View Full Version : Midwest CoGregation?

Revel in my clever title, bitches!

Anyway...

It seems that at EvAv there were quite a few meet ups and I wondered if there would be enough support for a Midwestern gathering sometime in the spring. I know a lot of you are college types so I thought if one were to take place perhaps during Spring Break (that is if you're not off showing your tits on some beach in Florida) would be best.

I know there are a lot of what passes for Midwestern Types around here. Maybe a day or two of drinking and shit. Dunno.

I love this idea. To bad i'm not in the "midwest"...we need an East Coast CoG hookup...

Crittias

Midwest is a bit vague. Any place in particular in mind? I live in Lawrence, just west of Kansas City.

civil
12-03-2008, 06:38 AM
If we did it, I think we'd have to pick a central city. Er, as for what constitutes the Midwest...I'm not sure. Not from these parts originally. Being an elitist West Coaster at heart, I always thought it meant anywhere between L.A. and NYC as the rest was meaningless. :o

EDIT: Crittias, Wikipedia says you're in (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midwest).

Penndenski

that sounds like a sweet idea but we definatly need to define midwest, or at least come up with a general meeting location then just have who ever wants to go, go

Commissar Rob
12-03-2008, 06:45 AM
I would humbly submit that any meeting needs to take place in Wisconsin. I would also suggest Madison as a suitable place for college types. Excellent beer AND cheese curds.

Pure win. :D

Salt Lake City? I'm sure that doesn't count as midwest to anyone east of the rockies - but I think it does count as "Midwest" in the technical sense. Perhaps the new slogan should be "Salt Lake City - the far west of the Midwest"

Superman's Dead
12-03-2008, 08:18 AM
That'd be pretty cool; I can get to most of Western Kansas and all of Missouri. Columbia, MO here. :)

If Denver and Salt Lake City are part of the Midwest, then Minneapolis must be part of New England.... :p

Depending on where and when the meetup is, I may be up for it. When it comes to centralized cities, Des Moines would be very much centered...and boring. ;) Chicago or Madison would actually be good choices. Guess it depends on where everyone lives.

civil

I think we should decide on a city that:

Is relatively central
Has at least one CoGer in it (as a guide of sorts)
We can find cheap/free accommodations for the out of towners. I mean, no one here smells funny, do they?

Yeah, I was going to say Colorado and Wyoming are pushing the term "Midwest". Basically the Midwest consists of states in the Central Time zone (with Ohio and Michigan being the outstanding ones being in the Eastern time zone).

Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana would be the Rocky Mountain area or Mountain area far more than Midwest.

Anyway, your most centralized major cities in the Midwest area would be either Des Moines, IA or Chicago, IL (even though it is east of the center). Not that Des Moines is really all that exciting. I'd say Minneapolis, but obviously I'm from up here so of course I'd say that...heh.

Well, I updated it now with a (public) poll. I went with the major places that everyone seemed to mention as there is at least on CoGer in each of the cities listed in the poll. Once we have the where, we'll work on the when.

EDIT: I actually voted Minneapolis, even though I live in Chicago. It seems the most "central" to everyone.

Plus, they have co-ops.

Yep, that picture pretty much sums it up. Toss in a few million cows and you've just shown the whole state! ;)

If you want the full Nebraska experience (and some nice lesbian subtext), read My Antonia by Willa Cather. She spends pages and pages talking about the prairie grass and the flat terrain. The prairie grass is pretty much all gone, having been replaced by wheat many decades ago, but the overall dull atmosphere hasn't changed. :p

A) Kansas City would offer great barbecue, and a fantastic bar scene (the newly renovated Power & Light district is pretty hopping).
B) This post is academic for me. While I live in Lawrence, KS, during Spring Break I'll be in Costa Rica sitting on a beach and drinking fruity cocktails. So enjoy wherever you folks decide to meet up. I'll toast you from warmer climes.

There are a few good spots downtown. But aside from downtown.. Detroit sucks. Even it's downtown is kinda suck compared to other downtowns.

Sides, if it is Chicago we can go find J3DI, grab Skampy and maybe kidnap Hellbug on the way over if it's done by car... which right now is cheaper than flying out for the first time in a couple years.

Excellent question! I was studying for finals, so I can eventually graduate college, so I can get a decent paying job so I can afford more cheese curds and better/more beer!

If someone is passing on stopping by in Madison, I seriously think it's a good idea. Madison in the late spring/early summer is awesome. Depending on when you show up, most of the students are gone so you don't have the hustle and bustle of a big college town and can actually walk around and get a drink at the good bars.

If not Madison, what about Milwaukee? There's plenty of other things to do there as well.

What is this fuckery?! (Thanks, Bone.) You fuckers had better not be having orgies without me! Or, at least if you are, there had better be some goddamned sexy pictures.

This really deserves some answers.

I'll add them to the list. You prefer blondes or brunettes? Twinks or bears?

Actually, I don't know if I'll be able to make a drive to Chicago. Des Moines or Minneapolis would have been doable. Chicago will take some money tree cultivating.... :(

I thought the same thing when this thread opened, and as soon as the poll was added, I knew the place that would win was going to end up being the spot farthest away from the people who actually attend; I'm still waiting to find out how that goes. :p

This got me thinking. How long are the people that are going to go plan on staying? I figured I'd make a day trip up since it's only like two hours away, but if people are going to be there longer than a day I might stay at a hotel if I have the money. Also if I end up going by my self I'll probably take the train or a bus since there is no way in hell that I'm driving in Chicago traffic, besides my car couldn't make the trip anyway.

I'm all for this if it's somewhere exciting, like Chicago. Des Moines? Hell no!That comment just earned you one (1) Severe Beat Down™. And not the good kind. ;)

That said, I want a Midwest CoG meet-up to occur, and will make the trip to either Minneapolis or Chicago. Preferably Chicago.

Dang, I'd really like you to attend this meetup. I realize that distance is a factor, which is why I'd still prefer that we do this in Minneapolis. ;)

You should definitely make every effort to be there Pom!

I've been to Des Moines enough times (including a three hour layover on a bus trip a couple months ago) to know that Des Moines is French for Dullsville. :p

Oh, no; I'm sure they have intentions of going, and picked a location more suitable to them because of that. I just imagine, when the time comes, the people who skewed the location will be the ones who never make it. You know, not because they set out to be mean, but just because Irony is ever vigilant.

Megabus and Megatrain are both so freakishly cheap. It's normally about £30 return from London to Nottingham. Megatrain has it for a £1. Just make sure you book early.

I'm glad I could help! The Megabus is a great deal.

Keep in mind that the fare is cheaper the further out you buy your tickets, so it's only $1 if you buy pretty far in advance. That said, it's still cheap even if you book a few days in advance. It's always cheaper than Greyhound, as far as I know. My friend and I took the Megabus roundtrip to Chicago last year for around $50 or so each, even though we only booked less than a week in advance. Way cheaper than Greyhound, and much safer and nicer.

Booking early is a must. The prices are still cheap, but it's a huge downer knowing you could have got tickets at a much lower price if only you'd bought a week or two earlier.

Booking early is always best, but even if you end up booking late you still get a good deal with Megabus. The airlines...not so much.

I almost get the feeling we're two different conversations. I just meant that that the hotel clerk might not look too happily upon adults signing into a hotel rooms with a couple of teens; I didn't mean to infer any wrong-doing on your part. You just reminded me of the time that my grandfather and I had to share a hotel room. The lady at the front desk gave us 20 questions before she would hand over the key. It was obvious that she thought my grandpa was a kiddy-fiddler and I was his prey. It didn't help that he wanted a room with one double bed, for him and Grandma, who wasn't with us at the moment. I was going to sleep on the floor. Anyway, she finally gave us a room, but she was very suspicious of us.

Does anybody know which week in March that we are thinking about doing this? I know civil said spring break but the thing is for different colleges spring break falls on different weeks. My college's spring break just so happens to be the second week in March, and I know that the spring breaks for the two universities that are here is the last full week of march.

Well, even if it's in Chicago, that is still potentially doable for me, it's just a matter of when. I saw someone mentioning something about spring break. For my University our break is March 23rd-27th. Plus, if people are planning a hotel stay, it would save some money to share rooms and probably a little more enjoyable if we stayed at the same one. If there's a Marriott or affiliate around I can get discounted rooms too :)

Woohoo! The Megabus is a pretty good ride, all things considered.

I'd prefer that we do this in the first half of March, as my job typically blocks the second half of March through the last week of April from PTO.

Yeah, I'm down with staying at the same hotel as other people. It could be cool depending on how many people plan to stay in a hotel. How many do?

Chicago seems to have one by a large margin, so I'm going to ask that this thread be closed and that people go here to vote (http://www.colonyofgamers.com/cogforums/showthread.php?t=3266) as to when this little get together should take place.
