Unh... It's been on beta for a really long while. I've had it for weeks.

Really? Odd. I just got the email.

As for your question, I don't know. I'd love to see them include a tutorial in it, because I have no clue what the hell I'm doing.

Do you have to pony up the full price to get the beta? I'd like to try it, but not sure if it's worth the dough, as it may end up that I still prefer DotA.

It's basically a professionally made version of DotA. Depending on how you feel about that, it's either awesome or completely mediocre. ;) It uses a very optimized Supreme Commander engine, which scales terrifically for this game since you're not trying to track a zillion units on a battlefield 1000 kilometers across.
I like it so far. The beta gives access to a couple of different arenas and a few hero, or "demigod", characters. The Unclean Beast is a plague-spreading Colverfield-looking monster. The Oak is a direct damage spellcaster. The Rook is the big living castle guy in all the commercials. Regulus is crossbow-wielding sniper.
The full game will have more demigods and arenas, but I don't think it will ever approach the amount of content the WC3 mod has.
It is very much a beta product, at this time. There's almost no balance and the interface is a bit buggy still. What's there is pretty fun, though.

Beta2 launched today. Beta1 has been going for a while, and if you didn't get in before DateX, then you couldn't partake in Beta1. So this is the launch of Beta2.

Telefrog: Thanks for the heads up. I do enjoy DOTA, usually have a few frens come over and we lan it. Hope a demo comes out for it.

That would explain it. :D
I checked out Beta 2 last night and they revamped quite a bit from beta 1. They added two of the "general" demigods which can generate a retinue of combatants. (I think the plan is to add two more characters to bring the roster up to a full eight.) Your home Citadel can now be upgraded with cash. The menu interface is completely different.
The game crashed on me twice. According to the Demigod forums, they are working on addressing the instability which got worse with this client.

We're sitting here in Ventrilo, playing some DOTA.
We're pushing and we're owning, the enemy we're toying.
We're running and we're creeping, the enemy we're sleeping.

It's not my fault even a whiff of a DotA mention puts that song in my head all day. :(

In celebration of being done with work (For the holidays) I plan on playing Demigod and drinking all night tonight. Hit me up on steam (danielout) or xfire (danielout) if you want to play. Or just gchat me ([DoYouSenseATrend]@gmail.com) and we can get in.
I've played a couple of matches so far, and it is a lot more refined than the PAX build. I think they're on to something here; it is a freaking blast. Even losing, which is all I've done, is fun. Stability hasn't been an issue for me, but initial game startup (be it connecting to games, initial load/sync of a game, etc) seems to be wonky.

I've been tempted to check this out. Is it $50, or is it $40 like Sins was at release?
Honestly I've been a little burned by Chris Taylor's last few games, so I'm a little apprehensive about buying another one. I wouldn't even be paying attention to this game if Stardock weren't behind it.

That was exactly my attitude going into it.
It's helpful to define an abbreviation before using it (like what is DOTA)
edit - War3, defence of the ancients?
