Being unemployed sucks balls. Being unemployed and more-or-less homeless sucks even larger, hairier balls, especially when it's 11 degrees below freezing.

I know I'm not the worst off out of everyone here, but I can say with a certain degree of confidence that I've never, ever been in such dire straits.

Anyway, I've applied to over 200 jobs, I've registered with every staffing agency in Colorado, I've got active accounts at Monster, Career Builder, JobING, etc. Hell, I've even applied to places like Target, etc. Retail stores will not hire me as they view me as "over qualified" (I swear I've heard that from 80% of the retail positions I've applied to) for the positions I've applied for.

On top of that, waiting times for the Colorado Dept. of Labor are now up around six hours. And their website is being hammered right now - I've been trying to access their unemployment benefits section for over two hours.

So anyway, at least I have my health, right? Oh, wait...

Sorry, that really sucks.

About being overqualified: I tailor my resume to the job I am applying for. If I were to apply to Target, for instance, I wouldn't list any of my work as a software developer on my resume, since it doesn't apply.

Leave off work experience that doesn't apply and you might have better luck.

I've been doing that. I have five active resumes right now, each one tailored to a particular field. Even my retail experience (six years managing a record store in Glasgow, Scotland) seems too much for most companies. It's like they want to hire me on minimum wage and I'm reluctant to even contemplate that right now.

I'm really sorry to hear that man. The over-qualified bit is a load of bull. Why wouldn't you want someone working for you that knew what the crap they were doing versus an entire group of people who are, largely, under-qualified. I've never understood that line in the slightest and it's the most irritating piece of garbage thrown out there.

I believe the reason is that companies can't afford people with experience right now. As I mentioned above, they are looking for people to do the same jobs as always, but now at minimum wage or just above that.

Oh I get that. I just guess that if I was desperate for employment, I'd eventually do minimum wage if it meant keeping myself from being homeless and keeping myself fed. I've had a really hard time finding a job before and was given that line so much that I don't think employers realize that "overqualified" doesn't always mean that I wasn't willing to work for them.

Yeah, I'm ready to do minimum wage about now. Thing is, it's not going to solve my housing issues. Rents are increasing as people looks to rent rather than buy.

Still, I'm sure I'll soldier through. There's always the homeless shelter downtown if it comes to that.

I should say that at present I have a roof over my head, but it's tenuous at best.

I hope and pray that 2009 is a 180 degree turn from your 2007/8 difficulties. You've had a really rough year or two. :(

As for the broader national outlook, and not to your specifics: Not to be a depressing pessimist, but I think for our nation, things are going to get much worse before they get any better. Not everyone will suffer equally or equivalent to their level of fiscal irresponsibility, of course (because life isn't fair, after all, and you can be responsible and be ruined, or irresponsible and profit, sadly), but I wouldn't be surprised if we approach Depression-era economic difficulties. I'm not predicting it, just thinking it's quite possible.

Bad times...bad times.

Not speaking for fits or anything, but as someone who has to turn away a few "over-qualified" folk, I don't want to hire someone that is going to keep looking for a new job after I hire them, and more often than not, those applicants expect pay much higher than what we start at.

That's very true. When I worked for Starbucks it was my job to go to the job fairs we had and interview people, etc. A good deal of the time I would interview people who worked "corporate" jobs previously and expected our pay to be salary right off the bat instead of hourly and kept insisting they need a management position. So I do get that and have had to talk with those same people.

My overall point was I feel (at least in the instances where I myself was interviewing for a position) that employers often don't realize that I'm willing to take a pay cut just to have a job. Though I do understand the concern that people would just assume they'll cut and run at the first sign of a "better" job.

Perhaps there's some information that could be of help at the Employment Security Commission of NC? (http://www.ncesc.com/splash.asp)

They have a link to a job bank...worth a shot.

Edit: If you have ever considered teaching, and enjoy traveling, and are unencumbered by family, you could make a decent living teaching English in Asia, particularly in Japan, Korea, or China, but literally anywhere. The jobs can be hit or miss in terms of quality, but I did quite well for three years. You can keep up with CoG no matter where you are, and import games as well.

Sorry to hear about your situition Fits, and I feel you. Your certainly not alone. I'll only have part time employment in the Spring, and this is largely due to the "overqualification" nonsense as well. I can't get a job teaching highschools because no highschool wants to hire someone with an English MA because they have to pay them more than starting teachers with only BAs. And all other jobs see someone with a Masters and I dont' even get called back.

So, I'll be teaching as a part time adjunct in the Spring. Which means I get paid $1,500 per class for the entire semester. It also means my health insurance goes away. I spent over $3,000 last year of my own money on healthcare costs and that was WITH good health insurance. And I still dont' know what the hell is wrong with me.

At first my doctor thought it was MS, but the second brain MRI didn't show any lesions. And since then the symptoms have progressed to where in addition to the dizzinyess and muscle tremors, I now have random jerking in my arms and legs. Parkinson's or Huntington's seem like the most likely culprits, but without health insurance, I'm not sure I will ever even find out or be able to pay for any sort of treatment.

Healthcare in this country is fantastic as long as you don't plan on actually, you know, having any real health problems. Even with a full time job and great healthcare I was barely keeping up with the medical payments. But now that I'm knocked down to part time, I have no hope of keeping up.

Have you considered not claiming some experience? I know a few people who had to do this at one point in their life because they were either over or underqualified for any given job.

J Arcane
12-15-2008, 11:13 AM
Well, I have a job now, a great job, total cake, with some great people, who were so impressed with me and so desperate to keep me that they waited almost two bloody weeks for me to get a new copy of my birth sertificate, rather than let me go, and now in a day's worth of work I've been basically promoted to full cook from dishwasher to fill in for the kitchen manager while she's away.

Unfortunately, there's still a housing issue to be dealt with, namely, I live in shit. I don't mean that as a metaphor either.

You see, there is a snake. A big snake, some 13 feet long, Burmese Python. It belongs to one of the roommates. In order to feed this snake, basically all he does is sticks it in the bathroom, with some random live rat, rabbit, chicken, whatever was cheap at the pet store, until the thing eats it.

However, this snake is monumentally idiotic, and on two seperate occsions now, has taken a week or more to even find the thing. So then whatever animal basically lives in the fucking bathroom, pissing and shitting all over the floor, and generally lowering the sanitation levels to that of some third world countries. I'd be better off with a dirt floor, at least then there's be something for it to soak into.

Right now there is a very large, diseased rat, with a bad cough and a major case of diarrhea, living in the place I'm supposed to be able to clean myself. Last night it was so foul if I had to use the restroom, I could count on smelling it for the next hour or more even after I'd left the room.

And of course, the roommate in question doesn't really clean it either. Oh usually at some point he puts a half-job into it. LAst time, it was sweeping the rabbit shit into corners, this time it was cleaning the tub and ignoring the giant puddles of waste in the middle of the floor, as well as all the random bottles of shampoos and hair gells and such that are now strewn about the floor because that dumbass snake apparently can't tell a live fucking rat from a bottle of hair spray.

Oh, and of course, one of my bottles of shampoo is right IN one of the puddles of waste, so now I get to buy more because I'm not fucking touching that ever again.

And that's just the bathroom situation. There's also the puke stain that's still on the rug in the front room because of the same roommate's drunken bar pickup. Or the fetid and rank mess that is the kitchen.

How the hell these people can live like this absoluitely astounds the mind. I'm fucking going nuts here. I'm seriously considering calling around to the homeless shelters so I can maybe find a clean place to shower.

ah man that sucks, i had the same problems while looking for jobs with an added lack of experience but i've been lucky in being able to stay at home.

The only bit of advice i can give you is a simple one... lie... not in a bad way but for the low wage "filler" jobs you're looking at try and cut out as much "qualification" as you can. It can be tricky trying to balance that while still given experiences but in my case i've often just said i tried to start a business or some such that didn't work out so i don't have to give references. Hell i've even just said i was unemployed for good chuncks of times i was really in school... for the right kind of job that was more likely to get me an interview

The problem i've found over here with the crapy jobs is that they will take younger with out qualifications beacuse they can pay them less and they will stay longer. My problem is that i don't have enough experience to try for the other kind of jobs so i'm stuck in an odd limbo... my own way out really is to try and find a student job but i'll have to be lucky.

Anyway i'm getting off point... if you're looking for a trash job just to put you on while you look for something better then don't be to afraid to lie and make your self look like the kind of person who isn't expecting high pay and will stick around

Re: the Snake - I think he's trying to feed it too frequently. In college a friend of mine had ball pythons, and it wasn't like he was trying to feed it every day. Use a tall cardboard box (like a tv box or something) to help keep it in a smaller area, makes it easier to find.

Re: Fitty - have you tried temp agencies? More than once I've had to ride out an unemployed streak by working as some random office bitch. I usually gave them a good spook when they got to testing my typing speed before I got put into their system (back in the days when I was routinely 100+wpm) but they gave me jobs anyway even if I was "overqualified".

Good luck, man!

I'm registered with every temp agency in Colorado. I know this because I did so methodically. :)

Have you considered substitute teaching? I did that for a while. As long as you have a college degree and no criminal record, you should be okay.

Degree? Check.
Criminal history? Nada.

I need to look into this.

Indeed. Did you ever hear his version of The Crucifixion?

If there's anything I can do to help on this front just let me know! Have you tried Manpower?

If anything in NC pops up and you need a temp place to stay just let me know. I'm right next to RTP now.

I'm right next to RTP and better than NoName.

Also, while we're at it, if anyone knows of ANYTHING entry level that my wife could do in the Research Triangle Park area, that would be great. Call center or anything. She has a BA in Chemistry and her temp job disappears in February. Plus her plant shuts down for 2 weeks starting next week. :(

Oh, wait...

I have a roof over my head but no work. I'm in the exact same position work wise as you James. Honestly man. If you ever get really stuck, you can always trek to Canadia. You're more than welcome to stay here with me. It would be a honor!

I'm guessing you two already know about RTI International? Anyway, here's a link to their open positions (https://erecruit.rti.org/PRODRECRUIT/,DanaInfo=.agfov6Ex0qIy2s,SSL,SSO=U+index.htm). There's a Chemist 1 position right at the top.

Just go down to your local board of education and pick up an application. Since you can pick and choose where to work, you never have to go back to a class you know is too much for you. The bad days are pretty bad, but the good ones are fantastic.

Also, kids love talking video games at the end of the day.

Also, they love accents.

I've also been doing some looking (at Colorado jobs) for you, Fits; I'll try to post something later.

I'll have to point her at it. It says BS, not BA, but it's worth having her look at.

My ex-wife worked there and she only had a BA at the time. A call to a recruiter at RTI wouldn't go amiss.

I'm dying of curiosity (well...a bit hyperbolic, but it's a well-worn phrase); what does the thread title mean, exactly?

"Jesus Please Us."

I've been scratching my itchy places over that one for a while now. Actually, if you refuse to explain, I can continue scratching said itchy places, for maximum satisfaction! :D

Edit: That's actually a nice explanation (below)! I love grandmas...I miss mine.

How about we compromise. I'll tell you, you keep scratching. Deal?

Anyway, it's an old phrase my mother used to say when she was particularly exasperated about something or someone.

Jesus guys, I'm sorry for your situations. Especially yours, EG. That's terrible. :(

I hope everything turns out better...
