AMD/ATI have released version 8.12 of the Catalyst video drivers. The new drivers offer speed improvements for a number of recent games and a general purpose acceleration technology called ATI Stream:
The release introduces support for ATI Stream - AMD's take on general purpose GPU acceleration - and promises to "unlock the potential of accelerated applications for millions of Radeon graphics processors worldwide".

You can get the drivers from ATI's drivers and software (http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html) site. Check out the link below for a list of games that receive improvements in this release - there are some goodies in there!

Hellgate: London DX10 – performance gains of up to 6% for Single card mode and up to 10% for Crossfire mode. Performance gains were noticed on all Radeon HD4xxx

Why the heck are they bothering to improve the performance for this?

Hmmm sounds interesting. I'll have to update it when I get home tonight. I'm hoping it will prevent Crysis from crashing on the last boss so I can finally finish the game.

I've given up on the official drivers an rely on Omega drivers now. The new ones just seem to fuck up stuff that was working fine. At least, it does on my AiW 9800 Pro.

One issue with the Omega drivers is that there is no support for Vista yet.

My guess is the performance issue was just a bug of some sort that needed fixed anyway, and the Hellgate thing was just how they discovered it.
