Oh crap. I can't decide between Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead, with Gears 2 giving them a good run for their money as well....

I think I have to leave my vote open for a while as well... It really was a fantastic year for games of all genres, and making a decision for the best one isn't something to be rushed...

I always go by what game I had/have the most fun with.

Burnout Paradise.

I bought it for both consoles.

I voted for MGS4, if only because I am such a Metal Gear nerd and it was such an impressive title, both technically and because it is one of those few games that bears the artistic vision of the creator without being diluted by groupthink. It might not be perfect, but what you're seeing in the game is what Kojima wanted to make, for good or ill and that's a real rarity in AAA games these days.

Unfortunately I haven't played Fallout 3 and Gears 2 yet so I picked the best game from the ones I played which would be GTA4

fallout 3 by a long shot

I went for Left 4 Dead, simply because I've had the most fun with it of the games on this list. I might have gone with Fallout 3 had I played it.

I really want to vote for Sins of a Solar Empire though. :p

I think some people are going to be angry over the lack of Little Big Planet.
Yeah, that makes no sense, especially with a few that were included. MGS4 is the correct answer, anyway, but LBP was definitely in contention.

EDIT: I'm also surprised at no Fable 2, I know a lot of people really thought highly of that game.

Spigot

I can handle LBP not being on the list, if only because it had so many monumental gaffes during its launch and afterwards. I love the game to death, but I could see it being left off the table. I'd bet that if there were an 8th slot, it would get it.

I dunno. Might have been Fable 2 there.

No no no a thousand times no. It was good, but it is not GotY material. No. nonononono.

Sorry, but, no. :D

It might not be perfect, but what you're seeing in the game is what Kojima wanted to make, for good or ill and that's a real rarity in AAA games these days.

This became my reasoning.
Burnout: Paradise was close to contention, I've had so much fun with it. But I never really play for hours on end with it, just little bits and pieces.
Dead Space was great when playing it, but it didn't stay with me long after playing.
Fallout 3 has been great, but the argument of "Oblivion with guns" still pops up. Though, the overall game world feels more tightened up, and the story was shorter than expected.
Gears of Same, but the first wasn't really my style either.
GTA4 was a massive letdown. Less freedom, less incentive to do stuff, and the story wasn't nearly as unique as the reviews made it out to be. Overhyped, even moreso than Halo 3 was, something I thought couldn't happen.
Left 4 Dead hasn't pulled me in quite like TF2 did last year. It's good and well done, I just haven't had any of the experiences that I would have hoped.

I can understand LBP not making the final list, at its core, it is simple, and there have been the online issues. It's been good, but not great. Still fun though.
But not having Sins of a Solar Empire, that's just wrong. I have dumped so many hours into that game. And now that I have a super computer, it runs like butter. And the weekly Sins games we had going for about a month were just awesome. With the mini-expansion coming soon, I can foresee games starting up again. NEEDS MOAR PC GAMING!

Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3 are amazing games but to be honest, I'm used to amazing games on my PC. MGS4 was an amazing game on a console so I went with that.

Left 4 Dead, I will say it again: solid multiplayer, fun single player, all wrapped in a highly polished and detailed world, makes for a perfect game.

Each game on that list deserves to be there, but I went with Fallout 3. Best game I've played since Bioshock.

The only problem I have with the game is the little content it provides.

Toss up for me, gears2 or fallout 3, but pound for pound Gears just tickled me in all the right ways, by a hair. But whatever, I dont think there really is a game of the year anymore, the games are all too different and great in their own ways, impossible to really compare them.

Fable 2 popped into my mind, but as much as I loved it, I really don't think as a whole it holds up to the others, LBP seems much the same, very niche and only the die hards are really going to sink themselves into a game like LBP to see and enjoy its brilliance. MGS4 I didn't play, but between Gears2, Fallout3, even Deadspace, I don't see how anyone could say one is better than the other, they are all top tier.

4 games I to both series and I continue to fail to comprehend the ridiculous amounts of praise heaped on both the GTA and MGS series. Of the options given, my pick is Dead Space. It wasn't particularly innovative but that game was as polished as they come. But my real get of the year is definitely Sins of a Solar Empire.

THIS! the beta for the expansion has gotten me wanting to play again, once it's fully out we should try at lest play a few times a month again. I never really did get in to the habit with you guys sadly...

But on the goty issue i just don't think it has the mass appeal to be worth putting on the list. I mean i love the game and i've always been a very strong proponent of it but in this case i still think fallout 3 would win. And if i'm thinking along those lines i don't see it picking up more than a few votes.

I voted for MGS 4. I think this was the first game that showed the true ability of the Playstation 3.

Yup, it's the console to have if you like watching movies ;)

oh come on some one had to say it

It was a tough call between Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3, but in the end I went for Fallout 3. They're both phenomenal games, though, and I think both with be extended long beyond their "shelf life" by the strength of their communities and the fan-driven development of new content that will doubtless happen with each.

Toss up between Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3. Left 4 Dead with its amazing cooperative gameplay and Fallout 3 for porviding oen of the best gaming experiences that I have had in years.

Usually, any year in which an MGS game comes out is a no-brainer decision for me, but not this year. I loved MGS4. It was great pay-off for following the series, and had some fantastic elements (the beginning of Act Four is my "Game Moment of the Year," that's certain). However, I only played through it once, and it didn't feel like the capstone game I was hoping for. That's my own fault, I let wishing and expectations so strongly foreshadow the game, but it remains that it still fell short of what I wanted out of the final game in the MGS series.

Fallout 3 is awesome the way Oblivion is awesome - hours of content, a true sense of excitement and exploration, with DLC and mods it will be entertaining until the next Elder Scrolls game comes out. So I gave Fallout 3 my GOTY vote, even though it feels a little like committing adultery.

My vote went to Dead Space. I had a hell of a time with Fallout 3, but it's ending keeps me from voting for it. Dead Space was a solid ride throughout the entire thing.

I still don't understand the appeal of Left 4 Dead, but whatever. I hated Geometry Wars too and they're almost exactly the same experience.

If it weren't for the horrible driving physics of GTA IV, and it's insistence that you use them by making 30% of the missions chase missions, I might have voted for it. However, the 75+ hours I've already put into Fallout 3 tell me that it should get my vote. I can easily see myself spending over 100 hours on the game. I haven't done that with a non-sports game since FFVII.

Yea! Zombies!

Left 4 Dead is the kind of thing that really drives the industry forward. The teamwork and communication necessary to survive is the kind of thing that can't be done in other forms of entertainment, and adds more to the experience than graphics could EVER hope to achieve.

Solitary gaming experiences have existed for years, luring people into basements and rec-rooms, away from each other for hours and hours of silent, lonely gaming. Left 4 Dead forces people to come together, and everyone has a great time because of it. It does not matter if you are trying to survive, or playing as the infected, good communication and teamwork are more essential than reflexes.

Left 4 Dead is the kind of game that can only exist in today's modern age of networked machines with real-time voice chat. It truly represents evolution and change in the industry, and is much more than a new skin on an old game as others in the poll are.

Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3 were the two choices for me. I had to go with Fallout 3 in the end. L4D is great, but Fallout 3 edges it out because it's a complete game as-is, whereas I'm waiting on updates like additional maps for L4D.

As for Fable 2 not being on this list, I wouldn't have voted for it, but it did already win GotY from X-PLay.

I eventually went with Fallout 3. The amount of content, and the fact I spent hours wandering the wasteland taking it in - and not even seeing half of it - tips it over the edge for me.

Left 4 Dead is a very close runner up though. All the little details in that game add up to something very special indeed.

The weekly games are going to start up again, if I have anything to say about it.

I've already got Spigot, Voodoo, and Gigafuzz on board. You should join us as well.

Several deserving games on this list, 5 of my favorite games of the year actually. I went with Fallout 3, it was the most immersive game for me this year and grabbed me the most. Can't wait to go back when the first DLC hits, if not before.

I wanted to say MGS4 because I loved it so much, but after conversing with my girlfriend, I had to go with Fallout 3. It was a tough call for me tho, they were both great games for different reasons - in the end, I just feel like I'm going to actually play Fallout 3 more over the years.

Man.... Tough decision... I had to go with Fallout 3. Left 4 Dead was a close, close, close 2nd, but I just think Fallout "earned" it slightly more. If someone else told me Left 4 Dead was their GotY, I certainly wouldn't argue with them or even try to convince them that Fallout 3 was better. It was a great gaming year based on those 2 games alone.

Persona 4 deserves this award just as much as any other game on this list, if not more.
