I searched and I think we somehow missed this.....

11-20-08 Another Great Show!
Thanks for everyone that made PAX 2008 a huge success! We ended up again shattering all expectations for the event with over 58,000 attendees! The next PAX will be on Labor Day Weekend, 2009 (September 4th, 5th and 6th), so mark off your calendars now! Details for both PAX Prime and the new PAX East in Boston (2010!) coming soon!
September? I hope no one got a hotel already assuming that it was August again like every year before.

Being in September is odd. And I found out that my college transfer was accepted, so naturally, classes are going on. Though, depending on my schedule, I might be able to still go up early. Most of the time I'm able to schedule everything so I don't have Friday classes, and depending on other classes, repeating my going up on Wednesday may work. I'll likely find out by May/June.

I've been trying to find airline fares, but none of the airlines have plans out that far. With it being a week later, that delays flight info that much more.

Damn, 9 months and a day, 17 hours 53 minutes until the show floor opens.

That's actually awesome!!! I love it being over labor day weekend- maybe instead of only going for a day and a half, I'll be able to eek out 2 1/2 :)

Boo! All three days or bust! Though, technically, the first day is just a half day, so if you arrived Friday morning and left Sunday night, that'd be 2.5 days.

I'm going this year, no matter what.

You'll be welcome, but you're paying for everything. All of us PAX vets are depending on you new people to provide everything for us!

I was just about to post this. Yeah, I haven't booked the hotel yet, but probably at the first of the year (I booked in February last year).

Also, an early tip for booking flights. Pick a one-way trip now and a one-way trip back later on. Keeps you from spending a big lump sum in one single moment.

This was during Labor Day weekend this year too, though, right? I mean that's why I wasn't in Atlanta at Dragon Con. Am I just high, or was the 2008 Penny Arcade Expo not held over Labor Day weekend (at the end of August/beginning of September)?

Every PAX has been held on the last weekend in August. It just happened that 2008 was Labor Day weekend. 2009 will break with that and move to Labor Day instead of the last weekend.

But if we do, we're going to stay at a hotel closer to the convention center so we don't have to walk forever just to get there.

You both HAVE to be there. And a closer hotel is a must. The Sheraton, while pricier, was right there. And who would I go to the Mariners game with? Ohhh, just checked the schedule, they'd be playing the Angels at 3:40 pm on Wednesday the 2nd, and go to Oakland on the 3rd through 6th. We'd miss happy hour at that BBQ place, but there'd be a team that we actually care about seeing!

Hoo boy. I'm pretty sure me and the missus are going this year. Labor Day weekend, huh?

Awesome, evil master of cosplay can see all the awesome cosplay. And your missus will have other lady-folk to talk to and hang out with. Alatheia lives in the area, and she knits. Bam, instant friend.
And Voodoo Doughnuts has vegan doughnuts, as we shared fits' one that he missed out on.

Calendar marked :D

What major game keynote are we sneaking into this year? :D

Exactly.

I'll be there, it's already cleared with the wife despite the newborn coming in April.

Why not bring the missus and the kid? You'd be getting the kid into gaming conventions early, and your wife can cosplay as a baby carrier! Win-win.

Since I can't go this year, I'm going to get drunk that weekend. All weekend.

I offered to have you shipped to Seattle, you'd just need some kind of altitude/pressure suit to survive the depressurized cabin. But, that would probably be more expensive. Why not take a boat a few months beforehand? You can get a job on a shipping vessel, and get paid to go to Seattle. ;) Then you can drink all weekend IN Seattle...

Myself and the rest of the Superhappyfuntimeshow crew will do our very best to be in full attendance. I can vouch for myself that yes I am going as I had so much fun last year. I also learnt a lot about the area around the convention centre so it'll be much easier to get around and actually find stuff.

As for booking hotels and flights, wait until January next year. Once you're over your hang overs from the holiday celebrations you need to get your PAX head on for some planning over the following 9 months. Always book the hotel in Jan/Feb so that you get your room and hotel of choice. For me it was the Hyatt that's just around the corner from the convention centre. It was rather plush!

Can't argue about it being too far if Sl1pstream came from Belgium, baz from England, Sandman from Valdosta, GA, and Psykoboy2 and Straximus from Montgomery, AL.

I'd like to keep my current job and while working on a shipping vessel is an awesome way to spend my vacation time, I'd much rather relax during that time. I'd like to keep a job too as it's kind of hard to save up money without one. :p

You know, with it being so far out... what, like nine months away... I don't really buy this for too many folks. I'm going to try and fly in from Greenland for next year's show.

It's just that fun, you know? You really can't sell someone on it, though, if they haven't been before. So I can also see why there are those folks who aren't looking into tickets/hotel rooms already.

-The show floor itself is filled with games that are coming out (especially the Fall line up).
-Tons of speakers and panels to see if you are into that.
-Free swag!!
-Free concerts.
*Many coggers who I had gotten to know fairly well online were there, so it was amazing to see there people in person.*
*A whole fucking convention hall full of gamers. It was amazing to see so many like minded people in one area and it was great to be a part of it.*

And I'll be taking you up on that offer of a ride from the airport this year for sure. I missed out last year

ccst??????

Cross Country Super Trip. Organized by Moe Fwacky on the PAX forums. Driving cross country with 60+ cars in 3 days. The core contingent starts in South Bend, IN, but there are branches that start in Florida, Maine and Virginia. As it gets closer, Moe works on the mapping (all on his own free time) based on who is providing rides, and who needs rides.
There is also the WCTT, West Coast Train Trip that runs from San Diego, CA to Seattle, for any westcoasters. They take over one of the lounges (with permission of Amtrak, or course).

PAX was my first gaming convention. For me, it was all about meeting people from the forums, seeing all the upcoming games (and playing some of them!), getting tons of free swag, and hanging out with cool people that all have the same interests. 3 days of awesome convention.

Dave should be able to help you there. Mother fucker never even really visited EvAv or knew a damn soul there, but he went anyway. He can tell you from experience being in the exact position you are what it's like.

Ha ha!! Well...

Honestly, I had heard about the 2008 Penny Arcade Expo from my friends that do the In-Game Chat radio show and a few of them had planned on going... so I did know a few people, but I wouldn't say that my gameplan was anything close to what you might call "organized", you know?

Basically I just coordinated with Scott and Daniel and it kind of went from there, at least as far as room arrangements went. So I wouldn't recommend doing what I did (in waiting around until the last minute), even though it all worked out. Ha ha!

The show itself is just like any other kind of "convention" thing, I guess. I don't know how to tell someone who hasn't been to something comparable really. I mean I'd kind of compare it to going to a comic show, only instead of comics the vendors are there pimping their video games. That makes sense, right?

Also, my basic reason for going to this past year's show was mainly because I'd never been to Washington and, at least for me, that was reason enough to go there. I mean we only get so much time here in this life, so my attitude was just kind of like, "I haven't been there. Fuck it, let's go!" And in doing that, I found myself out in Washington.

Everything from there on out just kind of happened. Again, I knew three guys from the radio show, but then everyone else I just met for the first time that weekend... and that was without ever being on the EA site. The thing that really struck me though, and if you really want to hear about this kind of as it was happening that weekend you really should listen to the 29-person EAR broadcast from Scott's hotel room, was just how nice and genuine everyone was. I kind of go on this 4-5 minute little speech in the broadcast, which was funny at the time (and still is to me), but it's honestly how I felt and still feel. You know, the people that I met that weekend (from ALL OVER) were just straight up awesome people... and nearly every one of them had a fucking DS too. Ha ha!!

I would later go out and pick up a DS that same weekend, but not because everyone that weekend had one. It was due more to the awesome sense of nostalgia that I got from playing the dick-kickingest game of all time... Super Dodgeball Brawlers (which is basically an old throwback/remake of Super Dodge Ball for the NES) on the Nintendo DS.

So... I don't think that answered their question at all, Scott... but I had a really good time and had never been before, but Anjanette and Eric have the whole thing squared away. So you will never be out on your own or completely lost, I mean... you know, unless you want to be (which I think some people did, and that's totally cool). What was also kind of funny was the sheer number of all the people from the EA site that were there. I mean, I think that there were something like fifty-plus people there, so you could easily find someone from EA and coordinate with them and find anyone else that you might be looking for.

I'd totally recommend the experience, but that's just me. My reason for wanting to go to next year's show is based more on all of the people that I met at this year's show. Maybe that's bad, and you know... it's not all about the games; but honestly before I went to PAX I hadn't been playing much of anything (save for Bioshock and Halo 3). I had been working on a Master's Degree for two years and had graduated about a month before PAX... so I was just looking for something fun to do and, again, go somewhere I'd never been to before.

Even if you're going solely for the video games, and not the community involvement (I guess that's kind of what you'd call it, right?), I still think you'd have fun.

Dave
12-06-2008, 05:31 AM
There are also panels with people who are involved in the video game industry, musical concerts, and (as Rogue_hunter also pointed out) plenty of schwag.

Just make sure that if you go to a fucking SONY booth and play their Resistance game on the PSP that you know that the Resistance games are made by SONY... and don't ask if "these games are going to be on any other systems", you know because some people might just have Xbox 360s and Nintendo DSs. That's all I'm sayin'.

How was I supposed to know that it was a SONY booth? Ha ha!! I'd been workin' on an MBA for the past twenty-four months. The guy got his panties in a bunch and it was ultimately funny... but your's truly did get a free Resistance baseball cap out of it! So the story did have a happy ending.

Lots and lots of schwag, though. Anthony can tell you more about that, however. ;)

...or good 'ol dDave (because someone had butterfingers when he opened an account on EA with Ross's iPhone) or Just Dave, since I was trying to tell folks that it was "just Dave" (and really meaning "Dave"--apparently that didn't come across like I had originally intended, ha ha!). I'm as much of a gamer as anyone else, bro. I'm just not as clever as some when it comes to coming up with a handle. Ha!

It is totally about the experience, and (again) that's why I'm planning on using leave, from my year-long remote in Greenland, to come back stateside and do it again.

THAT, and you totally have enough time to start saving now. I mean, I don't know your financial circumstances right now in this crappy economy; but there is some time before next year's event, you know? You, like me, might just have to be a little frugal in what you spend in these next few months. For my money, though, it's totally worth it. Not to mention you get to walk around the beauty that is Seattle, Washington.

Then again, that East Coast PAX is also tempting to wait for.

Don't wait! Waiting on things sees you miss out. Seriously. Go to both. Save for PAX '09 now, and next year... after PAX... save for PAX 2010.

With enough planning, saving and sacrifice you can do most anything in this life that you want (within reason).

Damn, sounds like you guys had a lot of fun there this year. I'd love to go but I wouldn't have any clue what to do when I got there, I've never even been west of Texas so ending up in Seattle on a trip by myself would be crazy. Plus you guys would make fun of my southern accent :p

As someone who took a 15-17 hour flight to Seattle from Brussels, with an accent, I doubt that you'll have anything to worry about.

So what was your experience of it like, travelling from abroad? Did it live up to what you'd hoped?

Yes. It absolutely did. I wouldn't have done it a second time if it didn't.

I have indeed. Saw it about a month ago and I'm still trying to decide which version of the movie poster I want to buy. :p

So, I'm watching The Amazing Race and they are in Portland. One of their clues is "Head to the place where the magic is in the hole."

They had to go to a gloryhole?

Do me a favor and tell anyone who will listen to you about that little movie. I saw it about a month ago too and that is just a great little movie that I think more people need to see.

Already doing my best. We have to have as many people watch it as possible before the impending Hollywood remake comes out.

Magic Gardens would be one of our less classy strip clubs.

How magical is it?

It sucks that they didn't make them go into Voodoo Doughnut. The one season that ended in Chicago actually made them do stuff at each place. They had to eat a whole Chicago deep dish pizza and then run to the final stop. It would have been awesome to see them eat a tex-ass in under 2 minutes.

Not that magical, third-run strippers and the bartender is this angry 80-year-old woman. I think the clue was probably pointing to Voodoo Donuts, I was just making a joke.

Stoke beat me to it, but yeah... it's called Let The Right One In.

Keep an eye out for this one, Scott. It's really one of the better films that I've seen in theatres this year.

I've started looking at plane tickets already.

I can't wait. The last couple of nights I was talking about PAX 08 with Track and PAX 09 can't come fast enough.
