A friend of mine has a kid and she asked me (since I'm one of her "techy friends") about hidden cameras.

What she wants is a hidden camera that she can hide either in a picture frame or a wall clock/table clock or similar. She also wants it in color and motion activated. I think she also prefer USB memory sticks to record the videos on so she can plug it into her computer and watch what happens if any.

Problem is, I have not much luck finding one that doesn't break her bank. Obliviously she doesn't want one that is way over 500 dollars ($100 to $300, I would hazard a guess).

Any ideas of a brand of spy cams/hidden cams out there?

She wants to spy on her children? Yikes, glad I wasn't raised in a house like that.

If you must know, it's called "watching the baby sitters", you perverted little man. :p

IIRC, it's illegal to video tape someone without them knowing.

Just saying, it's a path she probably doesn't want to go down. A much better solution would be to get someone you trust.

I'm pretty sure that doing the nanny-cam thing for babysitters is acceptable. At least as far as I know.

I've heard a lot of stories about people doing such a thing.

Is there a reason why they might suspect something, or are they just overly protective/paranoid?

I would imagine that it depends on where you live.

The key here is 'without prior knowledge or consent.' It's perfectly legal if the sitter knows about it and agrees to it. It's also a good idea to get something in writing, signed by both partied, before proceeding.

It's legal many places without someone knowing. And always not legal many places. You should check state laws.

To reply to the off topic questions (:p), shes had friends that had bad experiences with baby sitters so being a parent, naturally shes concerned. However, that does not make her "overly protective" or "paranoid" or a control freak, so why do people always jumps the gun when it comes to that, I could never understand. And I see nanny cam/hidden cam all over the news about catching unwanted behaviors in people with not a single "OMG, that's against the law to video camera them without them knowing it!" plastered on any forms of news on the internet (store dressing room not included).

Back on topic, any brands or products I can give to her for her to use or explore as an option?

She really needs to check with the local police or call the DA's office on this. If it is a state with stricter entrapment or privacy laws, I think she may be mad if her safe kids are safe without a home, and college money, after the law suit happens.

There are multiple outlets for Wireless video surveylance, Logitec even makes some. The more popular and more reasonable solutions do not record, so much as offer you a secure and protected web cam that you can check remotely.

When you get into recording or motion activation, you are talking highly priced micro-electronics. I do not think the typical home has 500 dollars per camera.

I snagged a Microsoft VX-3000 recently(7 bucks from Go Gamer), one could place this in a larger object, or put it in a book shelf, to accomplish such goals.

This seems to be more like keeping watch on a room that's off limits.

That USB pen looks sweet, but it seems to lack the 'record only when there's movement' feature.

Shill or no shill, that thing is kind of cool... Assuming that it works.
