I just realized, I'm not a shooter fan if these are my choices.

Left 4 Dead wins for the inventive co-op. Other than that, I'd prefer playing older games.

Dead Space didn't make the list? Inconceivable.Dead Space was on the Action game list.

It was a hard game to categorize, because even though you do definitely shoot things in Dead Space, it isn't really a shooting game, per se. Against the other contenders, it was decided to leave it off.

Left 4 Dead by a mile.

Left 4 Dead, with Gears 2 being a close 2nd. Far Cry 2/Crysis Warhead are third. Why is Crysis Warhead not on here? Fuck.

Mercs 2 SHOULD NOT be on here.

Gears of War 2 with Left 4 dead following not far behind.

Left 4 Dead is great for having a laugh and kicking some Zombie arse in Co-op but it hasn't given me the rush I thought it would. I need to play it a little more but I still don't see it topping the awesome that is SWAT co-op.

Granted, everyone has their opinions about which games are or aren't eligible, but considering all of the great shooters this year (where's Rainbow Six Vegas 2?), it seems odd that Mercenaries 2 and Left 4 Dead are on this list. Okay, Left 4 Dead can be classified as a shooter, but is it really the best? One major gripe about the game is the lack of iron sights, which is a norm now.

And if Mercenaries 2 is eligible, why not GTA IV? They controlled almost exactly the same. Why not SOCOM Confrontation? It's a third-person shooter...

Just curious. I haven't followed the whole contest to this point, so maybe there are balance issues I haven't considered...

JayVe

Lack of more precision aiming, I'd imagine. A game like L4D seems much more arcadey and therefore I wouldn't think would need something like that. Do you really need to go for head shots or shoot specific limbs in L4D? From what I've heard, it doesn't look like it.

Well this is the first I have heard about that. Also, if everyone followed the norm then there would be no new IPs. The 'new' brands that came out would be reskins/rehashes of old games since everyone would follow 'the norms.'

Some guns have closer crosshairs and headshots do a lot more damage, but a lot of it really isn't that precision. The game does well to stick to that these people are just survivors, not military types, so they aren't as precise as a trained soldier. (It is implied, not stated, but the feeling is definitely there.)

Left 4 Dead, like Gears of War, puts the bullets in the center of your screen. In Left 4 Dead, there is a crosshair there, letting you know where your shots will go.

I've never ever heard of Iron Sights as a feature, or lack thereof... and it sure as hell has no enjoyment with the amount of FUN I have with a title.

Why not SOCOM Confrontation? It's a third-person shooter...From everyting I've read about SOCOM Confromtation, it isn't anywhere near the quality necessary for Shooter of the Year. YMMV though, and I haven't played it myself. All I hear about is how much it needs patching.

Well, let's see here...

Popular games/series featuring "iron sights":
Rainbow Six Vegas
Call of Duty
Medal of Honor
Far Cry

Popular games/series featuring mid-range zoom:
GRAW
Gears of War
Mercenaries
...just off the top of my head. I figured that a thread full of shooter fans would know their way around shooters.

Just about the only FPS/TPS in the last couple of years without a zoom or precision targeting function has been Half-Life 2 and Halo 3-- oh, wait...I just figured out why I'm outnumbered.

I'm with you. SOCOM has become absolute crap; the original is still the best. I just thought it would qualify as a "shooter" above games like Mercenaries 2, where's it's possible to beat the game without using a gun.

I think there may have been a misinterpretation of features. I was referring to 'features' in the sense of additions to a game or product, not as in 'featured articles'.

You can have two games. One has a list of features on the back a mile long. The other doesn't. The feature list is no indication of the amount of fun to be had in a title. Adding features to a game does not necessarily add fun to a game.

I have a motto that I use almost daily in my work:

Doing something simply, and simply doing something, are at two opposite ends of the spectrum.

Adding 'features' to a game is easy. Removing features until only the core elements necessary for FUN, is a MUCH more difficult process.

I agree...hence my comment about SOCOM. Pac-Man is so much more fun than many of the games available now.

I prefer some type of precision aiming. I loved it for Star Wars Battlefront, and I've loved it for everything since. I read in the IGN review (don't scoff, I read them all for kicks) that Left 4 Dead sorely needed "iron sights", and I happen to agree.

I never said anything about realism. I just said that my favorite shooter feature/mechanic seemed to be popular and that it was missing from a game that would have benefited from it...IMO.

I think you'll find that very few people care about post count here. Most of us have been together for years, on another site prior to this one. Newcomers are always welcome, but you'll quickly find that posts that aren't well thought out will be chewed up and spit out the grinder. The ground material is then used as pie filling for humble pie. I've grown quite accustomed to the taste of such pies, and particularly adore the flaky crust.

Use the hunting rifle if you want to zoom. Also, if you can't easily get headshots at range with the assault rifle/uzi you need more practice. Crouch if you need some help with accuracy. The game is very well balanced as it is, enemy speed, weapon damage, reload times etc., I would not use a zoom in a game with such a brisk pace.

I know which site most of CoG came from, and I tread lightly on that subject, because I was never a member there and avoided that site for a reason.

No harm done, just having fun. Except for violent, I think he needs a proctologist...

Tearful and witty. How you could have questioned your reception is beyond me.

Not surprising, you fail at making a point.

I must have bumped into those "very few people", or maybe my post was too loud and woke up JayVe and pseudopseudo...

Well, I'll just tell ya, posts like this get people's hackles up:

In fact, I just looked up your Gamertag and laughed at the difference in scores...I wish I had as much time to waste. Seriously. It can be taken many ways. Some people could EASILY see you as insinuating that their entertainment time is wasted, and that you are somehow better than that being more frugal with your time. That's not how I took it, but I could easily see it being understood as condescending.

It continues though...

"I am wasting my time here."
"I must have mixed up CoG with Dimension X..."

I don't think you intend to come across as negative as you do.

No, I don't. Not at all. Maybe I'm too used to Co-Optimus, where we're generally more forgiving and casual. Or maybe I'm just too good at trolling; maybe I could switch jobs to Professional Troll, so I wouldn't be "wasting my time". That must be what violent does, he seems to think we're all being productive here.
Plus, I must be taller, because sarcasm and jesting doesn't fly right over my head... Oh, wait, I'm doing it again! :D Doh!

Thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt, anyway.

Listen dude, no one has it out for you. Myself included. You have to realize though that while you came in here with a valid argument, you failed to explain why you felt that way. Instead you blamed pseudopseudo, JayVe, myself, this community based on your post count, the idea that this community is DimensionX and now the fact that this community isn't as casual and forgiving. You want to know what works here? State your case. Explain why you think what you do and the assholes and the genuines will be easy to pick out. You keep on slinging mud and you won't make any progress here. Take that as you will.

You were right that I "fail in making my point", because you missed it every time.

First you said that I was using realism as a feature, and I never once alluded to realism...at all. Now you're accusing me of comparing CoG with Dimension X (a TMNT joke, by the way, which was probably before your time), when I was actually inferring that I was coming TO CoG FROM another dimension (my own little world...guess you've never heard the term).

Maybe I was being too cutesy for you. You should probably just skip my posts, since you're already skimming them.

Take your hand and wave it over your head; that's where my posts are going. Take that as you will. ;)

I think that may be the problem. You don't need a war face. Just state your side, back it up, be willing to change your mind when new evidence is presented or agree to disagree. Slinging mud, being snarky, and editing in 'I'm better than you' back-handed remarks like the one below will get you lots of attitude flak in return. I know from lots of first hand experience of having my ass handed to me in discussions.

I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I HAD to take a crack at the snarky "oh, wait...I just figured out why I'm outnumbered." I've actually read some of the stuff you write over at Co-Op, and I dig it. *thumbs up*

Getting back to the topic at hand, Left 4 Dead is great for the co-op, Resistance 2 has awesome set pieces and co-op, and Mercs 2 is a straight up crazy shooter. Those are the three I played, and Gears never appealed to me ever, especially after borrowing the PC version of the first, and uninstalling it after 5 minutes. A Call of Duty game every year spells trouble for the franchise, especially after a kick-ass jaunt in modern times, going back to WW2 was just stupid. The only one I can't say anything about is Far Cry 2, it got lost in the rush.

Sadly, since I've been having problems with the PC I built (bad motherboard), I haven't had too much time to actually play Left 4 Dead, but what time was spent was fun. Though, I had more fun just piddling around in Mercs 2. Crysis Warhead would have been better served in that slot though, especially once you can actually play it on a system that handles it quite well.

Wholly shit! We are all different!

I learned many times over the years with these guys that.

1. Grammar matters
2. State your case
3.Im not as smart as I once thought I was
4. If im taken to task in the early days at least someone is responding to something I wrote.
5.Im a terrible poster that has gotten just a little better
6. I have terrible grammar.

The guy is an editor at Co-Optimus, right? The co-op focused site? Left 4 Dead is a game built from the ground up around the NEED for co-op. little disconnected? ;)

Thinking that I'd find at least one person to agree with me, I posted what I did. I was wrong in thinking that anyone here would share that opinion. Either that, or my opinion doesn't matter because my post count is low. ;)

L4D has some type of "precision aiming". You crouch, your aim is more precise. The only difference from something like CoD is that you're also accurate when you're running around and you don't lose your entire field of view to focus down some sights.

Which would work about as well in L4D as it would in Serious Sam.

Another vote for Left 4 Dead. From what little I played of them, Mercs and Far Cry 2 were fine, but neither of them were doing anything nearly as new as what L4D managed to pull off so well. CoD:WaW is CoD 4 reskinned - yay - and I have zero interest in ever playing Gears of War 2.

Easy choice.
