We've already covered the big news from Nintendo's Japanese press conference - the new DSi (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=300) - but that's not all the Big N had to show off.

First up is the announcement of a new Punch-Out game for the Wii. The boxing franchise - begun on the NES as 'Mike Tyson's Punch-Out' should be out some time in 2009. Expect it to play like a more robust version of the boxing segment of WiiSport.

Next is Sin & Punishment 2, the sequel to a rail shooter released in Japan only at the end of the N64's life. The original was released on the Virtual Console, and according to Joystiq has something of a cult following even here in the states.

Then we get some Wii hardware news: that starting in the Spring you'll be able to play software directly from - as well as download directly to - an SD card on the Wii. This is in direct response to the complaints about the Wii's internal memory limitations.

The DS will also be the beneficiary of two new titles: Mario & Luigi RPG 3 and a new Wario Ware.

I don't especially care for the Punch Out announcement--I was holding out for a Kid Icarus announcement, myself--but playing games from an SD card and a Wii Sin & Punishment sequel are both full of win. :D

The SD card thing is a very welcome announcement. :)

The only way Punch-Out will work is if they can somehow keep the punching in sync with the player.

I just wonder how they'll figure the force of a punch. However, I see it working if it follows the original NES formula. It's not the force of the punch, but the timing of the high swing, low swing, dodge, and block.

Wii Sports boxing was a turn off for most people I know because all they would end up doing is swinging erratically and then the game became one of luck.

Hells yeah!! Love me some Punch Out!!

I'll also have to buy Sin and Punishment now. Oh darn.

I have been waiting for a dedicated Wii boxing game for quite some time, if the controls are done correctly not only will it be fun as hell but could be a great workout as well. Hopefully it will take advantage of the new enhanced motion sensing device thingy and if we're lucky one Wiimote in each fist for more detailed punch control.

I will buy a Wii solely for this game if done right.

More Sin & Punishment is always nice. I haven't played it in a while, maybe I should pick it up again...

While the SD thing is helpful, we're still dealing with a relatively finite amount of memory.

It's Nintendo, they wanna rape the peripheral market.

It's Nintendo, they wanna rape the peripheral market.

Boxing was easily the worst controlling part of wii sports, if there's any game that would benefit from motion plus, it's Punch-Out.

Sin and Punishment 2? I can't believe they're making that. If someone posted that as a rumor, no one would believe it.

I'll believe it when I see it. Sounds like more flailing to me.

What's that 2D action game at the end - looks kinda like Odin Sphere.

Punch Out: hell yeah! Maybe we can get an old school arcade versioon take on the game (not that I don't love Little Mac) Motion Plus would work well for the remote, but unless there is a two remote option (Samba De) you still have to worry about how the nunchuck will work. Like others this could be another get everybody playing title IF the controls work well.
They could throw the WiiBoard in the mix too, but that would be just plain ridiculous for two players.

I don't think one single game in that video interests me, and if it wasn't for the fact that my girlfriend loves Animal Crossing I don't think I'd hesitate to sell my Wii.

Punch out? On the Wii! Sweet!!! I've been waiting for a new Punch out game for a long time. If Wii Sports boxing is any indication of what this will be like, then we could be in for a something awesome... that is if they tighten up the controls.

What would interest you? I saw a ton of stuff in there that had me curious, plus a number of fantasy titles I wasn't expecting.

Awesome. I'll add it to my rather small list of Wii games I'm interested in.

What exactly made you curious?

Wii Music is nothing for me - when I play games I want to play games, I had fun with the first Animal Crossing but I don't need another one, the schoolgirl dancing game - nah, not for me, I don't play 2D fighters, I don't want another Samba game, Cooking game - no thanks, generic brown action game - nope, I've already got Guitar Hero, Joysound Wii - doesn't interest me at all, the airplane game - nothing for me, looks bland, another schoolgirl dancing game - thanks, but no thanks, the snowboard game - I rather play SSX, Door to phantomile (?) - might be fun, hard to tell, the taiko game - nope, some grey game - impossible to say, that cow game (another Harvest Moon?) - no thanks, generic action RPG (?) - does not look interesting at all, Wii Fit boxing (?) - I want to play games, Wii Sports Resort - looks like as much crap as the first one, waiting tables - I don't think so, Punch-Out - I just don't find flailing my arms to be fun, an adventure game - hm, maybe, shoot targets - eh, no, flying space man - is it a Star Wars game?, a puzzle game - I already got tons that I never play, another generic action game - looks boring as hell, and some other stuff that don't look like any fun.

The biggest game there IMO should be Sin and Punishment 2. Just from the little bit it showed I can tell it's going to be just like the original, just with actual controls this time :D

Punch-Out looked good, and there seemed to be a ton of action-RPG type goodness as well.

I'm not going to get excited about Punchout until it is released and people confirm it's more accurate than WiiSports Boxing.

But I'm all for more Vanillaware stuff!

KLANOA!!!!!! Freakin' sweet.

Also was that a Trace Memory sequel for Wii in the vid?

And Punch-Out seems to follow it's predesessors in requiring timing above all else, so I doubt flailing will work.

They do need to get the second one out here though. I am sure they will, otherwise they wouldn't have bothered putting the section where you get the password from the second game, but still...

Not only does Nintendo publish them, but Professor Layton 3 was in the press reel for the Japanese conference earlier that day.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade confirmed for Wii-exclusive release (http://www.destructoid.com/muramasa-the-demon-blade-confirmed-for-wii-exclusive-release-106495.phtml) (Destructoid)I may feel a little dejected about the recent news of Muramasa's release delay (we won't see it until 2009), but it's sincerely difficult to get too blue when you see art and screenshots like the ones in the gallery. It also helps to get press releases that XSEED and Marvelous Entertainment have brewed in regards to the title, and hey, will you look at it -- it's going to be exclusive to the Wii in North America.

This game looks absolutely beautiful, but so did Odin Sphere, and that really wasn't that good of a game... I'll wait for some reviews before jumping on that one, instead just falling for the visuals like I did when OS was released.
