Late poll this time?

I choose LittleBigPlanet!

Think these are editor's choice? Also, no Crysis: Warhead or Far Cry 2? Otherwise, good list.

This ones a toughie...

Though I think LBP had the best of the fun cutesy and consistent as well as very appealing graphics, I chose Dead Space for absolutely immersing me in it's constant state of horror and creating an amazing aomosphere on visual cues alone.

Just a heads up that Dead Space in on the PC as well, but you've got it listed for just 360 and PS3. In fact, your box art is from the PC version. ;)

Wow. This is a tough, tough category. Each one has some amazing art (except for MGS4).

I went Mirror's Edge. I think Gears has some really incredible visuals as does Dead Space, but Mirror's style really resonates with me for whatever reason. But as some have said: tough call on this one.

Crysis Warhead.

Hands down. Don't try to argue, just shut up!

Gears 2 was fucking amazing, but Mirror's Edge was photorealistic at times. A really tough category.

Crysis would take it on a technical standpoint, but I'll side with Prince of Persia today.

I'd have loved for Valkyria Chronicles to be on this one.

Nothing looks as cool as Little Big Planet. The level of detail in it is amazing. At times it looks photorealistic. But the found art "handy crafts" art style is also highly unique.

(I just wish it played as good as it looks)

No Animal Crossing: City Folk?? :p

My eyes don't hurt looking at Prince of Persia.

LBP comes in second. I say this because I have been spending more time playing with Elika than a sock puppet.

Fallout 3 is missing.

Please nominate it (and/or others) in the Users Coggies (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?p=105945#post105945).

Gears 2. There was some stunning visuals in that that I couldn't believe I was seeing! Whichever wins deserves it, all great, 'cept MGS4.

Prince of Persia just recently came out. I don't think many people have played it yet.

Man. It is a tossup between the clean and bright Mirror's Edge and the illustrative PoP for me. Sooo tired of dark and dreary games.

Wow, close race.

I chose Gears. Just because it looks freaking stupendous at times. LBP or any other game could take it's place easily though it's really a hard call.

Best design - LBP

Fallout 3 would get my vote though if it was there. The vistas keep pulling me back.

While I think most of those games look good and Gears definitely takes the cake for overall graphic detail I think Mirrors Edge deserves the award for being not only beautiful and clean but colorful without looking like a cartoon.

Play LBP in HD and you'll be amazed at the textures. Winner.

I voted for Mirror's Edge. While GoW2 is technically superior and one of the top console games visually, Mirror's Edge was gorgeous in more subtle, clean-cut ways. GoW2 was too easy a choice, and Mirror's Edge really did impress me.

Tough choice. I only played 3 of them with the rest being in my backlog. Dead Space vs Mirror's Edge in the final...DS since it didn't give me motion sickness when I played. But ME was a very nice looking game indeed. I'd like to see visuals that go beyond the usual drab and dreary colors.

Definitely PoP for me, it's knocking my socks off.

MGS4. I was floored at the smoothness and no pop-ins at 1080p. On a console. Yes, Crysis:Warhead had better graphics, but most people aren't running it at the same resolution as MGS4.

Gears of war 2. Close one for all, but gears had moments that surpassed all of these many times over.

It's a tough choice. I'd go with MGS4 for the best looking game as it STILL is my benchmark for what graphics can be this generation. Gears 2 is good too, but I think MGS4 pulls out more visual tricks. From a technical standpoint, Dead Space is probably the closest I've seen to MGS4 in terms of presentation.

LBP and Prince Of Persia get my vote on the design side of things. And then you have Mirror's Edge which straddles the style/tech divide.

If I could vote for one game, I'd vote for Valkyria Chronicles, but I can handle it not being on the list as this is still a solid list (unlike the Writing one).

Now to go ponder what I should vote for on this list for a while longer...

Deadend

Now this is a good set of choices.

I am going with Dead Space, I think... I forgot if I voted for that or Gears.

Gears was the best looking game Technically, but Dead Space had really great design visually, with the menus, UI, computer, tech... everything in that game felt like it was part of the world of Dead Space in a way that no other game on the list managed to get that sense of consistency.

MGS4 and LBP look amazing and all, but the art and visuals in that new Prince of Persia blow away anything else from this year by far. Even with as easy as I've heard the game is I want it for the art alone, it looks beautiful.

Dead Space got my vote. The design in that game is incredible. It took something that could have looked really stale (soldiers in space!!) and gave it a unique visual style. The HUD and video logs are also incredible. I love how it all exists within the 3D space of the game world, instead of being superimposed as 99.99% of game HUDs are.

Wow, really touch choice. I give my vote to Mirror's Edge for the way it implements the art style and color palette into gameplay.

MGS4 for me. I'm thinking of the 'presentation' part of this category. So many times throughout that game, they changed up what I'm used to and presented an interactive cinematic experience. The race through the dark streets of a European city, the boss battles in the snow and atop a cathedral tower, the split-screen crawl of Snake in the third act...

While other candidates in this category impressed me greatly with their visual style and art direction, it was MGS4 that I remember presenting it all the best.

It was a toss up between LBP and PoP for me, but I hate the character design of the prince himself so I had to go with LBP. Heck, if nothing else I think they deserve it for the creation of the sackboy character and all the costumes for him. I've never had so much fun dressing up a character.

Ravenlock
12-12-2008, 10:41 AM
Wow, that's a remarkably even distribution of votes. Right now it's 16, 14, 13, 20, 17, 16.

When we say "Visual Presentation" do we mean pure pixel-pushing horsepower or actual art style?

If the former, then I'll go with Gears 2. If the latter, then I'll go with Fable II.

I don't think it's the pixel-pushing horsepower, as much as what you do with what you have.

It's both. Graphics and design.

Dead Space's UI design was absolutely fantastic. I gave it my vote for that. There may have been other games that had slightly better textures or what not, but the overall design of that game was pretty much perfect.

I went with Dead Space, great visual quality and super slick interface/menus. The health and stasis bar on the suit and ammo displays for the weapons are great. Being able to rotate around the menus and video broadcasts is also very slick.

Honorable mentions:
Dark Sector
Fallout 3

I don't think it's the pixel-pushing horsepower, as much as what you do with what you have.

I assumed it was both, balanced however the voter thinks is most important to them. So I went GeoW2 for technical, MGS4 for art design, and gave LBP my actual vote.

Uh, sorry to rain on the parade but MGS4 runs at 720p and scales up.

For me, it was between LBP and Gears 2. I'm kind of sad that neither has the lead, but I guess it's understandable considering the competition.

Had to give it to Prince of Persia. Which is stunning like Shadow of the Colossus was stunning.

I was fairly certain of that, but didn't want to comment myself.

I'm sure we would have heard a lot more hoopla if the game really ran in 1080p.
