View Full Version : Battlefield 2
Wackman noted on IRC that we should all have a holiday BF2 session. No time to waste, CoG Must play! load up soon, because the date is the 20th a Saturday, we can always change it to work with peoples scheduals better.

So long as Strike at Karkand is our map of play, I am game. It's probably the only one I remember.
Everyone post your stats page if you still have it. We should also decide on maps and a method of communication.

It would be good to see a nice group get together to take on some of the more dedicated BF2 players. Last time I installed this game it didn't end pretty and I had a hard time switching out of the "run and gun" first person shooting that TF2 and other recent games have occupied my time.

If I can find the time, I'd like to dust off this game and my Sidewinder joystick :)

My playtime pales in comparison to all of yours. Though, I'll need to reinstall/repatch this. Anyone know how well it runs in Vista64?
No love for BF2142?
It was alright, but didn't quite have that same feel. I'd have to reinstall that too.
No love for BF2142?
Maybe soon after, I'm not ruling out 2142 but the weekend after the 27th may be hard to get on for some people. I'd have to say in January would be the best.

I wonder if BF2 can be gotten cheap? I enjoyed the demo, but didn't have a capable machine at the time...

Quite cheap, if you go vanilla BF2.
Amazon has it for $7.99. (http://www.amazon.com/Battlefield-2-Pc/dp/B0006SL93I/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1229120021&sr=8-1)or $29.99 for the Complete Collection box. BF2142 was better, for me. But I'm down to play BF2.
Desert Combat was the best, but the 1942 engine is just too dated. BF2 is the next best thing for me.

Ok guys... latest patch for BF2 is 1.41.
Latest patch for BF 2142 is 1.5. Go get 'em!
So if anyone is interested we will be doing some practice rounds tomorrow (Saturday) so be sure to install BF2 very soon.

I can't get to my copy of BF2 until maybe halfway through the coming week and have other plans today, but apart from that I think I would like to join you guys next week!

Here is my problem: No matter what I seem to do, Battlefield 2 refuses to run on my system. Install, reinstall, uninstall, reinstall. INI tweaks, shortcut commands... nothing seems to make this game run. I have had it on my system for a long time, and while I no longer have the powerhouse of PC gaming like I did four years ago, I should be able to run Battlefield 2 without a hitch (2142 runs great!).
The game will launch and run fine after the initial install, but after that? Forget it. It hangs at random loading screens, blue screens my system (I had not seen a BSoD in ages). Very odd. I would point blame at something like my video card causing issues but no other game has problems.
I have found no solutions to this problem, and it is kind of a hard problem to explain since it seems quite random. Poo. BF2 is great too, though I personally always enjoyed 2142 a bit more.

Applet to change FoV on fly for people forcing the game into a widescreen mode via the commandline. (http://imk.cx/pc/widescreenfixer/)
Get version 1.32, btw.
EA Downloader (http://na.llnet.cdn.ea.com/u/f/eaonline/eadm/eadm-installer.exe) link for people who got the expansions off of EA's now defunct service and need to re-download them, thanks to the always helpful Ghostbear.
Played around with built-in voicecomm tonight, people couldn't hear each other. Could have been the server we were on. I was getting the nice green speaker so my client thought it was working at least. Maybe we go with vent/ts instead?
Only other problem I had tonight is that it is registering my throttle in reverse.
My stats (http://bf2s.com/player/43822209/). I don't want to hear anything, I know they suck and that is mostly because I died way too often learning to fly copters. :)

Eff you (http://bf2s.com/player/44078156/) :p
edit: Thank GOODNESS it doesn't track teamkills. I and a RL friend were total monsters. Edit; fuck, it does. I must not have always played on ranked servers, though.

I'm still shocked that no one here ever bothered with playing commander... I thought it was one of the coolest aspects of the game to have someone leading the troops into battle, and it's fairly crucial to have a competent one to point out enemies and lay out arty strikes.
So I will take the commander position for our team. Anyone else have ideas on map choices? And as RandoM51 mentioned, voice comm sucks on BF2 so another method of communication might be required.

We're gonna have to do Teamspeak/Vent. Not a big deal, should work out much better anyways since we may have more than 6 people in our unit (and max for a squad is 6).

Someone different than me is going to have to host it then. Port forwarding is made impossible by the UVerse Router-Modem.
Edit: Unless we all want to use VPN just for VoIP.
Ah it works now, I'm hosting Ventrilo. I'm not worried about a Pass for now.

I played commander a little. I wasn't great at it, and let better commanders take the job. Most of my hours in BF2 were spent on a private server, playing with the same group of people for years. I agree that a good commander can make a huge difference.

I've played Commander on 2142. Every time I did, we won, so I must have been doing ok. It was really fun.

It is getting harder for me to hold out on buying BF2 up again. Assuming it is a decent price I will definitely get it tomorrow.
EDIT: I don't know if I can resist a 10$ Battlefield 2...

I really loved this game, but I always had a problem.
It would find like 3 servers TOTAL.
It meant that I could never actually play with real people, which sucked.
Any ideas as to how I could fix this?

Have you updated to the latest patch? That is about the only thing I could think of that would cause a problem...

I just tried updating with the big patch again, and it worked.
Did yesterday fall through? I ended up pretty busy, I hope I didn't miss out.

No one showed up at all. I sat around IRC and Steam waiting for a msg but I got nothing.
Oh well maybe we'll try another time.
