I thought it worth a mention that the open source media player Songbird finally reached 1.0 a couple of days back (http://blog.songbirdnest.com/2008/12/02/songbird-10-is-here/). It is available for Win XP/Vista, OSX and Linux (x86/x64 and i686)

Songbird (http://getsongbird.com/)

If you are wondering what songbird is, this quote from Aaron Boodman of Greasemonkey they are touting on the songbird page sums it up pretty well:Songbird promises to be the Firefox of media players.I strongly suggest everyone who plays music on their computer to check it out. Or at least poke around the website to see what it offers. In short: lots of features, very customisable.

Though, I'll still stick with Foobar2000 for my music playing, but this definitely has a place on my hard drive.

I'm using it myself and it's pretty good. It has the distinct advantage of being able to sync to my iPod - I can't use iTunes due to company IT restrictions.

I also especially like being able to just click a button and see if any of the artists in my collection are touring in my area.

Nifty program, I'll give it a shot. Thanks for the link.

This new version so far has been performing a way better that the prereleases. I'm still not a huge fan of it though, but I love it better than iTunes.

Does it still use half my processor?

Cool. I've been using it and generally like it, but it can't become my main music program until it can rip and burn cds.

Awesome! I've been half-following the project for, like, 2 years. It's great to see it reach this milestone.

This program is failing me in the worst way. I installed the FairPlay add-on that lets me play my M4Ps but when I select them to play all I get is silence. The program runs through the protected tracks but no sound comes out.

Yes. This is the only reason I don't use Songbird. I really like the look and the features, but until they fix the memory leak and processor hogging, I can't use it. Especially when WinAmp has most of those features, with a little tweaking, and uses no processing power and 30 megs of memory.

I tried this for a bit and generally liked the interface. I will definite keep an eye future versions. Thanks.

I found that after this had happened, the offending track was no longer on my iPod. Don't know if it was corrupted, or deleted. I've got to reload some stuff from my media PC at home now,

It plays protected iTunes music which is good.

Doesn't seem to integrate well with last.fm though, which is annoying.

Update: I just tried Songbird again and now all those songs are working. Yeeeeaaaaay.

EDIT: I did notice just now that the Library occasionally has weird song selection glitches and it's really obnoxious that it will completely stop whatever playlist you're listening to if you remove any song from the Library. The song selection a the top of the screen is really useful, though, and I'm just happy for the lyrics data add-on. The lyrics aren't always perfect, but it's very helpful when I'm listening to Spanish music... though a number of songs I listen to are still too 'obscure' to have their lyrics on the sites the add-on uses.

I really like the lyrics element, but man, eff this program. It's got too many annoying little elements to it. It sometimes glitches the sound of a song if you're multitasking in the program. When you change places in a song there's a clear delay. Ugh. And so forth.

Why do I want a farting bird to manage my music library again?

Haha I was wondering that myself when I saw it.

Mozilla makes some really good stuff, but all of it uses way too much of my system's power to make it as good as it should be. Even Thunderbird, awesome as it is, uses more than Media Monkey when it's playing music. This is while Thunderbird is in the background sitting idly. I still use Thunderbird, simply because it's not nearly as bad as it is with Songbird or Firefox, but damn, that's way too much for a simple e-mail checker.
