Karusan, or back in the day DrMike. Considering I was going through the whole first post thing I thought I would at least do a proper intro. So why am I here. Many a month ago now my mate introduced me to EvAv to sustain my gaming knowledge needs, then of my own accord started listening to EvAv Radio which I enjoyed immensely. After hearing about the changes that were going to be happening I happenchanced onto CoG and the thought it might be an opportunity for me to enter and become a part of what I have already seen is such a strong and vibrant community that’s establishing themselves as a new identity, whatever happens from here will be but I thought I’d give it a shot.
So about me, I come from this little island down south, if some of you have heard of it before, called Australia, nice place to visit if you ever get a chance. Considering the worldwide gaming community as a hole, we’re probably part of the minority and forgotten few so the more Aussies that can make themselves heard the better, I would say though that the acknowledgement of Australia as a gaming nation has slowly improved from what it was, all we need now is to get rid of the Governor General of South Australia and remove the restrictions to R18+ games for things to really progress. The only thing that really irks me though is that we get lumped in with Europe with all our releases, I mean come on, they’re on the other side of the world and we kick their butt at cricket, we’re not Europeans.
I’m probably part of the generation that just caught the end of the Atari and the Commodore 64, moving into the NES and SNES days, saying goodbye before entering the PSOne (specifically for FFVII) and PS2 arena, of which I became part of the online gaming community through Hardware and SOCOM and from there haven’t really looked back. My original handle on the PS2 network was DrMike, not that I’m thinking anyone would recognise me from those days but I’ll throw it out there anyway. Our community was great but eventually started to drift apart after years of playing, Xbox Live was introduced and some went onto that, it was fun but didn’t hold my heart as much as my PS2 did. Eventually I turned to my PC and FFXI in 2004 of which I’m still actually playing. For those that make the comments about the graphics being crap, it was made for PS2 and is 7 years old, kind of explains itself, I still have fun and I’ve made a lot of good friends, that’s what matters to me. I tried out WoW but it didn’t hold me, too much grinding and “I want it now” mentality, not a dig at WoW players, was just my impression and I didn’t have fun so I stopped (and I’m not saying FFXI doesn’t have problems either). Picked up a PS3 early last year, one of the few that supports PS2 games in Australia since they removed it from our versions, not that it matters since I still have my PS and PS2 still, and have since purchased Resistance, Motorstorm, Call of Duty 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Metal Gear Solid 4 and am anxiously looking forward to the next few months where LittleBigPlanet and SOCOM Confrontation come out. Also have my PSP which I specifically bought for FFVII:CC and finally got into Steam last month after much prodding so I could play Portal, mmm cake.
So there’s a bit of the gaming side of me, I also always read Naruto and Bleach manga and watch the anime, always on the lookout for other good anime if anyone else suggests any. All I wanna say is I look forward to trying to involve myself and learn a lot of what there is to offer out there and now that I’ve popped my virgin posting cherry there’s no turning back! :D
