It may be a possibility (http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/12/rumor-zune-phon.html).
After years of rumors and brusque denials, it appears the Zune phone is the real deal.
According to Trip Chowdhry, an analyst at Global Equities Research, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will announce a Zune-style mobile device during his keynote address at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, on January 7, 2009.
In an article in Barron's, Chowdhry claims that the company's new centerpiece will combine the best features of the Zune media player with the hardware design of Danger's mobile Sidekick, in addition to "motion enhancement features," like an accelerometer.
It seems doubtful, but who knows. Microsoft certainly has a record of persistence.

I'm hoping to get a job at T-Mobile this month. I love my Zune.
Please, Santa. I've been a good boy. Make my dreams come true. Bring it all together.
If it isn't a fatty then I'll consider getting on, if it's for ATT

No way, fuck that noise. AT&T sucks!
I need more information on this. I'm not sure where they are trying to go with "motion enhancement features," but whatever. I just hope it has a good battery life.

I'd like to see it, but...if they don't offer it with Alltel, or maybe even Verizon, then it's probably not going to be doable for me. AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and the rest seem to have poor or no reception around here, if their coverage maps are accurate, especially for data services.

Probably another accelerometer for tilt functions.

Will it be called the Zhone? Or the Pune?

Alltel equals Verizon now. ;)

Alltel equals Verizon now. ;)Well, even before the (still pending?) merger, I guess they use the same infrastructure. So it'll just mean there's one carrier I have as an option, rather than two.

It's either this or the rumored $100 4 GB iPhone for me.

Well, someone needs to make Windows Mobile phones for the US, RIM and Apple are handing everyone else their lunch. Abroad Nokia is supreme, are they Windows Mobile?

I'm willing to bet it won't be with AT&T if it's real. AT&T is under the Apple empire now.

Sweet. As I said in the OP, it seemed pretty improbable.

Generally you wont see Apple announcements at CES, Mac World tends to happen around CES. There has been some stolen thunder in the past, like the the iPod was announced. It is like Nintendo and the Tokyo Game Show.

And a history of being behind the curve.
