Out of curiosity, do any other colonists play the Warmachine (http://www.privateerpress.com/WARMACHINE/default.php) or Hordes (http://www.privateerpress.com/HORDES/default.php) miniatures wargames?
I know we probably have a few 40k players around here, as seen in the past on EvAv, but I had to wonder if there might be some Privateer Press/Iron Kingdoms fans in here as well. I've been playing since it's release in '03 and can attest to it being a damn sweet game. Since I'm a fiend for all things steampunk, I'm obviously biased, but still. :)

Nope! No prepaints in Warmachine. No plastics, either.
Full white metal line of really gorgeous models, right down to the infantry. The game scales well with anywhere from 3 to 50+ model armies so it's pretty adaptable to people's budget/time/interest.
Hell of a tournament scene, too. It's a fast, brutal game.

I played Warmachine a lot back when I lived in Providence (interesting to see that's where the OP lives!)... still have my Cygnar armies painted and ready to go, just no gaming stores whatsoever in downtown Philly, they're all out in the suburbs.

Heh! That's cool. Yeah, WM is extremely popular around these parts. Privateer Press even makes it out to a sizable convention that I help organize in Providence once a year, and they are a fun bunch of guys.
We're actually going to be in Philly in the near future running a WM tournament to promote the convention in '09, so who knows, maybe I'll run into you.

They're going plastic soon. It was announced recently. They're also going for individual army books next edition.

The only thing mentioned regarding plastics in WM was from Matt Wilson's recent commentary on the rising price of metals, and that alternatives were being looked at in the long term to keep costs down. He's also confirmed since that even in a worst case scenario, they would never consider doing a 100% plastic line for Warmachine, if at all. The community has been pretty vocal about it, and they've listened.
Also, I've heard zip about army books, and I'm pretty active in the community. I highly doubt they would ever go that route, simply because their release schedule doesn't really work in the same way as say, GW. Where did you hear that from?

To be honest I don't recall where I heard it, heard in passing on one of the various RPG/tabletop forums I'd imagine. I had a flurry of lurking on various miniatures forums of late because my DoW/Dark Heresy fueled 40k obsession of late had me considering getting back into miniatures again soon.

Weird. You and I must have hit the same forum because I heard that about WM just in the last couple days while I was searching to see what it was.
But I can't be bothered to paint right now anyway. My painting days are over sadly enough.

I love the visual design aspect of modeling and designing an initial color scheme, but the assembly line process of then going on to repeat same over and over again for dozens of models gets dull fast.
I frequently wish there was some sort of custom miniature service I could go through where I could give them an idea of what I wanted, maybe assemble some of the models if I feel like it, and let them do the hardwork of applying the same visual scheme across the whole army.

There used to be a company that allowed you to draw characters and send them in and they would mold them. I have about 300 of them right now. They probably don't exist anymore. They were in the back of Dragon Magazine.
I feel the same. However I would waste 1-2 months on some of the larger ones. I actually took 1st in a couple conventions back in the day but I just wanted to fucking play with them hahahahah.
My last was the Blue Dragon from Dragonlance...that damn thing took FOREVER>
And then proptly broke...along with my want to ever paint again.

Huh. Weird. I can tell you right now the Privateer Press forums would be blowing up if that was true. :D In the past though, there have been rumors of PP being bought out by numerous companies, including GW, all started by idiots who feel that two miniatures games can't share a marketplace. It reminds me of PS3/360 fanboys sometimes. WM and 40k can both be cool games, and many folks I know do play both, since they are fundamentally pretty different.
Also, Arcane, I hear you about repetitive assembly being rough. Infantry is always a grind. What you are talking about sounds like you might want look into one of the many painting/assembly commission services out there if you decide to jump into 40k again. There are some great studios that do custom work at a surprisingly reasonable price who can get an army of 40k, WM, or anything together for you.

The only thing that irritates me about the "GW vs. WM" attitude is that it completely fucking ignored all the other options out there that I frankly think are better games than either of them, as well as the attitude that treats their approach as the only valid way to design a miniatures game.
I've watched a couple very awesome games pretty much die on the vine, and other great games with much bigger communities than they're given credit for get ignored, in favor of a silly dichotomy.
