Got a credit card in my hand. Where do I go?

Not taking any sort of donations yet. The details and necessity of such has yet to be hashed out.

This was one of my first thoughts but apparently the first 6 months are taken care of.
The silly admins don't want our money yet :).

Yeah, the seven managers have paid out of their own pockets for 6 months of hosting (at current levels, if we have to go up that may change) and the various software run on this site.
Donations will be coming, but we wanted to show good faith to the community by paying the initial cost out of our own pockets.

They stated they are covering the first 6 months of costs, so donations are not needed yet. I am sure they will let us know when they are needed.
Do not ask me who "they" are. :p
EDIT: WTF? Three replies before I get mine hammered out? Douches, the lot of you.

So long as you don't do any of that "colored name" and "secret forum" crap when the time comes.
The childish cliquishness and elitism that mess spawned was a serious drain on my enjoyment of the site.

We are very anti-color at the moment, so no worries.

I can give you my personal paypal account and I promise that I'll give it to the site later. :p
I'm joking, of course. Out of curiosity, will there eventually be a call for more mods, or do you guys have it covered?

I actually did know, just making fun of my over-use of they. Still, a good list to have in this thread.

Dude, it seems like there are a hell of a lot of things that drain your enjoyment.

Actually there is one way you can donate to us: By Spreading the Word. More than money at the moment we want your referrals. Tell your friends, tell your family. If you have contacts in the industry tell them about us. Just spread the word.

Don't worry, one of the core tenets of this site's creation was to never institute a "color caste" system, and to be entirely transparent where all money donated to the site heads.
Also! Spreading the word is EXACTLY the sort of payment we'd want at this point in time.

I know the mods have made it clear that they want to make donation money and what it gets used for transparent to those who donate. When the time does come for taking donations, you could always go the Donation Derby (http://catandgirl.com/dderby/index.php) route, if you want to be creative about it.

I'm accepting personal donations for two things:
1. A PS3
2. A trip to Scotland.
PM me for details! :)

there was a board i used to be on that had a chart of how much things cost for an entire year, broken down by month, and then it had a list of everyone who donated and how much, and the months filled in as the donations came in.
nice and public, and if you dont see your name, you can call it out. pretty hard to pocket money when its all up front like that. and most places dont do that, hence why i rarely donate to anything that doesn't benefit the welfare of boobies.

Two things I made crystal clear from the offset in the formative stages of CoG were transparency and accountability. Two things I will fight for till my last breath.

Around CoG pants are optional as a right, not just a subscriber privilege.

I'll still donate. I don't require no colors to want to support a well run site.

I know you wouldn't. But figuring a $1 a member. :p
While I'm glad we're not going to have the "color caste" system here, I did very much like that people at EvAv could (and did) donate to turn someone else orange - I was the recipient of that a couple times, and it was awesome.
So some sort of perk for donating that you can give to someone else would be very cool.
Fear not. When CoG needs money a strange Scottish man will break into your home and confiscate your possessions.
He may also have his way with your women. If so, you get a special user color!

First: Glad to see Ox is here.
Second: I too want to donate.
Third: I stealth-subbed a lot at EvAv, and kinda liked it. I don't think I ever let on that I did, but there was something nice about doing for another.
Fourth: I would totally donate to get fits a PS3. We should do it.

I know I would be open to suggestions of perks. A subscriber forum could be made, however that can somewhat fracture the idea of having a "community" where everyone can see everything.

Information about donations, etc will appear in the coming months. We appreciate the enthusiasm, but since it's the fall rush, why don't you all buy some games to play?
We still have some decisions to make about how to fund the site down the road. If we can pay for server costs through donations, great. We might do some limited ad integration. We may whore ourselves out on the streets of Seattle come PAX '09.
Personally, I'm of the mind that the site can do something small for people who donate, be it a small badge added to their profile or perhaps something... special. Money will not buy yourself a pretty username or access to a secret forum, and that's not going to change on our watch.

Perks - good.
Subscriber forum - bad.
Elitism would be my chief concern.
That said, there's no reason perks couldn't be arranged for those who subscribe (be it for themselves or for others). I'll let the first person to donare $100 lift my kilt and answer the question! :)

Oh come on now. You trying to break Mag's bank account? You know he's got spiders to kill. That costs money.

I think Mike's idea of badges is an excellent one. It could be like the other, earlier Evil Avatar exodus' site: Gamers with Jobs (link to the badge information (http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/41113)). I think they have 6 icons, each of which signifies the number of times you've donated (and not the amount you've donated).

Agreed, and a little star (cog) beside the icon if you donated for someone else.

Hmmmm... So we can't see the yellows? Means I'll have to check more profiles for birth dates. I'll live.
I like the idea of little badges, but that's just as bad as colored names. I would have said blogs being a perk but they'd have blood if you took that away now. :o

Yeah, a badge would signify some level of difference from user to user, but we won't cripple a user's account (PM limits, access to special forums) just because they don't cough up some scratch.
We'll come up with something. This is loooooww priority at the moment.
PS- We just enabled custom titles for everyone with 25+ posts.

Well, at this point we're a ways off from deciding this kind of thing. We've paid to beyond the new year, so only if we hit the limits of the server could I see us having to put extra bling in before the 6 month period is over.
We do really appreciate that you guys want to support us though and I'm sure it will be coming, just be patient.

I never did figure out who kept reupping me. I was actually kind of mixed about it, honestly, because on the one hand, I'd actually wanted to leave several times but always felt guilty becasue someone had spent the cash to make me a subscriber.
On the other hand, knowing how much my presence enraged Riley was absolutely delicious, and watching him continue to froth and screech in my general direction for over a year despite my completely ignoring him was a kind of pathetic hilarity you seldom get to experience in life.
