Left 4 Dead, no question. While I guess it is not really fair that I vote, since it is the only game on the list I have played, L4D is awesome enough that I am sure it deserves the win.

See, I'm totally stuck here. GoW2 because it has awesome multiplayer, especially Horde mode, but man does the matchmaking suck. L4D on the other hand is incredible too. decisions, decisions.

Before Left4Dead, I spent most of the year playing Rainbow Six...so I would have gone with that, but Left4Dead is just...well, we all know what it is :)

As for GoW2...whatever fun I have in-game is ruined by the wait to actually get in :(

Holy fuck, agreed. Take Mercs 2 out of there and put Rock Band 2 in! That's neck and neck with Gears 2. You know, I might even change my vote from L4D to RB2.

P.S. Please fix these "reader" nominations. It sucks that we're pigeonholed into nominations that are not the community's.

I voted for Left 4 Dead, although I really wish that Sins of a Solar Empire was on that list. I'm not surprised in the least that it wasn't nominated, but I had a lot of fun playing that game with the EvAv crew back at the beginning of the year.

Come to think of it, Sins might have been a 2007 title...and these nominations are obviously more for console games anyway. :p

The poll is for best multiplayer experience, though, and RB2 is an amazing multiplayer experience. Are you telling me we won't see Left 4 Dead in best shooter? A game can be good enough to win mutliple polls, and when it excels over certain titles that are nominated (SR2), it's stupid to not have it nominated.

I'm telling you that games do not appear to be repeated in multiple polls, and the winners will likely go heads up for the overall game of the year. I would bet that L4D does not show up on any other polls.

Pher said in the action awards nomination thread that Gears would be appearing in the shooter thread. And look! Here it is. In the multiplayer thread. So I'm guessing it's in two threads. Which is why I say it's wrong that RB2 isn't on this list.

Out of that list, I voted for Left4Dead. I don't want to sound like I'm jumping on the bandwagon of complainers here, but each one of these lists has been missing some serious heavy hitters, and unless music games has it's own genre, Rock Band 2 really should have been represented here. Left 4 Dead is by far the best multiplayer game but Mercenaries 2 was my best multiplayer experience this year. Bombing an oil rig for the first time and watching it fall apart was fantastic.
