Ordinarily I wouldn't consider the release of box art to be news, but I think an exception is warranted for Resident Evil 5, especially given that it's at the top of a lot of people's must-have lists for 2009. Without further ado:

Pretty nifty, huh?

Edit: on second thought, that cover isn't that great.

God, it's always that same exact pose with Chris. All the wallpapers I took from the RE5 site have Chris in that same bulging bicep pose. Not complaining though... it's a good pose. :p

It's like they used the old He-Man figure for reference...with the same locked-in bicep curl positioning.

First thought: Oh, that's a "5"?

Second thought: It actually looks pretty good, overall.

Third thought: Blast Hardcheese! Smash Lampjaw! Rip Steakface! Crud Bonemeal!

First thought: Cool Rated M

Second thought: Hmmm guy is beefy (roids) and girl is skinny with no muscle but will probably be able to defy gravity and carry a ton of gear.

Third thought: Hopefully the dialogue isn't as cheesy as the other RE games.

Fourth thought - where's the ESRB Online Disclaimer on the PS3 box?

Fourth thought - where's the ESRB Online Disclaimer on the PS3 box?Is it normal for the disclaimer to be on the front of the box now? (though obviously they've got it on the 360 one shown above.)

Yes, at least from what I've seen.

I think a big version of the "5" alone would have been cooler.

No online co-op for PS3 confirmed! :p I kid, it is decent box art. I'm not as excited as I was about this since I played the demo but I am still looking forward to it.

It's fine, but it looks like most other box art. Doesn't really stand out in any way to me. Not that it has to I suppose.

lol, they put Africa on the cover.

Generic shooter box art. I guess there will be no pretenses of its survival horror roots in any form. Definitely disappointing. Not too troubled by it, because I keep my discs in a folder rather than in their cases.

The RE4 EUR box art was the one to knock off.

Sixth thought, because it's RE 5.

So strange. I keep seeing, "well this isn't really front page news but..." Everywhere I go. Must be SLOW news especially for something on its 5th edition.
Back on topic. Bad cover. Thats not very catching.

First thought: UK/EU box art beats US box art.
Second thought: EU box art always beats US box art.
Third thought: EU RE4 box art beats all.

I'm sure there's going to be some sort of Limited Edition, too. I wonder what that's going to look like. I often don't like LE boxart as much as the regular edition... not that it really matters all that much.

Problems with EU RE4 box art. The words "PAL" and "Pegi". ;)

Yea, I do not understand why people post about box art. What's the point of it? I honestly could not describe the box art for most of the games I own, since I take out the game, play it, and put it away when I'm done.

It honestly grates on me when I see posts like this. I can't explain why.

I personally like to see games and DVD's with as little shit on as possible myself. RE4 Cover with the PEGI, PAL, SoQ and double disc icon gone. The NGC splash across the top reduced too.

Sony don't do much right (at the moment), but their movement to the left for their branding is better, although you lose a little real estate (the same is sometimes true of branding at the top also).

Oh, and just to get back on topic I actually prefer the US cover for 5. The EU one is lacking something I can't quite put my finger on.

Bulging bicep man-love?

As much as I'm into that ("hey, Big Tony, Big Al. It's like I'm cumming at home and at the gym!" [/Arnie] ), nope, that's not it.

Maybe it just has a bit too much dead space (no pun intended), but I'm not sure.

Also, holy cow!! how big is that 18 cert?? It's like a small moon.

Yes, I have to agree that the EU/UK covers are much better than the US ones. They set the mood really nicely.

The UK cover for RE4 has a creepy "Children of the Corn" type of look.

I have never played a single RE game. Are they actually scary, or just gory? Or both? Or campy?

On the back, like they always are. I have yet to see the Online Disclaimer on the front for any game. Every PC and PS3 game I have that has online always has the "Online Interactions not rated" on the back. (Or, I just never notice, and always know that the online portion of stuff is never rated)

They have their own atmosphere, with lots of gore and a few genuine scares, would be my personal description. You won't be in a constant state of dread as you play, but you'll jump in your seat here and there. And plenty of camp, mostly due to horrible voice acting and throw-away story writing.

That is the best RE cover ever. It would be wise for Capcom to provide an alternate cover for RE5.

I also agree that the UK/EU box art is much better than the NA boxart.

They could all use fewer logos though, sheesh.

JRR006
12-18-2008, 07:23 PM
Generic... blah. I don't know why every single NA cover has to have the main characters on it. Does every book cover printed here have a picture of the main character in a generic pose slapped in the center? That would get so old. I'm sick of looking at characters' ugly mugs, just give me some minimalist stylized titles or something.

I guess all I care about is what the side of the box looks like when it's sitting in my collection of 360 games! ;)

Checking out of those biceps of doom just makes me realize how much I want a resident evil game where you play as the every man as opposed to I enjoy lifting weights and not much else man.

I want them to go back to having female leads. The macho male thing is really overdone. I don't need another musclebound hero in a video game.

Apparently, the official box art looks a LOT like fan-made box art from months ago (http://www.gamezine.co.uk/news/game-types/shooter/capcom-copies-mock-re5-box-art-$1255936.htm).

http://www.gamezine.co.uk/ophoto/photo-x-$7023384$450.jpg

The fan-made art was posted online back in June 2008 and bears more than a passing resemblance to the final box art.

This makes me sad, because obviously somebody copied someone else. I have no clue who copied whom, but if you're correct, it seems Capcom is to blame. :(

Ugly box art.

But the European one is just as bad, in a different way.
