Two come to mind. Tecmo Super Bowl, and Baseball Stars. If I had to take one, I'd have to say Baseball Stars.

How about another poll that's relevant to people who don't live in the US? ;)

Bases Loaded, Sports Talk Baseball, Triple Play Baseball, RBI Baseball.

Guess I like baseball, huh? NBA Jam as well.

NFL Blitz.

NHL '95 for classic panache.

NHL2k5 for the best true representation of the game.

I simply think hockey translates to a video game much better than most sports, baseball being close behind. Soccer as well, but I am not a fan so I do not play those.

Best sports game and they're all NFL? Fail sir. NHL should have a game as a choice.

Edit: Oh, sorry, there's one basketball game.

But seriously, Pro Evolution Soccer 4. Still my favorite.

Not using the poll, as I don't like any of them. :)

I wrote it in :). NBA Jam Tournament Edition for SNES was a close second.

NHL09. Hands down the finest hockey videogame to date - and I say this as a longtime 2K fan and Blades of Steel fanatic.

I mean you have 5 football games and 1 basketball game?! And you know that a game doesn't have to be a decade old to be 'great,' right?

Baseball Stars, Blades of Steel or NBA Jam. One of those.

NCAA Basketball (SNES) and NHL Stanley Cup (SNES) were also considered by our editor, but did not fit within the 6 choices alloted.

Perhaps they will show up in a later category.

How about another poll that's relevant to people who don't live in the US?

Alas, the last Euro football game our editor enjoyed was Quatro Sports on the NES, an unfortuinate oversight as a result of great time elapsed since. There was also a Rugby game on the genesis but frankly the editor never really understood it. More than that I cannot say.

I counter with NHL94

No way. AI, puck physics, Be A Pro mode, 6 vs. 6 online team play...all this and a great skating engine?

Again, I submit that classic favorite games can be outdone by brand new titles...in this case, it has.

NHL 94 - Making Gretzky's head bleed.

Baseball Stars on the NES is a CLOSE second.

Truth be told I never played anything beyond NHL99, but NHL94 is simple and perfect. Shoot, pass, check.

And Basewars is excellent.

Boys, boys! Calm down! In the hockey game debate, we must make a distinction. If we were asking which is the greatest hockey game, then it is NHL 94. If we were choosing the greatest hockey simulation, then NHL 09. Everyone's a winner!

Unfortunately, the category was "best sports game ever", not "best sports game of the last 15 minutes"

The Academy apologizes for the lack of clarity, and asks that if you are still playing NHL '09 some years down the line rather than it being lost in the endless march of yearly releases, you be sure to let us know, so that we may consider it for a future award.

My bad. I thought 'ever' meant all time from the dawn of the universe through right now. No, wait, I mean now. No, now. And NOW.

I mean, I loved NHL94. But I'm not playing it anymore, 'cause it's not as good as NHL09. :D

I haven't played a single game on your poll in the last decade. Just because a game is recent doesn't make it invalid.

As it stands today, I agree with Kato's sentiment that NHL09 is the best hockey game ever and arguably the best sports game ever. As for the short-sighted list above, I voted Tecmo Superbowl, a classic for sure.

Why would you put NFL 2k? 2k1 was superior in every single way. Also, NFL 2k5 was better than both. That's still the best football game I've ever played.
