So I cleaned a woman's machine yesterday. Some spyware, nothing too serious. Defragged the machine as well. Worked great in house. Connected to the internet quickly and worked great. I bring the machine back to her house and it slows to a crawl. It was taking a long time to shutdown, sat on saving settings for well over 5 minutes. It would also not connect to the internet. If I let it sit, the automatic update yellow shield flashed quickly. I was getting an IP it seemed (used ipconfig). I was able to browse via safe mode though, which obviously is not a solution.

So I ask you IT mavens and network gurus, am I wrong to assume that the internet there or at least the setup at home is where the issue stems from? Is roadrunner somehow poisoning the connection and pc?

Is she connecting through a router or is the computer plugged directly into the cable modem?

Seems silly, but did you make sure the DHCP settings weren't the same from your house? If for some reason the IP address is still "valid" at both places (like you're both using the same brand router) it may not bother to change other settings like DNS - which'll tank the connection.

Try cold-starting the machine, doesn't hurt to reset the modem/router too. I've had some instances where the modem decides not to play nice with a machine when you try to hotswap it in.

No router, directly to the RR modem. Shop uses DSL. Her house has RoadRunner. No settings set manually for the LAN. Everything is set to automatically connect. What about using OpenDNS, might that maybe help some?

Try restarting the modem. My in-laws (they were on RR at one point I think) had their computer hooked directly to the modem, which always balked if you switched machines while the modem was still on.

Make sure that there's a sturdy firewall then. Being directly connected to the internet means that computer is getting hit regularly with scanning attacks.

This is also true.

Will have to try that tonight.

If your Internet connection is flakey, alwasy turn off everything, and power on things in order, form the wall socket out, waiting for each to boot fully (ex: first modem, then router, then PC). This was the solution to 70% of my tech suppoort calls for the few months I worked ISP support.

Turns out it was a few services causing issues. I did try all of the above, but none of it worked. I turned off IPSEC and a few others and it works wonderfully well. Thanks for the help.
