So, I was in my local comic book shop today just browsing around and lo and behold, I had no idea what I wanted to read! So, I'm curious members of the Colony. What should I be reading right now?
I've been mostly looking up as many Batman stories as I can and I think I'm pretty filled up with that universe. I'm looking for something different...and I'm looking to get back into the Marvel universe as well. I'm more or less using this for my own purposes but this can be a general thread for general recommendations as well. So, in general I'm looking too...
- Break into the Marvel universe (which superheroes have the good stories running now?)
- Find general series and anything decent that you might think is worth reading that I should keep a look out for.
- Just any DC related recommendations in general...

Can't go wrong with The Punisher!
Also Watchmen is 12.99 at Costco.

Planet. Hulk.
It's the best canonical story I've read in either Universe. Art's fantastic, too.
edit: Crap, I just realized you're trying to read comics, not old trades. Do what I said anyway.

Old trades or new trades, it's doesn't matter to me. I'm just looking for something to read. :D

Are you only into superhero stuff? There is a world beyond DC and Marvel, where most of the good stuff lies.

Please please please read Planet Hulk. It's almost completely standalone, requires no knowledge of Marvel's Universe other than who the Hulk and maybe the Silver Surfer is, and is like Spartacus if he was huge and green.

Dark Tower (http://www.marvel.com/comics/dark_tower)
It has absolutely nothing to do with the Marvel universe but damn...just....damn.
Sandman
10-02-2008, 01:44 PM
I'm only into Batman at the moment so I just get the main books in the Batman family of titles.
Batman
Detective Chronicles
Robin
Nightwing
Batman & The Outsiders
Trinity
Final Crisis Event Books
Iron Past

Iron Man is good. I've had a Punisher tattoo for years, so obviously I like him too.

Walking Dead is great, and one I pretty much recommend to anyone. Casanova is pretty much my favorite recent comic, and is highly recommended. Fell is a close second. Amazing Joy Buzzards is a fun book, with new issues coming soon. The Boys is one of the few superhero books I read, and I only do it because it is fantastic. Doktor Sleepless is a good beginning to a potentially great story, and the first trade should be out soon.
If you want to check out a good, free, serialized online comic book, you should read FreakAngels (http://www.freakangels.com/). This also has a trade coming out soon.

I'd suggest giving Kick Ass (http://www.marvel.com/catalog/?id=8238) a look. It is only on its 4th issue so you'd be able to catch up quickly.
Basically the premise is a comic book guy decides to become the super hero like all of those that he reads about. Things don't exactly go so well, great art and interesting story thus far.
I believe it is written by Mark Miller, who wrote Civil War.
I guess there is already a deal for a movie based on the comic and they are working on the screenplay alongside of current comic.

Iron Man: Extremis

That's all I have for now. Then again, I am a fan of anything Ellis writes for Marvel. :p

Non-superhero awesomeness:
Local (greatest indie movie never made)
Fables
Jack of Fables
The Walking Dead(ZOMBIIIIIIIIIES)
Criminal
Scalped
SANDMAN
Buffy season 8
Angel after the fall
100 bullets
Y-the last man
Invincible is probably the best superhero book out there. Powers is also great, but not for everyone.

You could try Runaways or Invincible. Walking Dead is awesome, too.

I third Runaways and second House of Mystery (one of, if not the best series going right now, IMO).
I will also add:
Tiny Titans
The Spirit
Skaar: Son of Hulk
I'll post more when they come to me.

If you're willing to do trades, The Preacher was a lot of fun. I also second Fables as something to pick up.

Fables/Jack of Fables is the best comic currently being published. Incredible Hercules (the Marvel one) is the 2nd best.
To be blunt, most of the Marvel universe is shit right now with the fucking Skrulls everywhere. Your best bet is to instead head to the Marvel Adventures line. It's the "kids" line but that's just code for the fun line. You get shit like this (http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w195/Spiegelmaid/TaSu/MAAvengers27015.jpg) and this (http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k237/KirkeNovak/sleep3.jpg) and this (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1103/tennoarashi/xmenfirstclass/XMen_FC_3_0019.jpg) (though technically that's X-Men First Class, MA for the X-Men really) and this (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2399/2382730045_fd3853cabe.jpg).
And yes, this line does the impossible and makes Reed Richards awesome (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3114/2383559002_63c0c0f8ae_b.jpg).

Anything you find, old or new...post it here; always great to hear what others are reading.

Transetropolitan. Nobody mentioned Transmet. How do you look yourself in the mirror? how o you call your self a nerd?

Because as fun as it is, it's Ellis + politics and that almost always ends up being an irritating combination.

How So???
Also write down Fell. Awesome crime comic.
Savok

Because Ellis sometimes gets overexcited with left wing politics.
Fell is awesome. Ellis also penned humanity's great accomplishment bar none, Nextwave.
"It's like Shakespeare, but with lots more punching"...
I really enjoy stuff on the Ultimate Marvel imprint, but always get the feeling I'm in the minority. The Ultimates Vol. 2 is pretty sweet, particularly the Grand Theft America arc. The art work is awesome. Also the new Thunderbolts is fun, has a goodish story and the art work is pretty awesome (although I think only the 'Faith In Monsters' trade is out).

Have you looked at Y the Last Man at all? I'll keep trying to think of good things that haven't been mentioned yet.

You know, someone actually recommended that to me the other day and now it looks like I should really take a look at it.
I've always been interested in that Dark Tower line.

Well, since we're on the topic of Ellis - I've been enjoying Doktor Sleepless. I haven't read the last two or three issues though, so maybe it's gotten out of hand? Anna Mercury is pretty interesting as well. I sometimes wonder how this guys has the time to write so much stuff at once.
Edit: Ah, I can't believe I forgot to mention it in my first post! Madame Xanadu is awesome.

Actually issue #8 of Doktor Sleepless makes sense of just about everything, even his name in a very subtle way.
And yes, it is awesome, if somewhat drowning in Ellis' love of weird technology. I love that shit, but some people don't.

This is basically the list for the OP. There are some missing, but he'll pick 'em up later. In fact, we should have a Comics sticky and put this on it.

I second that. I loved Y the Last Man.
and again I highly suggest taking a look at Kick Ass. Its actually pretty tough to find at the moment, but the first 3 issues are going through reprints so they should be back in stores quite soon.

If you're gonna do that, then replace Preacher with Hitman, as it's the best thing Ennis has ever written by a long way.
Would be nice if DC ever fucking bothered to release the rest of the trades though...

Did someone say Planet Hulk already?
Savok
10-04-2008, 08:58 PM
Yep.
But just to repeat, Planet Hulk is probably the best Hulk story in years. For me it's the best ever, since I love Hulk but hate all the bullshit that surrounds him with Ross and Samson and those other tools.

I was about to recommend The Killer by Matz, but um, seems to be over priced most places online. Probably because Volume 2 is finally about to come out.

I've been pimping the Punisher Max Series to anyone in arms length, just handing off a foot tall stack of trades. This is a very extreme kinda Punisher book but it's neat to see just how truly insane the character is and how he works to justify some of the stuff he does. Plus the guest appearance by Nick Fury is fantastic in the Mother Russia arc.

Definitely Planet Hulk, Sandman, Preacher and Transmetropolitan but a couple of good ones I haven't seen mentioned yet are DMZ and Alias. Look into Hack/Slash if you like classic slasher movies as well.
