View Full Version : Weekend Gaming - What's in your Queue?

So on the twelfth day of December, there was much rejoicing in the Purpyll household <cue loud orchestral music here>, as the celebration has begun. The end of the tyranny of the school semester has unofficially ended. Silence from the clikity clak from the keys to form another overly wrought (very much like this scenario) papers that are required so Purpyll can graduate next year and be employable once again. Free from the oppression of paper writing. Icons of papers begone, books banned to the basement. I am a free Nikolai Purpyll. Ladies and Gentleman, welcome to my version of nirvana. All gaming all the time. Or what's more normally called the Weekend.

With the evil tyranny finally overthrown, I now can work on my small but significant to me, backlog. I plan on sitting down in my gaming spot on my futon and not move until...I might have to move next Wednesday so maybe by then. Until then, i've left instructions how to leave some food and water so I don't die or something. As to what i'll be playing:

Fallout 3- My poor Pip Boy has sat unopened since it's arrival. It's time to grab my lunchbox, place the Pip Boy bobble head in it's proper place and begin this epic game.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts- I love the BK series. Circuit City finally delivered my "pre-order" which I placed over two months ago. I kept obsessively looking at the website to see if my order shipped, waiting not so patiently to play. This was the type of game I thought I could play during the semester, pick up play some then put down. Now it will serve that purpose as I go through various gaming itches that will be scratched.

Mirror's Edge-Before all else I need to finish this off. Unfortunately, I had to put this aside while I decided to finish off papers so I can graduate in May. Hopefully I won't bust the controller as I try to finish this game. GoW style of play...FTW!

Left4Dead-Ok Spigot, my spurned gaming partner. Let's go kill some Zombies. And do lots of running. I haven't forgotten you Rini. I'm ready for my 2am gaming with the west coast gaming friend. I'll play with anyone...just keep in mind I truly do suck at this game.

Persona 3: FES-I'm a bit late to the loving Persona party. I have P4 with the lovely artbook too. But with P3 I get to use my new gaming corner, with my new monitor, Tritton head phones so now ADD and I can game together as she plays Fable 2. All credit for this awesome gaming corner goes to Kelegacy.

Castlevania: OoE/Chrono Trigger/Ratchet and Clank: SM- Not leaving out the handhelds or better known as how I watch tv. Ratchet and Clank is the beginning for me to work on my Gamefly backlog. Castlevania and Chrono trigger...self explanatory. They are simply great games.

The rest: Tomb Raider Underworld- I am saving this when I can spend and focus more time on enjoying it. It's my own Dom Perignon which needs to be savored. Little Big Planet may see some game time. GoW 2...I need to find what the other NoW's are doing now. Have they all left to play L4D?

The fall season of gaming is over, since PoP has been released and now it's hibernation. Time for catch up? Maybe some Xmas list writing of what you want for the present giving holiday? Or maybe just go the Kelegacy route and haunt the bargain bins at various electronic stores to find your next gaming outlet. So what are you PLAYING?

I'm going away, so It will be just me, the GF and my DS and Phantom Hourglass.

Oh, and Purple, prepare to not see daylight again when starting F3. It will be Monday before you know it.

Probably some Gears of War 2, and CoD 4 online.

Might sit down and play a little Red Alert 3 on my 360 too.

Get my Death Knight the final step to 80, and then maybe try out L4D again, to try and see what all the fuss is about. Also I may mess about on Shadowrun.

L4D - Hopefully playing with everyone who are just getting to the party

The Darkness - I am enjoying this but rarely play due to always being on L4D

Lost Odyssey - If I somehow finish The Darkness, this is next in my backlog.

Most of the weekend will be spent playing the "buying christimas presents" game :(

I'll try to get time for some Prince of Persia, and I might pick up Left 4 Dead since a friend of mine who just bought a 360 wants to play co-op with me. I actually went back to Rainbow 6 Vegas and played some co-op with my friend. That was actually some great fun.

I beat Mirror's Edge this week so I started PoP last night. Very pretty game, I'm already a bit bored by the combat (and I've fought what...6 people/things?). I'll be playing that this weekend before sending both back to Gamefly and canceling my subscription for the year.

I also really want to continue playing Two Worlds and Conan, but it all depends on how much PoP grows on me.

Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts-I've gotten really hooked since I finally found some decent vehicle parts (I was at that part that seems present in all upgrade games: I needed upgrades to get access to better parts to beat the challenges, but I needed to beat the challenges to get the upgrades to get access to better parts).

Far Cry 2-Only scratched the surface and want to dig deeper. Now I have time to actually devote to gaming as I don't have a ton of school work all at once.

I'm still feeling mostly crappy, so I'm not sure. My wife and I may head out to the ohGr concert Saturday if we're both feeling up to it, so that would be pretty nice.

As far as gaming, I'll be trying to get more time in with Valkyria Chronicles and WipEout HD, and maybe start Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow, but that's about it. Bleh, I need to get better.

I'm backlogging it through some games,

Viva Pinata
Oblivion
Dead Space
and then hopefully some Gears 2 and Fallout 3.

Plus resisting the urge to purchase either L4D or COD5

Quite a bit, and I don't think I'll get to much of it. But oh well, it's still there.

Left 4 Dead (PC) - Really enjoying co-op'ing this with my coworkers, helping each other get achievements and gradually cranking up the difficulty. Haven't even tried VS yet, so there's a whole other side of it waiting for me.

Fallout 3 (PC) - Much like I did with Oblivion, I find myself almost scared to start it up, knowing how many hours will vanish. Plus, since the GECK just came out, the mods will be arriving soon.

World of Goo (Wii) - This game deserves to be finished, and so I shall try to do so. I'm stunned at how polished and entertaining a product those two guys made here.

Prince of Persia (PC) - Just started this. My God is it gorgeous. I don't mind the "no death" design at all, the platforming is just as engaging as it ever was, the combos are lots of fun to play with in combat, and the dialogue between the Prince and Elika is well written and well acted. By the way, Toys R' Us.com is selling the PC version for $30 with free shipping (http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3403219). If you have the hardware for it, this is a stupidly good deal. Get it.

There are other things, but I think that's all I realistically have a chance of even booting up. Christmas break is going to involve a lot of playing catch-up.

I'm finally in the Stanley Cup Finals! So I'll be putting more time into NHL09...but since I now have a DS, I'll be spending time in St. Mystere and traveling through time with my frog-like knight friend, Bill.*

*yes, naming him 'Frog' felt insulting. 'Bill' is a much more apt name. :D

More of The Witcher. This game just keeps getting bigger and bigger!

Probably a little bit of Two Worlds when I just want to wander around and whack crap.

Probably a mission or two in Startopia when I get tired of RPG's.

And I'm going to try to get a little ways into Company of Heroes for that RTS fix.

Finished up "The Sun Also Rises" and I'm reading a book of "true" biker stories by Ralph 'Sonny' Barger of The Hells Angels: "Ridin' High, Livin' Free". Makes me want to go kick some ass in Duvall! :p

I'm finally done with finals so I'm really looking forward to sitting down and getting some good play time in for the first time in forever this weekend. My backlog currently consists of Dead Space, Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3, World of Goo, Civ Rev, Viva Pinata: TIP, and Far Cry 2.

Dead Space is first up though. I'm about an hour an a half in right now, so I'm hoping to finish it off this weekend and maybe move on to Far Cry 2. I also have a game of Fallout 3 that's about 5 hours in, but I think I'm going to put that one to the side for now and wait for some good mods.

I predict more L4D with the usual crew as well as another night of TF2 since we had another server mishap that borked the server for the majority of the night.

Other than that, maybe play some more Battlefield: Bad Company and continue to trek through Star Ocean: Second Star Story.

Tales of Vesperia _ Jeez I hate starting up in the middle of an RPG I have not played in a while. It takes me at least an hour to get my head wrapped around everything.

WOW _ Maybe. I have not decided if I want to pick up Wrath and give it a go or not.

Heading down to Seattle tonight and then off to Hawaii for 10 days :) :):)....:)

So...I've stocked up on DS games:

Chrono Trigger DS
Final Fantasy I & II (GBA)
Sonic Chronicles
Pokemon Diamond

Civilization Revolution
Ninja Town
Geometry Wars: Galaxies

Yes, I know that's a lot of RPG's. I've borrowed most and only bought FF I&II. I'm hoping at least one of those RPG's holds my attention for the flights.

Civ: Rev is my best handheld purchase of the year :)

Ninja Town is still in the wrapper, but I'm really looking forward to it.

Geometry Wars is just great for those moments you want to kill a little time.

I'm thinking of picking up one more action/platformer today...anyone have any suggestions? I was looking at Castlevania: OO, but I'm turned away by the supposed difficulty of that title.

I really loved Metroid: Fusion on the GBA, anything along those lines for the DS?

Spigot
12-12-2008, 10:45 AM
biosc, the closest you'll get to 2D Metroid on the DS are the various Castlevanias. OoE is good but it is hard. Portrait of Ruin and Dawn of Sorrow were both a little easier.

Ok. Let's see what I'll be playing this weekend.

Persona 4: Dear god, I adore this game... and I've barely started it. All I know is that it is full of a pile of tiny tweaks to the Persona 3 formula and those subtle changes are making me love P4 to death. It also helps that the story is a little tighter, at least in the introductory parts of the game. Plus the setting makes it feel like I'm playing a JRPG set in my town :)

Valkyria Chronicles: I got back to work on this over the past week and it's one of those games that make me wonder WHY I stopped playing it. That said, some of the missions are HARD. Stupid Sylvaria and her Gatling lance.

Chrono Trigger DS: I haven't had a chance to play this very much over the past week, but it's still as awesome as always.

PoP (360): I'm adoring this game. Sure, it's not hard, per se, but it's damned fun and the banter between Elika and the Prince is some of the best dialogue in a game that I've heard in a LONG time. The only problem is that once I figured out who the Prince sounds like It's the same voice actor who did Nathan Drake from Drake's Fortune I can't stop picturing him as that character instead of The Prince. Sigh.

I might get up to some L4D if I get some invites. If you see me on the 360, toss me an invite and I'll do my best to join. Just don't do it on Expert or anything crazy :)

Other than this stuff, I've got to work over the weekend (boo) after spending most of this week home sick with some cold thing. I tried to go into work during the week but they chased me around with Purell and Lysol wipes, so bugger them.

My son has also been puking since about 5am today, so I'm wiped. Blah. Good times.

Oh, I'll also be working on my mage in WoW. Almost 68. I'm the slowest leveller in history.

I'd like to get in some Left 4 Dead tonight with Coggers. I had a blast last night, even though I got consistently slaughtered. I have just as much fun losing in L4D as I do winning.

Sunday I think I'm going to quest through my last level in Lich King. I hit 79 last week and I'm looking forward to checking out Sholozar Basin.

Probably the usual: Gears 2 and L4D. Maybe I'll mix it up with some LBP, but it's not likely because it's hard to pry me away from the other two. My friends keep trying to get me to play MGO, but I never want to take the plunge.

My friends keep trying to get me to play MGO, but I never want to take the plunge.

Who are these friends and can I add them to my PS list? :D Seriously, I really think MGO has the potential to be a really great game. I just need to have some regular go-to friends who are interested in playing it the right way: strategy, tactics, and thoughtful planning.

Whenever I get in a game, people are playing it as if it were Halo - and it just doesn't work that way.

Quite frankly, I'm stuck playing Fallout 3. I'm on a tight budget right now, so I really can't afford to buy any new games for a while. Thankfully, there's so much stuff to do in Fallout, this game will last me for a very long time. Usually, I buy a game, and am finished with it inside two weeks. Not so for Fallout.

I'm on Chapter 7 (of 10) in Dark Sector, so I'll be finishing that up. I like this game a lot. It's not amazing, but its really fun and it looks like it won't overstay its welcome.

After that, I'm not sure what will grab my interest with the mountain of options I have before me. I started Prince of Persia last night, but after an hour it isn't really grabbing me like the last gen trilogy did. Chrono Trigger[b] should be arriving today from Gamefly as well.

There is a good chance I'll return to [b]Last Remnant now that I have an idea where I'm supposed to go next.

After that it's a toss up between a bunch cheap games incoming: Conan, Army of Two, Time Shift, Infinite Undiscovery, Condemned 2, etc.

But first thing I have to do is grade the mountain of essays I'm collecting this afternoon. That will probably eat up the majority of my Saturday and Sunday morning. Ugh.

OoE is indeed the hardest Castlevania I've played, but that's how I like it. People bash it for the bosses being brutally hard, but I say, "Hello! That's why they're called 'bosses'!" However, I miss Soma Cruz and soul hunting. That's why Dawn of Sorrow and OoE are tied for "Best Games I've Played On My DS". Portrait of Ruin was great too.

Really? I thought it was quite close to the same feeling I got from Sands Of Time. That same sense of wonder and whimsy is there and the banter is awesome. It's pretty much taken out the combat (yay) and focused on the environment, which is what I've been screaming for since Sands Of Time.

I call it Prince Of Okami :)Only consolation I can offer about the puking is...at least he's a specialist zombie instead of just a run of the mill one...Boomer's have their role too :)You win :)

Yeah, it was the perfect length, I think. I could have kept playing, but it ended and I was really really satisfied.

It's strange because the game doesn't do anything new besides using a different weapon. Yet, it drew me in despite drawing heavily from other games. I think the polish the game received made it stick out for me and become one of my favorite action games of the year. I got my extra copy in the mail and will be wrapping it up for my cousin's boyfriend for xmas. I'm also buying him Crackdown for cheap (my brother drew his name to buy for this year but my brother has a new baby and is also struggling financially. So I figured I'd pick up the presents--via some great deals--and take a burden off him).

From what I've heard, the combat is pretty underwhelming. Ubisoft needs to mute it entirely or up the volume (without bringing out the Warrior Within all of us) of the fighting in future installments of the new Prince of Persia series.

Oh, and Avnovice, I'm sorry about your tale of delayed shipments. :o

From what I've heard, the combat is pretty underwhelming. I think it's just fine. The focus of the game isn't combat, so they use it very, VERY sparingly. You only ever fight one monster/boss at a time and they're not the frustrating gang-bangs of the previous trilogy. Compared to how badly combat was implemented in a game like Mirror's Edge, I'd rather have it be as simple as it is in PoP so I'm not cursing at the screen all day.

I'm interested to see if Eternalgamer and Kel's take on PoP changes or not. I'm absolutely adoring the game, so maybe this will be like Lost Odyssey. The holy trinity of CoG does not always agree!

Spigot, I think PoP has a LOT of potential. I've only played an hour or so, up to the unleashing of you know what. Girlfriend was yelling at me last night to rub her feet or something (pregnant ladies, very needy) so I had to quit. But I enjoyed what I played thus far. It's a breathtaking game. I just wasn't thrown on my ass like I was with PoP: SoT 5 years ago. Still, it looks to be a good one.

I hope to play as much as I can before I cancel my Gamefly subscription and send it back. I think I have 6 days, but really this weekend will be the biggest chance for me to play it. I'd like to play around with Mirror's Edge's time trial a bit more but I'm in a rush and I can't be bothered! Sucks, but I'll grab ME cheap a year down the road or so and be able to enjoy its extras more.

^^ I agree with Spigot, the combat hasn't bothered me at all so far. Fights are rare, very cinematic in nature, the combo system is a lot of fun to play with, and each encounter feels like it has some weight in the story and adds to the experience. I find myself neither wishing there was more combat nor thinking "Oh God, not again" when I walk towards a fight.

Certainly you can argue that by the time the previous trilogy got to Two Thrones, they'd made a deeper and more satisfying combat system, but for what this is, I have no problems with it.

I just noticed that both you and EG were grousing about it a bit and I was curious why! As for not being knocked on your butt, just think about how many games you've played in the last 5 years. This one isn't a huge leap forward, but from what I've played of it, it really seems to recapture the spirit of Sands Of Time that the sequels fell far short of. There's a playfulness about it that you just don't find in a lot of games these days.

I will admit that prior to the game's release, I wasn't excited about the game at all. It looked pretty but I was just going to get it sometime in the new year. Since I hadn't been following the game and had only really seen the one trailer, I didn't know any of the new tweaks to the gameplay or refocus on pure platforming/puzzle solving. I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised when I grabbed it and that it hasn't disappointed me yet, though the stupid gears in the windmill came close...

I hear ya. I was so glad to get that game out of my 360 and out of my house, but I was just watching the DLC trailer today and I realized just how much I loved the game when it wasn't pissing me off. I'll buy it for cheap in the new year for my collection, but I don't want to see it for a while :)

I wish that I could rewrite time and just expunge Warrior Within from history and let the series go from Sands Of Time to The Two Thrones. I really liked the latter, but they had steered the series too much towards combat by that time. Given that the series is really all about the environment as your main enemy, I'm glad that the combat has been dialed waaaay down this go-round. It might not be this uber-challenging game that everyone seems to demand at every turn, but it's FUN... and that's good enough for me.

I agree with Spigot. You want Castlevania: OoE. Don't be scared away by the slight increase in difficulty. It's forgiving in the sense you can run back and save plenty. The warp points make it very easy to go back to town to save. This allows easy leveling up. So yes, it's more difficult but not Contra like harder.

There's really nothing like Metroid Fusion on the DS. I would have hoped we'd see a 2D DS Metroid game by now. If you're up for something a little different, and a little tougher, Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia is a must-buy.

If you and I play more Horde together soon (or even L4D), I'm sure you'll meet one of them, and you guys can discuss your love for MGO! I'd be happy to introduce you. Like I said, they're always trying to get me to play, so I'm sure you would be welcome. :)

Well I tried to finish off Mirror's Edge last night to no avail. I'm finally bored with it. I just can't motivate myself to do either another wall jump or some long ass jump that seems impossible. This game needed save anywhere. I would of still been playing if it had that. I think Fits said it in another thread about having so little time and you want to maximize the amount of fun while playing. That's when I realized it's time to put down the controller. So maybe another time i'll rent it to finish.

I finally played a fun game which it's been a while...I tried L4D...just single player so I could get used to the game. All I can say is WOW. I can't believe the realistic looks on that game, especially the four characters. I want to change my vote in "Best visual". Now that I played this...hands down...I wish I had a PC that could run it properly. I can't imagine how this would on there. The game even in just single player is fun. For a game that is meant to be played with others, I think I had more fun in my 1 hour campaign than I was having with ME the last 4 hours. I beat the game in little over an hour and if that's all I did with it I think it would be worth it. I can't believe this might be my GOTY. Now i'll look for others to play with. This game is beyond awesome...

I hear ya, Purple. I think that's why I'm enjoying Prince Of Persia so much right now. I've had to put up with a few really frustrating games over the past month or two that were good enough to finish but maddening in a few spots. Prince Of Persia is just pure fun. It's as difficult as I want it to be (ie. if I feel the need to search out every last light seed).

L4D is pretty mindless in that way too. I'm assuming you just beat one movie in an hour, right? Not all 4. It was taking me about an hour per 'movie' on Normal. If you see me on tonight, toss me an invite. My kids are still working on perfecting their Boomer impressions, so sleep has been in short supply around Casa Del Spig, but I might be up for some zombie killing either tonight or tomorrow.

I spent all of last night on COG and chatting with friends, so today I need to get down to some gaming. Here's what is on my list for this weekend:

Civilization Revolution - I love this game so far. I've already won three matches, and I'm going to play a few more before sending this back to Gamefly. This game has convinced me that I need to buy Civ 4 in a few months when I've cleared up more of my backlog. I love this version, but I miss a lot of the depth of the PC Civ games.

Earth Defense Force 2017 - The other title that Gamefly sent me, instead of Gears of War 2 (grr). I've heard it's a lot of fun and pretty short, but I'll play through it once or twice before sending it back.

I Fluid - I played a few levels of this last weekend and really enjoyed it. I've never played a game before in which I had to dodge chocolate and make daring leaps over hot cakes to avoid being sizzled to death. This game is quirky, fun, and very beautiful. The graphics are nearly photorealistic, since all of the textures are real photos mapped to 3D objects. The physics are fun as well, although I wish that the droplet (the thing you control) wasn't so jumpy.

Sam and Max Season 1 - I'm almost done with the first episode, and so far it is hilarious. I'm looking forward to finishing up the first episode and playing through the second.

Left 4 Dead - I've been away from this game for too long. It's time to get back to slaying zombies!

Rez HD - I'm determined to unlock and then beat the 5th level this weekend.

Spellforce 2 - I bought this on Steam last weekend and have yet to play it. I'd like to at least check it out this weekend, even if I don't end up spending much time with it.

Whew, that's quite the list! I could also end up playing Eets, Dead Space, or Fable 2.

Now that I have (for the most part) finished all of my work, I probably won’t be playing much. I might pop into HOME every now and then, and, given its resurgence here at CoG, I may slip Diamond or Pearl back into my DS.

Other than that, I’ve got plenty of reading to do, so it should be a fairly quiet weekend.

You are correct good sir. I finished ONE movie. Dear god...all 4? Only in my hallucinatory dreams...I was just so impressed with the game on so many levels. One, it looked amazing. I mean, how come other developers can't have people look that real? Ok, they look real to me...still they looked damn good. Two, I have never seen AI bots play so well. Those bots were the reason I made it. I was killed by a Tank 3 times...I bothered the witch...ok, lesson learned there...and damn I was vomited on so many times I could believe I was Spigot with his kids ;). Three, the length was just right. I don't care if it's not long, it was fun from the minute it started to the very end. I want more games to be that way. Playable and fun...

@Mags: Yeah Civ Rev is "shallow" obviously compared to the PC version of Civs. which I know from reading up on it. But due to all the fun on Civ Rev has made me want to try Civs on the PC. I know it's way more in depth but I think I would be intrigued by it.

I played some Banjo-Kazooie earlier...this game owns me. My OCD is already kicking in wanting to find all the notes...win all the trophies...not going to happen but i'll have some fun cursing my way to get them :). I love the vehicle creation and the vehicle focus. I had to walk away since I wanted to let ADD have her game time...

And with that transfer of gaming, I went to play Persona 3. I'm not sure how I missed this series...but i'm glad i'm playing it now. I love the outrageous plot and "mystery" of the goings on. Reminds me of .Hack due to the plot.

The Civilization games on the PC are definitely slower paced than the console versions, and with a lot more depth. Still, they ease you into it. You start off small and go from there. I'm sure you could pick up on it if you gave it a go.

I'd be really happy if you picked up Civ 4 and we could play it together. :)

I know, talk about jumping in the deep end!

I had a look at Tactics advance 2, but I was a little gun shy after being really disappointed in the original. To be fair, I had picked that up when I was deep into Advance Wars, so maybe it was just a different kind of game than what I was expecting, so it may be something I look at later on. I go through phases when I love the turn based strategy, usually just after the release of one of the Advance Wars series.

The other reason I grabbed it was that it seems to get universal praise and I know how hard it can be to grab these games even a month or so after they're released. I figured, worst case, I'd give it a go and if I didn't like it, I could pass it on to one of about half a dozen people who would be more than happy with it.

After a long Friday night, apparently I will be playing a lot of Titan's Quest: Immortal Throne. Thanks to all the people here who recommended it (memory suggests the suggestions were sprinkled through the "Hinterland" thread), it was a no-brainer when it was available on Steam for $10.

If the mood strikes me, I might hit some TF2, but my computer was "jumpy" when I was trying to play with the crew on Friday and it makes for a frustrating experience. Maybe I'll actually get around to HL2 that I got with the Orange Box last Xmas. Or, the Witcher, which I haven't gotten around to installing but have heard is fun.

On the Wii, I hope to "play" Wii Fit again, but I know I will be playing Boom Blox, which I just borrowed from the library. Damn, the library is an awesome, awesome place.

For some reason I have a love/hate relationship with PoP. I think it's beautiful as heck, and the platforming is fun, but I also think the platforming can be bland as well. You really don't need to do very much, a few button presses and the prince does everything on his own. I'm playing, but it sort of feels like I'm not sometimes as well. However, I still think the platforming is well done, especially because it can be so fast.

Yet, my second to third hour of excitement has been mostly diminished now. The game hasn't become bad, it just hasn't kept my attention. The hooks have slipped out of me. It's a great game, but I don't think it is one I can play from beginning to end without putting playing other games in between. I can't quite place it, but it's almost reminiscent of the occasional waves of boredom I felt with Assassin's Creed. Both have that playing-yet-not-playing feeling at times (because of the fluidity/complexity of the animation and actions, yet requiring only a single button press).

I don't know. I think the game is fun, but I wouldn't put it on my best games lists this year. For art direction, yes. DEFINITELY. But the gameplay is evoking almost the EXACT same feelings I had with Assassin's Creed. I love it, then I just like it, then I'm bored, then I'm liking it for a bit, then I'm bored for some more time. It's really strange.

Well, thankfully I haven't come down off of my PoP high like you have, Kel. I just unlocked my 3rd power and the game is as refreshing and fun as it was when I started it. I like the fact that, unlike in Assassin's Creed, you're not just doing the same 4 things over and over again. Well, I guess you kind of are, but they're actually fun.

I don't know. I was talking to Agentgray about Mirror's Edge tonight and I realized that I came to PoP right after having slogged through ME and PoP is just such a refreshing burst of sunshine that I'm happy whenever I play it. It's one of the first games in a while where I'm not alternately loving it and wanting to put my controller through the screen.

I also love the characters, so that helps.

And Variable, FFTA2 is a lovely game. It's not going to redefine the SRPG genre and it's not FFT, but I was finishing up War of the Lions on my PSP around the same time I started playing FFTA2 and I have to say that there were a lot of things on the gameplay front that really showed how dated FFT was. That said, the story is laughable in FFTA2, which is a shame as I really liked the story in the first FFTA game.

And most of that stuff was also in the original FFTA. That's what irks me. Whenever you're producing a sequel to a game, I'd like to see the design take a step forward. I'd like to see the addition of new and interesting mechanics. Square-Enix took the foundation provided by FFTA, and, in my opinion, took several steps back.

I beat Mirror's Edge and then the following night I started PoP. So I was in the same boat. But I liked Mirror's Edge a lot, it just had some rough spots that messed up the flow of the game. It was the perfect rental. I will play through the game again someday, when the price drops enough for me to want to buy it. I would give it a solid 8/10 and recommend it because of how much it's so different from other games.

PoP is still fun, but I go through waves. I just unlocked my 3rd power as well (like 3 minutes ago, paused to check my email). Great title, another solid 8/10, and something really special in the visual department all around. Exilharating gameplay sometimes, but I think my feelings change when I have to go back and collect light seeds. Going through an area once to purge is is one thing, having to retrace my steps to collect seeds is another.

And I just realized you could teleport. How the hell did I miss that for so long. I think a big part of my boredom was having to run through areas all over again to get where you wanted to go. It wasn't until I sat down tonight that I noticed the teleport icon on the map page. Man, what a bunch of wasted time!! Now I should be able to breeze through this much better. I hope to beat it tomorrow so I can pack it up and ship it back to Gamefly. This might be another title I add to my permanent collection down the road once it drops in price. Assassin's Creed is in my collection, despite some flaws. PoP is mostly good, and I'll chalk that up as a success.

At one point I actually had brand new copies of Ico, Kingdom Hearts, Twisted Metal Black, Jak and Daxter, Katamari Damacy, and a couple of other PS2 classics that I had found for cheap, all unopened. I was going to buy a PS2, but then life got in the way and I ended up selling my Xbox and all of my Xbox games instead of adding another console like I had planned. I then decided to just sell those PS2 games as well. I regret doing that now, but at this point I have so much to play that I couldn't possibly justify picking up another system. And didn't you beat ME in a night? I slogged through that game for a week, so my frustration levels were approaching... wait for it... 9000!

Hey, it's early. Sue me.

I'm not playing PoP in huge chunks either, so that might help keep it from overstaying its welcome. I just fire it up, play through most of an area or two and then turn it off and focus on WoW or Persona 4. It's a nice tonic game... something to play when you need a break from heavier fare.

Maggie: Gah. You poor dear. I can understand not going back but man, you're missing out. Of course, they'll eventually rerelease the entire PS2 backcatalogue to play on the PSP 8000, so you'll be ok in 2015.

Zarathstra: I've heard the 4th edition compared to D&D flavoured WoW (or vice versa) but that's not a bad thing in my opinion. A big issue for me in getting people to play over the past few years is trying to get newbies over the rule hump and I've heard that 4th edition is incredibly streamlined. I always have my old 2nd and 3rd edition books (hell, I think I have my original D&D boxset somewhere) so it's not like I can't play with those rules if I ever get to that point where I CAN, but I'd still like to take the new rules for a spin at some point.

And one last thing: VEGGIE POWER!

What the fuck, aren't you playing Gears 2 with Kojak and Purple Santa right now?! We just left like one minute ago, and you're already posting?!

Oh god. No wonder you were bored.

I suppose you may have a point, but for me, an experienced gamer, the new edition does nothing. They've removed most of the classes with subtly, turned every class into a bookkeeping nightmare, removed some core classes to add new ones that seem really twinky, removed most of the roleplaying specific skills and feats, etc. It just seems like you're building a unit in an RTS rather than creating a fully fleshed out character.

C'est la vie. I guess its a good thing my 3.5 edition books didn't burst into flame as soon as the new edition came out :)

I'm going to pick it up on Steam one of these days as well. I keep hoping that it will show up on the weekend deal. I look forward to us conquering the world together, or beating you senseless. ;)

I really, really, REALLY want to play the Persona games. Between you guys here, and the Retronauts ShinMegTen (or whatever) podcast, I'm itching for some Persona. Too bad I don't have a Playstation 2 or 3, or the games for that matter. :(
Well you will have your way with me. Well in Civ IV anyway :) Let me know if you spot a weekend Steam sale...I'll jump on it too...
Rise of the Argonauts and hopefully kill one of my backlog - Silent Hill: Homecoming.
SH:H...thanks for reminding me of another game i've left behind not played...
Well, this will be the first time I'll have my own laptop at the in-laws as opposed to being forced to used the in-laws POS lappy/desktop. I go for about a week, usually, so there is plenty of time to game in the evenings.

You stay with your in laws for a week??? You do have patience...calling you Yoda was spot on...

Well, you'll probably enjoy Disgaea. Just don't come crying to us when you've spent 40 hours in the item world and haven't touched the main storyline at all :)
Disgaea is on my list of games to play as well. Gorvi got me interested in this title since it's one he really likes. Once again lured into 100 hour game...

Bioshock (PC): I continue to inch my way through the game..did some back tracking, grabbed some money, killed some Big Daddy to grab some more Adam. I'm at Andrew Ryan's doorstep and I feel a big twist coming. (...and please, No spoilers. :D )
Enjoy the game :D :D

He claimed he was going to bed. Actually I think my pathetic gameplay drove him to his DS :p. He wasn't only posting here...he was on AIM with ADD...so he was busy after his log off ;). I had a blast playing with you guys early this morning. I wish you guys weren't on the West Coast and Australia...but it was worth it.

And Spigot, I looked for you last night to play L4D...I guess your kids projectile vomit kept you away. Mags saw me playing and left me a zombie message for me...thanks mags...I needed that laugh since my second play through the first movie...I got left behind! :(. I loved the end credits...in memory of Purple Santa...guys at Valve have a sense of humor..bastards...

I hope to finish my "winter" cleaning so I can get back to some gaming.

I actually beat Death Toll for the first time last night. The horde was coming and we were all a little scattered. I ran for the dock and leaped on the boat. I think Wasson and BrassGecko also made it, but we did lose the fourth guy.

Update on my weekend gaming...flew to Hawaii and the entire flight (6 hours), I was absorbed...I mean ABSORBED in Dragon Quest 4! I brought a ton of games, but this is the one that I will be playing.

If you haven't played this game yet and like RPG's...I would say you would have to buy it now :)

I'm playing restore the failed harddrive. Fortunately, I put some points into Backup All Your Data...or I'd be facing the Lost Scrapbooking Photos Boss...

Man, am I ever happy about Steam. No discs to find, no sixteen digit codes to enter, just reload the client and let it go...

My iPod is being a pain in the butt, though. It's taking for bloody ever to restore...ugh.

You stay with your in laws for a week??? You do have patience...calling you Yoda was spot on...Oh, they're not bad. They let me play games and don't act like I'm a leper for doing so, which is more than I can say for my own folks :)

And Spigot, I looked for you last night to play L4D...I guess your kids projectile vomit kept you away. Nah. I was playing WoW and finally made it to Northrend last night (yay) before lag sent me packing. Then it was an hour or two of Persona 4 and I was off to bed for my first decent night's sleep in a good week.

I might be on tonight! Again, toss me a message if you see me on there.

I just finished Dark Sector. It was worth the cheeseburger it costs me, but I was starting to be ready for it to be over by the last couple of levels. Very impressive graphics engine and tight controls, but the four or five enemy types started getting pretty boring to fight by the game's end.

I haven't done nearly enough gaming so far this weekend. Friday was a bust, and I haven't booted up anything yet today. Damn household chores and responsibilities. :(

Yesterday was pretty great though!

I'm glad i'm not the only one hit by household chores and responsibilities :(. I spend a good portion of my weekend chasing dust bunnies, putting away clothes that needed to be put away two months ago and other fun activities. It basically looked like a college dorm at the end of a semester. But did get enough gaming in to scratch my itch.

Oh, that asshole. ;) I wish we hadn't started playing so late. Like Joey said, we had just gotten back from a friend's party, which is why it was 2:30 am by the time we joined.

We should play more, Santa! I'm sure you'll get better at it the more you play. :)

Define better :p. I am sure I will get better enough not to die so fast. Maybe 4 minutes instead of 2 :). No matter, I had a blast playing and you guys were really great to play with. I've stayed away from online gaming in general since before CoG and EvAv, I had no one I knew to play around with online. It's certainly a different experience to play with other which like I said, was a blast. And I must say...you have some GoW skills. It was fun to watch people who know how to play.

And while i'm here...once again for you Spigot...go HERE (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?p=109422#post109422)

I actually just bought Civ: Rev yesterday and it's my first Civ game. It's incredible. I'm having such a freaking good time building my city and just discovering various ways to go about winning. I've only played the Chieftain difficult thus far (easiest, I believe), but I've won with military, tech, and culture so far. My goal is to get each victory on each difficulty.

But, like you, I know now that I have to pick up Civ 4 here shortly. I know myself well enough to realize I'm going to want something more broad and with a load of options and tweaks after a bit so I think Rev is a great jumping off point for that.

So yeah: Rev is awesome and I can't believe I didn't grab it sooner.

Me as well.
Luckily I used Data Recovery Wizard. Not only did I find EVERY SINGLE FILE. I found files from a deletion almost 4 months ago on the drive. AND it restored all my files in thier folders. Amazing program. I tried four and none worked like this one.

Oh and games. Rise of the Argo's and probably some MMO beta
