While it may not be the commercial success Sony had hoped for (so far), there's no denying that LittleBigPlanet has captured the hearts and minds of those who've taken the time to actually dig deep and make full use of the level creator and other unique tools offered by the title.
Underscoring this, the Media Molecule-developed title swept the annual Edge Awards, winning four awards in total - three for the game and one for the developer.
The full list of winners is as follows:
Best Game: LittleBigPlanet
Runners up: Grand Theft Auto IV, Fable II
Best Innovation: LittleBigPlanet
Runners up: New Xbox Experience, Left 4 Dead
Best Visual Design: LittleBigPlanet
Runners up: Street Fighter IV, Far Cry 2
Best Audio Design: Dead Space
Runners up: Grand Theft Auto IV, No More Heroes
Best Hardware: Xbox 360
Runners up: PlayStation 3, Wii
Best Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios
Runners up: EA, Sony Computer Entertainment
Best Online Experience: Left 4 Dead
Runners up: LittleBigPlanet, Gears Of War 2
Best Developer: Media Molecule
Runners up: Criterion Games, Rockstar North
Some surprising choices there, not to mention the omission of Metal Gear Solid 4.

Lots of awards for the home team(s)!
Not that they're not deserving, but it's kinda funny when you look at the "best developer" category.

Edge awards sounds out of touch. Little Big Planet is creative, and has a great sense of style. But calling it Best Game is a big mistake IMHO.
Best hardware? 360? Damn, I love my 360 for its GAMES, not for its hardware. best hardware goes to Wii because it is small, silent, eats little power, and never breaks. (IMHO)

I think by "Best Hardware" they mean best console, not best quality, etc. It's a nebulous term, though, especially in the context used.

Wonder if this sort of thing will have any impact on LBP's sales numbers?

That's often the issue in awards. Selecting the category titles can be hard as selecting the nominees.

Edge is all about "innovation". MGS4 is great, but not innovative in any way.
I read Edge every month, but lately they've really piss me off with their reviews. It doesn't seem they know what having fun is anymore. On to a point that I'm considering not reading it anymore.
Games like GTA or Halo 3 get away with huge flaws, get perfect 10s, because the core is so great and they innovate a little bit (I say they're fanboying), while a Fallout 3 get's a 7 because of some stupid shit that nobody would really notice if they really played it.
Their double standards annoy me to no end.
If the rest of the mag wasn't that good I wouldn't even bother.

I used to read Edge from cover-to-cover - even the ads. Now, not so much. Pretentious is probably the best word I can come up with at short notice.
However, salvation is at hand for those of us who loved the old Edge. gamesTM (http://www.gamestm.co.uk/sample.html) is by far the best written and most professional multiformat gaming mag out there. If you haven't read it, I suggest you so.

I didn't even know Edge gave out awards. <shrug> These guys are part of Future Publishing, correct?

Best Hardware should be renamed Best Library*
*if you do not own a gaming-capable pc.

Yes, GamesTM is the second magazine which I actually buy. I also just subscribed to it. They give me the same info and professional look on games without the crap of Edge.

Good for LBP, it hasn't been getting enough love. I wasn't overly impressed with the single player aspect, but it is a great game for multiplayer (since my girlfriend LOVES platformers).

Reading the blurb in the magazine, it seems like they were referring to the platform as a whole (they mention price, live, the video marketplace and software attach rates), and not the quality of the hardware itself (which they acknowledge as being a bit flaky).
More important though, are the 'Alternative' awards:
Best Chewed Scenery: Gears of War 2
Best Flop: Boom Blox
Most Unsatisfactory Whoring: Fallout 3
Most Special Special Editions: Mirror's Edge, Dead Space
Most Cunningly Engineered HUD: Dead Space
Best Old Edge Forum Aftershock: GTA IV (won't make much sense without the blurb)
Best Creator's Intentions: Peter Molyneux
Wettest Hats: Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway
Most Prolonged Inactivity: MGS4
Hardest Sell: Penumbra: Black Plague
Dumbest Things in Condemned 2: Condemned 2: Bloodshot
Literary Achievement: Far Cry 2
Best Worst Game: Alone in the Dark
Best Immoral Act: Fallout 3
Most Accidental Pies: Fable 2
Some of those won't mean much without the accompanying description, but you get the gist.

Plus after sitting through those loading screens I had the overwhelming urge to take up smoking...should be an award for best Phillips Morris ad...

You know, I used to be a big smoker. I still find myself feeling the urge to smoke when watching other people partake in a cigarette. Watching those agonizingly long loading screens really did make me want a cigarette. I wonder how people who are trying to quit took those painful loading screens, with the imagery tugging at their addiction the whole time.

one of the 50 things I didn't like about that game.
It's no wonder I never finished it.

Fable II up for best game?
What fucking dimension were these awards held in?

Fail. The NXE is not a good example of innovation.

You do realize that you can get up during one of those four 2 minute between act installs, right? You don't have to watch the entire thing, it's not like they go right back into the game after they're done, there's a confirmation.

Installs are unnecessary and I think they'll become less and less frequent in future.

Yea, they lost all credibility on a 360 for best Hardware...
Some of those selections were...odd....
Still, good for LBP. It held no interest for me and imo was doomed from the start (I know its not actually doomed) due to copywrite, giant peni and having to sift through the vast drug induced wasteland of vile scum to find the few shiny gems of user content but I appauled it for doing something different.

it also means every time I look back at the screen to see if it is complete, Snake is standing there smoking.
Also, I shouldn't have to LEAVE a game in order to continue. Those installs are one of the most fucked up things about gaming this gen, ESPECIALLY for a game trying so hard to be a cinematic experience.

Yeah, they're like commercial breaks during a movie. Maybe he should be promoting Marlboro.
