Hey guys,

Is my current mobo ASUS P5WD2 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131547) compatible with this cpu Intel E8600 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115054&Tpk=E8600).

It has the same socket structure I'm just not sure.

Should be good to go :), both are LGA 775. Also, nice upgrade.

Thanks, I better order it before and buy some flowers for the wife :). I have the intel d 805 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116001)currently.

It says deactivated item, did you already order it?

Yeah, that is what I currently have. Just wondering if it will be a good enough upgrade.

Well, I guess I cant get that CPU. It's not listed as one that I can use :http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20070910200737625&board_id=1&model=P5WD2&page=1&SLanguage=en-us

Honestly if you want to upgrade you can get this mobo (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128337) for $90 which I'm sure is compatible, as I have it and the E8400.

Make sure your PSU has enough juice, not just peak, to support the upgrade.

Gigabyte = win.

Only bummer about that one was it didn't support SATA hotplugging in XP, but that might be an OS limitation.

Not an OS limitation. I can do SATA hotplugging on my XP with my nForce4 motherboard.

Don't buy that CPU. Why not just get the much cheaper E8400 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115037) (or E8500 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115036))? 3.0 Ghz vs 3.33 Ghz
Or would recommend this Core 2 Quad (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16819115043).
You can get a decent P35/P45 board for ~$100 and dirt cheap DDR2800 (<$70)

According to the user reviews on Newegg, 65nm processors are not supported out of the box. That means it won't support any E8X00 CPU's (which are 45nm) but you could upgrade to a Q6600 or E4X00 (the only 65nm CPU's Intel is still selling) with a BIOS update. If you're short on cash, I would recommend going the Q6600 route, especially if you're overclocking. Otherwise get a cheap P43 mobo.

Man, I was just looking for a simple CPU upgrade. I guess I will wait until xmas and get a mobo, cpu, and new case.

I have a 500w psu right now.
