So this is a big suggestion to help foster community, and prevent some of what occured at that other place. The powers that be should hold regular (monthly or quarterly) meetings discussing the running of the site. These meetings should be open for all members to attend, and the running of the site should be discussed openly. Using IRC or the like is probably the easiest way to handle this.

In order to really grow the community, a certain level of trust and transparency will be required from those running the site. As a member I would like to know what is happening, and what is planned for the future.

Topics of discussion should include finances, specifically donation funds, and where they are going. Advertising and other deals do not need to be discussed openly, but it should be made clear who our advertising partners are, be it Google Adsense or a game publisher. But we do not need to discuss the actual terms of these deals. As a guy who felt cheated at that other place, this really is an important topic to share with the rest of the community.

It would also be good to have a discussion involving any major planned site alterations just so everyone is aware what is happening.

To really make this work, a board of directors (BOD) should be established and really make this run like any other publicly traded company, where the powers that be are still held to a standard by their shareholders and aren't free to run mad with power.

This is just a suggestion to help the site and community grow together and stay strong. I have a lot more ideas around establishing and running a BOD and will share them if there is more interest here.

Although I think your ideas are well into the future (donations, major site changes, etc.) we have discussed how the transparency would be handled. I think James would lay the stuff out in the forum here and then people can reply as they see fit. That's just initial talk though.

Your idea is nice, but it would be hard to get the seven of us together at one time nevermind a good number of users simply because we do enjoy the time we can spend away from the site and our regular jobs.

Maybe organize as an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We'll take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week. But all the decision of that officer have to be ratified at a special biweekly meeting. By a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs, but by a two-thirds majority in the case of more....o.k. I'll stop.

Lets just buy ourselves an island somewhere, live on it, and draw our jobs from a hat. I call "village idiot"
