I have seen this deal floating around Slickdeals and Fatwallet. I do not get why people would pick this deal over applying for a Sony Card, buying it through Sony Style, and getting the PS3 for $250. Is it signing up for the card that no one likes?

Edit: It is not a bad deal in general, just not the best one available at the moment.

I think that's what it is. My mom used to have one of these cards, but the points system was so convoluted and stupid, you pretty much had to spend a million dollars to get something of worth. After about 5 years of having the card, we were only able to get the Ghostbusters movie two pack, and that was something like 20,000 points.

And with how things are, having another credit card isn't the best idea.

You must not watch the news much. Kind of hard to get credit. And smart people are not seeking more high intertest credit.

1. sign up for it
2. get instantly approved
3. buy the PS3
4. get $150 credit for the purchase within a week or so
5. cancel the card at the end of the month

It seems like a pretty harmless way to get an 80GB PS3 for $250.

One problem with that. Applying and cancelling a card within a month destroys your credit score. If you dont care about that, then go ahead. I'd rather keep my credit rating intact, rather than go through all that hassle to save $70. Thats just my opinion.

I guess there could be worse ways to ruin your credit score. ;)

Now, what you can do is this. With the economy being the way it is right now, your total credit line is going to hold alot more weight when applying for a loan (mortgage, small business, etc...). If you have pristine credit, get the Sony card, and purchase the PS3. Pay off the balance upon receiving your statement, and then just let the card sit. Your entire credit line across all of your cards is going to hold alot of weight given the current economic situation.

Credit Cards are not a bad thing Harle. We live in a credit driven economy, as opposed to a cash driven economy nowadays. (As apparent with the current disaster on Wall Street) If you can, get an American Express card. Apply for one of their lower level cards such as the Amex Blue, or Jetblue credit card. If you pay on time, it is the single best way to develop your credit rating. Amex is huge with the big 3.
