Does anybody else get drunk and play this with friends for maximum hilarity?
If so what are your trump cards?

I've held this in my hands many times, but have never taken it to checkout. I will rectify that someday....but who knows when.

I am not going to lie...this game is nowhere near as fun as I expected it to be. I love party games and board games and stuff like that, but this one is just BORING.
It could also be that my sense of humor is kind of warped and nobody seems to think my card combinations are as hilarious as I do.

Is this one of those card games for drunks? Because I'd want to play it if it is.

Helen Keller + Touchy Feely = Best play in the game.

It is too good after a large amount of alcohol. Hell, Helen Keller, Hiroshima 1945, and Hitler always win. We usually just play what ever you are most amused by wins. I've heard of people doing arguments for why they should win but that just seems crazy to me.

Yeah, my friends and I have never played the "what makes more sense" rules, it's always the "what the fuck that's ridiculous and makes me laugh" rules. It certainly makes the game infinitely more enjoyable.

It's been a long time that I played the game. My wife and I bought it when we heard an advertisement for it on the radio and we played it a few times with some friends. Main issue is we all tend to have gaming ADD so we start a game, play it a few times, then forget we have it.
Is it odd that as my daughter is getting older I look forward to teaching her about Candy Land and other games I loved as a kid?

We have a rule that Helen Keller always wins. Doubly so if you pick "evil" or "narcissistic" or something.

Only if she's like in her teens now. ;)

Dude, let's learn XNA and make an Apples to Apples XBLA game!
Would anyone pay for such a thing?

Not really fun sober, but tons of fun drunk.
Trumps: Helen Keller and Hitler.

The group I used to play board games with loved this game. I seem to remember winning with the Tom Cruise card a lot... he just fits so friggin' well with all those negative adjectives. Can't go wrong with Hitler either. We usually went with whatever made us laugh the hardest.
...always reminds me how screwed up my sense of humor is.

A2A is an awesome game! We play by the "judge gets to pick whatever they want" rule so sometimes the "best" answer wins and sometimes the funniest answer wins. We also allow people to try to sell an answer to the judge which opens up a meta-game of selling your opponent's answer because you know the judge hates you and will never pick the one they think is yours.
My favorite thing about the game is trying to explain it to someone who's never played it and watching their eyes glass over as they assume it's the dumbest game ever. Then you bust it out and get them drunk and it's all they wanna do for the next month.

I've tried this a couple of times...but my sense of humor is so warped that half the time I think I have a nuclear bomb of a play and I get a table full of "wtf" looks as I laugh alone hysterically.

Hitler, AIDS, dead babies, my dear friend's dead mom's vagina. Nothing is sacred during these sessions of As to As. My girlfriend once spent 15 minutes arguing why canned corn was more tragic than the Holocaust...and won. I was proud of her.
Spend a sober evening writing down your own cards (in which nothing crosses the line) then get drunk the next night using your cards in a game. Damn fun.

This game can be great. Automatic winners for me are Napoleon and the Great Chicago Fire. For my brother it's Tom Cruise and Aids.

I played once, and I did all right. My first "win"?
Juicy.
So I put down "Girl Scouts"

Wow, a game in this subforum I've actually played!
It is entertaining, but I imagine only if you have other players with fucked up senses of humor. It's great as a way of testing how well you know someone.

If you like As to As, try compatibility when drunk, we never had actual couples playing, but I do remember that regardless what our word lead was, it always somehow ended with satan.

I found this game was fun a couple of times and then lost a bit of its humor/appeal. Of course, I was sober when playing, so perhaps I was doing it wrong. :)

Not totally necro this thread, but I finally was able to track down a copy of this game. I played it once a year or so ago and loved it, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere for the longest time.
I look forward to playing this at work and home, in various states of sobriety.

Wow, I never saw this thread before either! I think it's 'cause this is the first time I've set foot in this area of the forums. I've played Apples to Apples once, but it was about two years ago. I seem to remember an argument about the badassedness of Samuel L. Jackson versus Batman. Something like that. It did not end well.

I LOVE Apples to Apples. The first time you draw "sexual" and someone puts down Gandhi...well, let's just say you won't be getting much done for the next few minutes.

We play drinking games all the time, so maybe I should try and find this. Sounds like a blast.

I have only played Apples to Apples once. After playing it, I bought it. :-) It is fun. Another game, that is similar, but REALLY goes downhill, when drunk is Things (http://www.thingsthegame.com/). It is bad though, when you get people like me that play though. The first time I played it with my friends, I tagged them all, on the first round. It was quite funny. The second time we played, my girlfriend, who had just met most of my friends, won. :-) It is a game about guessing who said what in response to a question posed by the card.
Get people a little drunk, and reduce their inhibitions, and you get some really REALLY messed up stuff. :-) Apples to Apples is a good warmup for Things. :-)

God I LOVE Apples to Apples. Never played it drunk (underage) but get a bunch of friends with twisted senses of humor and play at Stupid-O'-Clock in the morning and it's a blast.

The write in cards are my favorite.
"Uplifting" ends up having "Sylvia Plath" winning it.
We should do an Apples to Apples play by post.

I love this game, but it really has to be played with the right people. My friends and I used to play it in college while drinking, but the last few times I played it I was unfortunately in a room a Serious Adults(tm) who only liked serious answers. That takes all the fun out of the game IMO.

Yeah, this game really depends on the group of people playing it.
And the blank cards are the best. We had the house rule that if you drew one you could write down whatever you want on it. I got a blank as the green card "Chewy" was turned over, and instantly made a "Wookies" card. That's now one of our trump cards that almost always wins any time it's played.

Apples to Apples used to be fun... until my bro's g/f moved in. We usually play where all the cards are kept secret, and whichever card amuses us the most is the winner. However, she argues her card... EVERY ROUND. And then complains when she doesn't win.
Sucks all the fun out of it.

Our power was out all last week and we needed things to entertain us, so I bought the Target exclusive Apples to Apples ToGo. Much fun :)
