Crisis Core is sadly missing, or else it would've gotten my vote. Having just played through God of War, that gets my vote. It may be somewhat short, but what's there looks amazing and plays great.

Wow tough category. Heads up though, you're going to get more than a few complaints TWEWY didn't make the cut. Oddly enough, my vote goes to one of the few games on this list I haven't played, Chrono Trigger. The SNES version is far and away my favorite game of all time.

Order of Ecclesia by a fucking mile (and Chrono Trigger is my favorite game of all time).

Well since Dragon Quest IV is absent from the choices, I guess my vote goes to Layton.

I abstain.
The World Ends With You is not on there.
The Coggies seem to be missing a lot of titles that should be on these lists, but it's still fun to see what people vote.

Professor Layton got my wife and I through many a long night with a colicky newborn early in the year. For that, it gets my vote. (and my heart)

Where is LocoRoco 2? Oh and I can't vote for Chrono Trigger as it's not out here until February. Actually, I could import it...
I thought everyone and their dog was crazy for "The World Ends with You"? Also, should ports really be included? Chrono Trigger is a great game and I have no doubt that it is still good on the DS.
I'm not voting because I haven't played most of these, but I was curious why this isn't on here when I constantly hear good things about it. . . another case of the idiotic "must have six choices" policy?

GoW. I think that was a total breakthrough for handheld gaming. Order is great too. Chrono is a remake so....

Order of Ecclesia. It might just be Castlevania again, but its still Castlevania.

This category was originally 'handheld/mobile games' but none of us play cell phone games, and they're never really discussed here, so we decided rather than just throwing a few in, we'd just leave them out this year.

Ok, I'm not trying to harp on these selections but TWEWY is not even an obscure title. It is on a number of "best of the year" lists. It also would have been my pick by a large margin. Granted, I haven't played Castlevania or ChronoTrigger yet, but unlike those two titles. TWEWY is a brand new IP and a great one.

Never got more than a little into TWEWY, still need to pick it back up considering how everyone here raves about it.
I voted for Patapon, just because every time I see it I start getting the beats stuck in my head. Though to be honest, it's a toss up between a lot of those games on that list. All very good.

For a year with so many good portable games (nearly as many as on the consoles themselves) it is sad to see it relegated to a single category of "Best Hand Held Game", while the consoles get individual categories (and I'm sure a "Best Game" category as well). We can't even open it up to just Best DS, Best PSP?
Whiny, I know. As most responses to the polls have been. It is just everything feels so limited.
Still love the polls though, so don't let the bitching discourage you.

Huh, didn't think Layton would get so many votes. I didn't really like it, as I feel it is a poorly made adventure game. Just having NPCs shout puzzles at you just reeks of poor design to me. It was very nice looking, though, and my roommate liked it.

It had aesthetic charm. However, I found the actual game became pretty tedious and boring rather quickly. I was solving SAT problems only with a prettier aesthetic.

Crisis Core was/is great.
I guess I'll vote God of War. I have to say I really don't think Chrono Trigger should even be nominated. It's a fine port, sure...but when there are legitimate new games that deserved to be on the list (Crisis Core, TWEWY) and are bumped in favor of it...boo.
It'd be like putting Disgaea on the DS up here.

It's a forum, so yeah, there will be always complaints about SOMETHING. But voting on choices the community didn't have a voice on...well that is going to cause some strife. This would solve the bigger issue.

The best way to do it would be to have a nomination round. Give everyone the option to submit their top 3 choices for the poll. After 50 or so responses take the top 5 or 6 most frequently occurring games and then make the poll to determine the winner out of those. This way the winner is truly determined by the community. Nobody can argue that something was overlooked since the nomination round would be open for anything, and nobody can argue that too many choices are splitting the vote since the actual vote is limited to a small number.

Professor Layton is winning, really? God, I quit after about 20 minutes, was bored to tears.
Edit: The puzzles were fun, but walking around and clicking on every pixel of the screen for hidden stuff wasn't. Or the dialog with the townsfolk, didn't care for the setting at all, but that's just me.

Happy to see Prof Layton on the list and to see that so far it's getting some love from the community. That game has brought some non-gamers over to our side.
A friend of mine actually ended up going to a midnight launch party for Super Smash Bros. Brawl with some buddies so that she could purchase a DS and Professor Layton.

Yeah Chrono Trigger is one of, if not my most favorite game, but it's a port... I'm glad it's on my DS I'm playing through it on my bus commutes right now, but I'm not gonna vote for it, doesn't seem right.
I wouldn't have cared if Chrono got replaced with TWEWY on the list, it deserves to be there more I think. I still would have voted for Layton though, TWEWY didn't grab me and make me finish it for some reason, I might go back to it at some point but Layton I played start to finish.
If this were best music in a handheld... TWEWY all the way!

Chrono Trigger does not deserve to be on the list. A slightly enhanced port of a game from the SNES era, while a great game... should not be put next to new games.
I am voting for TWEWY. Which puts it at what... 10 votes at least now?

I wonder how many of the people who voted for "Professor Layton" actually finished the game. My guess would be not many. The game was charming at first but quickly grew tiresome.

The fact that Crisis Core is missing is definitely a huge oversight. MASSIVE, even.
That said, the obvious choice is Professor Layton.
EDIT: (in response to EternalGamer) I won't vote for a game unless I've finished it. Professor Layton was tiresome, but felt really rewarding when you made it all the way to the end.

That's because it was a puzzle game with a charming story, not an adventure game.

I haven't actually finished it myself, but I did vote for it. I've enjoyed what I've played so far, although it's not the kind of game that I want to sit and play for hours on end.
I'm pretty bad at finishing games in general, moreso with handheld games, at least on the DS.
