The regular beta invites start going out today apparently, it was on Kotaku and what not. Then they linked that.
I caved, and figured I'd check it out. I lack an MMO since my ex-roomie canceled his WAR account, and I did rather like the original Persona.
I'm downloading now, haven't gotten to the install yet, so I'm not really sure where the key they give you is supposed to be entered, as it's not on the website anywhere, so I'm guessing it's in the installer or something.

Note: Translation and adaptation to non-Japanese font sizes hasn't been fully completed yet. Be warned.

Ahh fun. It'll be just like the old days when I used to download every last damn free MMO on the planet. ;)

Installed!
I had actually made two accounts, one from the website, and one from the link in the Filefront installer. I never wound up having to log into the second account as the first one just worked right off the bat. I never had to enter a key at all, apparently just signing up for the beta on the website was enough. I did finally find the spot on the website to enter my key, but oddly, this was after I'd already been logged in and playing for about an hour.
Kinda nifty. Definitely shows some of the lack of polish one expects from these F2P Asian games, but overall doesn't look much worse than the average PS2 game unless you zoom in really close. There are definitely some missing or messed up translation bits, but not as bad as I was expecting for the most part. The movement controls also don't respond quite right.
For the good parts though, combat took me a bit to understand what was going on because it wasn't the usual auto-attack plus skills thing, but it turned out to actually have kind of an action-reaction sort of thing going on that could be kinda cool, if repetitive. The character system is crazy flexible build-your-own-class stuff, combined with Ultima Online style "level by use" skills, which I like. There's also a faint touch of PNP in here with the BD&D-ish alignment system and some of the terms used.
Also, handy tip: The included options program only contains 4:3 resolutions, but the settings are stored in a text file called OutsideOptions that's freely editable. Just open it up and change the numbers to the resolution you want.
I'll probably keep poking at it for a while at least, longer than most of these freebie Asian games.

Thanks for the heads up, J. My download will be done in 10 minutes. I absolutely adore the Shin Megami universe, and was really looking forward to trying this out.

Kat and I just put a few hours into this and it's actually quite a bit of fun. It has a cool blend of JRPG and MMO that makes it feel a bit more unique than it might have otherwise. Capturing the demons is fun and also very frustrating. Especially when someone else comes up and starts killing the Pixie you are trying to befriend 8-(.

Downloading now, I'll give it a try, as I have about ten hours to kill before my monitor is supposed to show up.

The new patch broke my game. :(
It'll be next week probably before I can try and play again, hopefully they fix the issue by then.
EDIT: Running a full check seemed to fix it.

Blah, now there are rampant disconnect problems (at least for Kat and myself). I am finding this game to be highly enjoyable, but I decided to quit for the night due to getting disconnected every five minutes. I wonder if it's because I was playing really late last night, so there wasn't many people on that I didn't have any problems yesterday.

No, I have DC problems too after this patch. I've been trying to run the first instanced dungeon and I've been disconnected 5 times. I'm giving it one more try, and then that's it for the evening.
Edit. Server's down now, they're trying to fix the issues.

Megami Tensei, big long running Japanese RPG series. Usually known over here mainly under the Revelations: Persona name.
Has anyone figured out how the hell you revive a dead pet? I didn't see any items in the shop that did it. MY shiny new Cerberus is currently deceased on account of the mobs on the bridge to that first dungeon ripped the poor thing a new one.

Arcane - there's an item called a revival bead (that looks like a red donut-thing) that you can use. Double click on it, click on deceased pet, viola.
Also, you can unsummon dead pets.

I'll look for that next time I'm on. I knew I could unsummon him, I did it because I figured it wouldn't be good to just leave him there.
I wish you could rename your pets, but I haven't seen anyway to do that yet.

It hasn't really been known under the Revelations moniker since the Playstation days, and that was just for the first Persona game (and a gameboy game). Since they've been putting out the games on the Playstation 2, Atlus has been very intentional about labeling the different MegaTen games as Shin Megami Tensei: whatever... Some argue that they shouldn't do this since they don't explicitly label all the games as MegaTen games in Japan (such as the Persona games), but that's mainly because the series is well known enough over there that it's pretty understood.
As for playing Imagine, I downloaded and played through the prologue dungeon the night they gave out the beta keys, but haven't gotten a chance to really play again. I'll need to do some more of that this weekend.

You should have about 20 Revival Beads that the Snake Man gave you from one of the starting quests.

I *really* wish the fucking game would stop disconnecting me in dungeons. I'd like to actually FINISH one for once.

I just got a beta key from Atlus, and I have to say they capture the look and feel of the PS2 games very well. I'm not quite sold on the combat yet, though.

If anyone wants a key Atlus sent me one I can't use (no PC). Free to good home.
