My office suffered from a burst pipe last week. Luckily almost nothing in my office was damaged, save for a few papers on my desk. Everything is almost back to normal now, but my monitors did get splattered with rusty water, and I've not had much luck getting them clean. They are LCDs with a matte surface.

Any suggestions on cleaning products? I don't want to screw up the surface of the monitors in any way.

Go to a Lens-Crafters, Camera Store, Sunglass Hutt, and find a fine non-abrasive cloth. Put water on it, and wipe.

The problem is that other than dust, any foreign expectorant is a bitch to get off of an LCD monitor, and smudges will be inevitable.

One thing I've been wondering is if there are different cleaning methods for glossy rather than matte screens?

I still just use a non-abrasive cloth to clean my glossy. I have to say all the reflectiveness makes it really easy to see smudges etc. which can make you a bit obsessive in getting every last smudge/dust speck which stalk the screen continuously.

Windex can be fine, just very lightly spray the cloth then wipe off the screen. I have also heard of using rubbing alcohol to get bad smudges off.

I used a half and half mix of rubbing alcohol and deionized water with a microfiber cloth
worked really well.

They make LCD monitor wipes. You can get them at Office Max, Staples, Best Buy, etc.

Always believe what you read on teh webz? Honestly, spraying it VERY lightly on the cloth before you use the cloth on the screen minimizes the windex imo.

Microfiber cloths are great.

Monster makes a screen cleaning product that does not run. It is almost like a gel and comes with a microfiber cloth. I have been using it for years now on both matte and glossy screens.

I wait until my cat has finished grooming himself, then I wipe the screen down with him while the cat spit is still moist.

Then I need to deal with getting the blood out of my shirt.

Hey, ammonia is semi harsh and windex is made for glass not matte lcd surfaces but use what you want. It's not like it costs a ton to buy a bottle of rubbing alcohol and water.

I got from a vendor at work something for cleaning LCD screens called Sanus elements.
The product is a gel-like liquid that comes with a microfiber cloth and a special squeegee for cleaning lcds.
Probably a little too high end for most...but hey, it was free for me and seems to work pretty well.
