd be up for a game some time. I typically play TEC just because I'm an economic whore in strategy games, though I haven't played Sins in months :(
Also, thanks Voodoo!

I suggest Advent, I like that they can make huge swarms of fighters. You need to act quicky, militarily speaking, because the Tec and Vasari have vast end game resources. They have abilities to make colonization easier in their Harmony Tree. The Vasari have orbital weapons and the Dark Fleet at end game(which can be free units or can be used to be recycled into resources).

I really need to play Vasari more - as KG said they get some cool stuff end of game.
I've been itching to play this lately, but I keep putting it off because I know I won't play anything but this if given the chance. I've been avoiding installing Civ IV, Company of Heroes, and Dawn of War for the same reason. I need to just give in and embrace them all.
