View Full Version : Monday Blues - What did you play?

So what did you play? Most of my time was writing/editing papers. I think my final page count for pages written is over 250 pages. Thankfully this was the last weekend for writing papers. I'm free after Wednesday. Free. Free I said. I did get some game time in, my ongoing battle with Mirror's Edge. I had to bail out of the "Faith" achievement meaning no killing. Bah, to that. I'm just looking to the end of the game. Also played some Castlevania Order of Ecclesia. Basically got to level up some with kill many enemies than run like hell back to a save point :). And i'm sure I left Spigot hanging in a zombie infested world of L4D...next weekend Spigot...I promise :).

So what did you PLAY?

I played The Last Remnant. Got crushed in the very first cave mission. I suck.

Fallout.
But the main mission FUCKING glitched.
Walked into a room and boom, about 5 copies of one of the main badguys all shooting...each other hahahahahahah.
Lost about 14 hours, until I found a save where this wouldn't occur.

FUCK.

Tales for the Wii.
Neopets for the DS(Awesome)
Mortal Kombat(My mission is to get through the Konquest for both Deception and Armageddon.

Tons of NHL 09 (as usual), and mostly trying to get through this Gears 2 campaign.

Still need to touch those ps3 games I have.

Conan (great), Two Worlds (enjoying it), beat Fracture (which wasn't close to being as bad as the reviews said--liked it a lot). I also played The Last Remnant, but not a lot. I'll hopefully be playing Prince of Persia and Mirror's Edge tomorrow. I go back to work on Tuesday, so my 3 week medical leave is at an end. Back to normal gaming time.

I almost wish I could have another surgery so I could stay home for another 3 weeks--though I can not afford to stay home without a paycheck anymore. But I have WAY too many games to play, and I have a bunch I bought on Black Friday/Cyber Monday that I haven't even opened. I'm set until next Fall, I think.

I played a ton of Last Remenant. Around 15 hours total this weekend while listening to podcasts/surfing the internet. I actually like the game quite a bit. Not sure if it will be able to continue to hold my attention in the near future, though, as I have a slew of cheap game purchases coming in from Gamefly and Amazon (Black Friday deals) in the next day or two.

I'm very glad you're still liking it, I was worried my recommendation would backfire on me if you hated it, making you lose all trust in my advice. :)

I took a small breather from it, but I'm still very early in the game. Maybe battle rank 16 or something. I started grinding just for the fun of it, trying to harvest materials for weapons.

I bought Two Human from Amazon on Black Friday for $20. Is that worth it you think? I have it still unopened just waiting to get to eventually.

I played over 7 hours of a Kingdom For Keflings, going from the beginning to the end of the game in two sittings. I loved it, and I'm really glad my 360 came back so I could finally get my mitts on it. AK4K definitely did not disappoint.

I also installed Impulse tonight and updated Sins of a Solar Empire. I'd like to start playing that again soon.

I subscribed to Gamefly, and I should have Gears 2 and Civilization Revolution here this week.

Finally, I bought I Fluid and Spellforce 2 + expansion on Steam for a total of $25. I Fluid is great so far. I'll post some impressions tomorrow.

I had quite a bit of fun with the demo. Not enough to buy the game, but I'm sure you'll get $20 worth of fun out of it.

Just try not to die, as the death animation is painfully long.

Fable 2, but that got put on hold for a lot of Chrono Trigger and Resident Evil 5 demo.

Man, that demo, close to being awesome, but it feels overworked. Like they took what was good about 4 and added an idea here, an idea there, and it just added up to too much.

Sometimes less is more.

Eh, I had an ok time playing through it co-op (but both of us spent much of the time complaining/making fun of the game). I doubt i would have made it through to the end solo, though. I played about 4 hours of it solo and that is about all I could take. The mechanics are fine and the storyline and production values are fine. But the level design is almost nonexistent. Just waves and waves of the same enemies. There isn't even much enemy variety in the different levels and there is no variation in strategy at all. The levels are mostly just wide open flat hallways with hordes of enemies streaming towards you.

My advice would be to plan on playing it co-op if at all possible. But if you keep enough of those left over painkillers around, perhaps the single player could hold your interest...

It is definitely worth 20$ if your expectations aren't high. I loved what they were trying to do with it though the execution was never fully fleshed out. All in all it is a nice mindless hack and slash. Don't get frustrated with the controls early...it will become more natural as you play it.

As for me:
A Kingdom For Keflings - finished the SP part...maybe I should try some multiplayer later
Far Cry 2 - Just touched on the multiplayer for about an hour with Gerbs. It has an 'almost great, but not quite' feel to it. There is something extremely disappointing when a machete kill in multiplayer has no satisfaction in it.
Left 4 Dead - Lots of multiplayer and even got a lot of fresh blood to join us (Torrefaction, Rock Bandit, JPC and his gal, and astranoir...hopefully we didnt scare any of you away :))
The Darkness - I have had this in my backlog for a long time. I just started it and it seems fun...btw Mags, I am going through on easy :D

Mainly Fallout 3, started a new evil chara. haven't finished the game yet but I just want to explore me and the mains story won't let me. I've found tons of new stuff already and cranked the difficulty to hard.

Also a small bit of Mirrors Edge, Gears 2, LBP and fable 2. But compared to fallout it really can't be mentioned.

Got started on Gears 2, but didn't get very far. Kids were in a musical this weekend, so I spent a lot of proud papa time.

Also watched my son slip into a deep LBP editor addiction. I thought he'd like the game, but I didn't know how much (or I would've saved it for Christmas...d'oh).

Other than that, ran a few quests in Wrath. No more troubles with lag ever since I turned the shadows setting way down!

I played being sick. All weekend. We've been going at it co-op, with my wife and both boys joining in. The game sucks, I really don't recommend it. In fact, it sucks so much we're still playing.

As far as real gaming, I did barely any. I was able to play through all of God of War for the PSP between Friday and yesterday, it took about 7 hours. Great game, and one I will be playing through again soon.

I also popped in N+ for the PSP (I'd gotten it for $10 from Amazon's BF sale to qualify for free shipping). I can remember enjoying the XBLA demo, but w/o the online leaderboard aspect the game is rather weak. It's a fun little distraction, but I'm glad I only payed $10 for it.

I tried to play a little bit of Valkyria Chronicles and WipEout HD, but I felt (feel) so crappy I couldn't concentrate. Being sick sucks.

Bah. That sucks Gorvi. I hope everyone gets better!

I wanted to play Valkyria Chronicles this weekend but just couldn't muster up the oomph to play it. I played The Last Remnant Saturday and Sunday evening with a little bit of E4 and GeoWars2 last night for fun. I am sort of stuck in Prince Of Persia, so that's why I've been focusing on Last Remnant, which, like EG, I'm really liking.

I did play a little bit of Chrono Trigger on the weekend but the family thing wasn't nearly as boring as it usually is so that was kind of nice. I also played WoW and tried out SMT: Imagine.

And that's about it. I watched Zathura with my son yesterday afternoon. It was a surprisingly good kids movie and you could see some of the tricks that Favreau ended up using in Iron Man.

Thanks for the directions to the thread, Purple Santa. I thought I was still on deck to make one this week. Boy, wouldn't that have been embarassing?

Played a bit of NHL09 and a bunch of Saint's Row (about 33% done w/ 22/45 neighborhoods).

The real surprise was GameFly sending me Battlefield: Bad Company on Saturday and me playing it all day Sunday. I'm actually having fun with it and miss the large-scale Battlefield gaming I used to spend so much time with on my PC years ago. While I understand what DICE is doing with the franchise, I hope this iteration is a step towards another multiplayer Battlefield game with similar-sized maps and graphical fidelity.

I finished Fallout 3. I didn't really do much exploring and ignored most side quests, so I'll have to play it again later. The game ended just as I had fallen in love with it :)

Yesterday I started Prince of Persia, and I'm pretty sure I'll end up loving this game. The storytelling and design is awesome. I'm not in love with the gameplay yet, but it's getting there.

Last, but not least; Resident Evil 5 demo. The game looks amazing. I'm no RE fan, so I'm not sure how it compares to earlier installments, but I think this will be among the better games of -09. Capcom needs to tighten up the controls and the Sheva AI though.

No. But it's sure to satisfy any bloodthirst you may have.

It's a God of War clone sorta, just not as good. But it doesn't mean it's not pure mindless fun. Killing lots and lots of enemies in gory ways is a decent way to relax sometimes.

Booted up my pc, only to encounter a pink line running down the middle of my monitor :( This actually happened a couple of weekends ago, but ended up fixing itself. I was too lazy to try and get it fixed, even though I have a 1 year warranty. I'll probably send it back in January, just too busy right now...and it fixed itself on Sunday anyways. Something about Saturdays, this is the second Saturday in the last 3 weeks that it has done this...

Anyways, touched on a bunch of stuff on:

[PC]

Sins of a Solar Empire: Finally worked my way through the tutorial and started playing one mission. I really like it so far and am embarrassed that it has sat on the pile for so long.

Dawn of War: Played through the tutorials. I really like the look and feel of this RTS so far.

Spellforce 2: Touched a bit of this last night, just to see how it looks. It has me intrigued.

Company of Heroes: Very brief foray to play a bit of the tutorial.

Hinterland: Lots of this game. Finally completing a map for the first time since purchasing the game.

Fallout 3: Again, just thought I would play an hour, but ended up completing the entire "Those!" campaign and heading off on another mission for Moira.

[360]

Call of Duty 5: World at War: Fired this game up for the first time and made it through the first 1 and a half levels. So far it's "okay". Nothing spectacular, more of the same old same old. It's fun, though, and I'm enjoying myself so far. Will probably trade this in when I'm done though (which is kind of rare for a collector-personality like me).

[DS]

Final Fantasy I: GBA combo game with I&II that I picked up used. Very much enjoying reliving my youth.

Chrono Trigger: Put down FFI and started Chrono Trigger. Note to self, learn to read the manual. I thought sleeping at an inn would mean I saved the game...well, I'll be replaying the first part of this game again. At least I didn't make it very far yet :) This is the game that I will enjoy during my Hawaiian vacation starting on Friday!

[OTHER]

Finally finished Arrested Development. I had made to the first 2 seasons a few years back. New girlfriend gave me an opportunity to restart the series and over the last month we plowed through it again. Final episode was great!

Mostly just Gears 2, L4D, and the Resident Evil 5 demo.

I also spent hours around 4 am waiting in the Gears 2 lobby with Talanvor and my boyfriend and another friend because Kojak's internet is somehow worse than mine. Whenever he actually showed up in the lobby, we would rejoice. Much time was spent party chatting at ridiculous hours Sunday morning.

Sins is actually in real time, so it's much faster paced than Master of Orion. It's still much slower than you average RTS, especially on larger maps, and there is a large tech tree involved. It's definitely a 4X game, but in realtime. I'm going to pick up Galactic Civilizations II soon for my TBS fix.

I watched The Day The Earth Stood Still on NetFlix streaming... and loved it.

I didn't realize that movie was on there. I'll have to check it out soon.

I wish that the movies didn't have a time limit associated with them. About half of the movies in my Watch Instantly queue are set to disappear come January 1st. Hopefully they will be extended, but so far every move on my list with an expiration date has disappeared once that date hits. Netflix definitely needs to work this out if they want to continue to grow their service.

I just want to inform anyone out there that if they want me to play L4D or Horde mode on GoW2, sorry.

I'll be busy fiddling with my unions this week. The Last Remnant has sunk its claws into me something fierce. I want to slap the reviewers who didn't like it.

Of course, I ran into that classic trap this morning. I had half an hour before work and stumbled into a boss fight. Finished that up with about 15 minutes to go before work. Cue cutscene. Cue another cutscene. Cue ANOTHER cutscene. Thankfully the rambling finally finished with 5 minutes to spare before I had to be at work, but I was able to save and boogie on over to work on time.

Why is it that I can spend hours playing a JRPG and do the same random grinding and exploring but the second I have to head off to work it's cutscene city? Sigh.

There are several possibilities. Certainly a few in Pirates of the Caribbean. ;)

I managed to get in a bit of gaming tonight. I started off with Rez. I made it to the first boss (the planet thing) and died, so I decided to play a few demos I had downloaded a while back. First up was "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" just for kicks. It was awful, and was quickly deleted. I messed around with some community games, including The Pit, which is a game that is played entirely with sound. I don't have surround sound, so I was out of luck there. I finally landed on Hexic HD, which I ended up playing for quite some time. I forgot how addictive that game can be! I even managed to unlock an achievement. :D

Now it's time for a couple episodes of Judge Judy and then bed.

Chrono Trigger and I tried Mario Galaxy and some assorted Gamecube/Wii games on my new 52" Samsung. The way the tv handles 480P really impressed me as I was expecting a sub-par to terrible picture.

Um, embarrassingly, I've never cleared level two of Rez. Can anyone help me with the boss? It's a multistage boss. You have to aim for the core by shooting the blocks. When it goes into the crazy tree of death, just aim for the tips where the light is.

Oh, and when it first starts (before the rotating platforms with the yellow blocks) you need to just shoot the tips of whichever arms are flung out.

If you ever have Rez questions, I'm the guy to ask. I've been playing that game off and on for 5-6 years.

Raw indeed. I'll be watching Road Warrior soon.

Much better. Those are the only two in the series I've seen. Road Warrior is much more my style, but even more depressing if you've seen Mad Max. I saw Road Warrior a long time ago and thought they were in some post World War III world. Turns out, if you watch Mad Max, that society simply falls apart and we all end up looting to survive. Blerg.

Beyond Thunderdome is a very silly and ridiculous movie, that doesn't really fit in the series. The first half is decent, although still pretty damn ridiculous, then Max runs into a group of retarded kids and goes on a Goonies-esque adventure. I enjoy it as a movie I like to laugh at.

It also does explain that they are in a kind of post WWIII world.

Who doesn't? ;)
I just want to inform anyone out there that if they want me to play L4D or Horde mode on GoW2, sorry.

Geez. I finally have free time and now you are busy?? I feel like such a jilted lover...

I'll be busy fiddling with my unions this week. The Last Remnant has sunk its claws into me something fierce. I want to slap the reviewers who didn't like it.

I am itching to play a JRPG. I'm almost tempted to buy this...but I have enough laying around. Probably start P3...but still so tempted since everyone is liking TLR...

Sigh.
I used to do this all the time. And ages ago where I worked it was a long commute. So I had to leave at a particular time or I was screwed. I screwed myself many time over...or other times running like a mad man catching my transportation...I somehow don't do this anymore...I tend to play on CoG instead to feed the need to be late somewhere...or avoid doing important stuff...like studying for tomorrow's exam :o
My latest Play-Asia order came in today, and am now the proud owner of:

-Ridge Racers 2 (PSP)
-Twinbee Collection (PSP)
-Soldier Collection (PSP)
-Kaze no Klonoa: Door to Phantomile. This one I'll be breaking in tonight. (Wii)
Nice haul! I want to track down RR 1 now...
Played a lot of Bioshock and wondered why I put this game on the back burner. Having an Excellent time playing through it.
How did you put it down in the first place?? So are you a kid lover, kid killer...or somewhere inbetween? :p

Am I not on your friends list?

Remember the problems we had with this? I added someone that I thought was you, but it turned out to be someone else with a similar name. I tried to add you again, but it told me I wasn't able to. Hence I don't think you're on my list. You might be, but I'd have to check when I get home. I'm pretty sure Guboo (Spigot) was the only one on my list who made it to the third level, although I could be wrong.

I never realized that people had trouble with the bosses in REZ. I usually do the playthrough where you do every single level in order and that takes about an hour to clear.

I do mean the 5th level. The achievement for beating it is called "Eden". Do you know how to unlock the level? I'm assuming I have to play Score Attack mode?

Edit - I almost forgot to add that I love the bosses, especially Uranus, the boss in the 4th level. Fighting him both in front of and behind you is really cool, and I loved when he turned into a giant man and started running.

If you've beaten all 4, make sure you have 100% activation (you hit all of the glowing cubes) on every level. That might be needed.

And yes. I concider the first 4 levels a mere warm-up for the real game that is level 5. That is the only level I spend a lot of time replaying. It was pretty hard on the Ambient Direct Attack, which threw a lot of enemies at me in combinations I wasn't used to.

When you have the enemy patterns etched in your brain and they start mixing it up, it's frustrating!

I'm hoping to finish this off before the weekend so I can move on to my backlog finally. I gave up on the Faith achievement. Which part did you get stuck on? I have a secret trick to get past the server room, if that's where you're at. It's RIGHT near the end of the game. It's basically the last room before the end.

What chapter are you on? Some of the areas required me to take down the guards with fisticuffs by hiding behind objects and picking them off one by one. Like the parking garage, one of the first places I found difficult.

To open up area 5 you have to get 100% analysis on levels 1-4. Not has hard as it sounds. Just make sure to finish killing the little box things at the end of every segment in the levels (the thing that goes "One, Two, Three, Four, Five" when you shoot it).

You don't have to do it all at once. Once you have 100% in each of the four levels, though, area 5 will open.

Dunno how to get Eden. I did it, but I don't remember how. You've GOT to get it. It seriously makes the earlier levels look like the interns made them while the real developers were crafting Eden. :D

Now you'll know why those of us who grabbed this on the PS2 back in the day were so excited about the HD version. I can't wait for the pseudo-sequel, assuming it gets made available over here.

Kel: There were a few parts in Mirror's Edge that drove me absolutely bonkers. The start of Chapter 7, the end of Chapter 8 and the rooftop run on Chapter 9 are all utterly infuriating, at least if you're playing on Normal and going for the Test Of Faith achievement.

Gah.

The server room was easy though. I did it once by letting them shoot the servers and then running up the stairs and the other time I just knocked them all out and punched the servers into submission :)

That's funny. I don't notice the difference at all while playing. They play exactly the same.

The ability to point at the screen in a Wii version of Rez has me wetting my pants with delight. While we're at it, lets get some Panzer Dragoon happening with that pointer too. I played Sin & Punishment on Virtual Console, and the game SCREAMED for pointer support. Someone at Treasure thinks so too, since we are finally getting a Sin & Punishment II.

In some ways, I actually kind of prefer the Standard version. A) I am very used to it from my years of playing it on the PS2 (I am envious of your DC version, JayVe) and B) the HD version is almost too bloomy with the new lighting. Try playing the Ambient stuff and it's almost impossible to see anything.

I mean, I like the HD graphics, but at times it's almost too hard to see what is on the screen with the way the new engine does the lighting.

So in other words, I'm fine with a Wii version of the next game. Sure, I'd probably like a nice HD version too, but as JayVe said, the game screams for point and shoot play.

JayVe

...the game screams for point and shoot play.
I never quite got this. There are games like Rez, and Panzer Dragoon, and Sin & Punishment, where the player utilizes a thumbstick to push around a cursor. Yet nobody has made a modern game, or even a port, of a game like that for Wii using the pointer in place of the thumbstick. Instead, we get 'lightgun games' that don't actually behave like a real lightguns. :(

I'm on chapter 8. It might of been different if I wasn't playing through the semester trying to get papers done but I got frustrated in the garage. I realied after the goal if you wanted the achievement was to hide behind the cars. But I was to focused on getting through so I finally had to GoW my way out.
